Save Me the Waltz
Save Me the Waltz: A Novel | Zelda Fitzgerald
Save Me the Waltz is the first and only novel by the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald. During the years when Fitzgerald was working on Tender Is the Night, Zelda Fitzgerald was preparing her own story, which parallels the narrative of her husband, throwing a fascinating light on F. Scott Fitzgeralds life and work. In its own right, it is a vivid and moving story: the confessions of a famous, slightly doomed glamour girl of the affluent 1920s, which captures the spirit of an era.

Dear Zelda, I wish I loved that book, I tried very hard but I sometimes found myself lost in the plot and wondered if I missed a page. I won't pan this book because there is goodness in it but this is not great work. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I‘m considering reading this as a counterpoint or whatever to Tender Is the Night. Any opinions out there on whether it‘d be worth my time?

DivineDiana It‘s on my TBR. I do love Zelda, so I would read it just to feel how she thinks. 🤔 6y
twohectobooks @DivineDiana Yeah, I‘m very curious about this but also there are a lot of reviews saying it needed more editing. Maybe I should just try a few chapters.... 6y

So glad I read this one - I do see what people meant when they called it overwritten, but I really enjoyed it and thought the writing style was dense but wonderful, luscious and rich. So fascinating to read after a biography of Zelda, a really fascinating complex woman. I wish more attention would get paid to this one!

New England summer is an Episcopal service. The land basks curiously in a green and homespun stretch; summer hurls its thesis and bursts against our dignity explosively as the back of a Japanese kimono.

I love all the descriptions in this book! It‘s so lush and rich.

First book I have to read for my new irl book club later this month! Loving it so far. The prose is much denser and darker, but also funnier, than F Scott Fitzgerald which I‘m really enjoying.

Just hit the six hour mark for #24in48. Although I‘m a bit behind some of the other progress posts, I‘m planning on getting a big chunk of reading in before midnight. The BF and I decided we‘d like to get at least 12 hours in on Saturday, since we‘d be running around throughout the day. Just finished, SAVE ME THE WALTZ, and enjoyed it. Zelda is a fascinating woman and author. #readathon #savemethewaltz #zeldafitzgerald @24in48

I‘m on the last chapter in SAVE ME THE WALTZ. I‘ve enjoyed this book, especially the extra research it‘s led me to do. I also can‘t wait to discuss this with my book group this upcoming Wednesday.

We decided to mix things up today for the #24in48 readathon. So, the BF and I are currently sitting at a café, sipping on dirty chai‘s and listening to live music as we read. Bliss. #readathon #bookandcoffee #savemethewaltz #zeldafitzgerald @24in48

Disappointing—this was clearly only published because it was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s wife and mostly autobiographical. So much of the description was incomprehensible. While the dialogue was believable and there was some honesty in her characterization, the novel felt disjointed in clumpy sections throughout. I felt that there was a lot of truth left out, but it still adds to our understanding of Fitzgerald and Zelda‘s relationship.

batsy What a lovely cover, though! 6y
HotCocoaReads @batsy Oh yes—I wish I liked the book as much as I like the book cover! 😬 6y
emilyhaldi That's too bad, I would love to read something from Zelda's perspective! 6y

I was browsing Pinterest (my other almost unhealthy obsession) and came across a pair of Jane Austen sneakers, naturally I had to go to the website, y'all they have some fantastic bookish shoes. Austen, Hemingway, T.S. Eliot, Kafka. They have To Kill a Mockingbird. They also have Frida Kahlo, and Johnny Cash and Bowie. 😻😍 because I'm an enabler https://www.windowshopcafe.com/collections/shoes/products/womens-zelda-fitzgeral...

PrincessLibrarian How'd you like this? I have it on my list, but I really wonder whether or not I will actually enjoy it! 7y
Jess_Read_This @PrincessLibrarian I am undecided how I liked it.. I so desperately wanted to like it. Her style is unique, I think she kept a thesaurus by her side as she wrote. The story felt choppy, brisk, and almost on the precipice of being deeper but something was blocking that leap. Does that make sense? My mind kept questioning how much was fiction vs. autobiographical so that could have affected my reading. I can say I liked it but wanted a little more. 7y

This is Zelda's response to her husbands novel Tender is the Night. #setinthe1920s #marchintoreading #z

saresmoore I want that! 7y
belacat I started this. I got frustrated with Zelda's overuse of her thesaurus. I am so glad it wasn't panned by the reviewers. I will give it another chance after I get some sci-fi palette cleansing done. I almost feel I owe it to her to finish it. Given her peer group, she had a lot to live up to. No wonder she was trying so hard! 7y
Loreen @belacat the writing is very of its time, for sure. She really wanted to be a modernist in the James Joyce style. And that makes reading her difficult! A palate cleanse is always helpful. 😬 7y
Jess_Read_This I agree with the thoughts on the thesaurus, @belacat. Have you read Z? I'm kind of surprised how so much mirrors that story. Some of the imagery she is invoking, for example, Alabama crawling into the "cave"'of David's ear and then describing viewing the brain anatomy baffle me. I am enjoying the read but it's not an easy one. (edited) 7y

Finally finished this one today. There's not much of a plot but it doesn't really matter--the real standout is how Zelda Fitzgerald describes things.
