It's All about the Books: How to Create Bookrooms and Classroom Libraries That Inspire Readers
It's All about the Books: How to Create Bookrooms and Classroom Libraries That Inspire Readers | Tammy Mulligan, Clare Landrigan
9 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
The term "lifelong reader" is more than a slogan or jargon in a mission statement. Lifelong readers need passion, agency, and a sense of inquiry in their reading lives. They also need books. In It's All About the Books, Tammy Mulligan and Clare Landrigan share the systems they have developed over the last 15 years to create classroom libraries and book rooms that support both student choice and instructional goals. Getting started with designing and provisioning classroom libraries and bookrooms to support lifelong readers involves collaboration, planning, and some elbow grease! It's All About the Books is a practical yet detailed guide to creating a system where classroom libraries and bookrooms work seamlessly together to make it easy for teachers to find books to engage and scaffold all students in a school community. Each chapter includes photos, resources, book lists, and a step-by-step outline of the process so you can get started right away. From design, to inventory, to organizing, purchasing, and using these books in the classroom-they demonstrate how to make the most of what you have, and how to get what need on a budget. Every child deserves the opportunity to become a lifelong reader. It's All About the Books will help you transform how you organize books across the entire school to make each teacher's book supply seem endless in the eyes of a reader. Teachers must have easy access to what they need, when they need it, because in the life of a reader the right book at the right time makes all the difference. - Tammy and Clare want this book to impact the lives of teachers and students directly so they are donating all author royalties it generates to the Book Love Foundation. Book Love is a not-for-profit organization founded by Penny Kittle with one goal: to put books in the hands of teenagers. Our book will now expand that goal and put books into the hands of elementary and middle grade students as well. Thank you, Penny, for allowing us to bring the heart of this book to life through your hard work and vision. -Tammy and Clare

Y‘all, I want all the books! I tried to do the #PennyPerPage challenge, but with the stack of kindle books I just picked up, oh have I ever failed already, and we‘re not even out of January! Pennies for trying, but my husband was right about me. He can stop laughing now. Really! 😂

janeycanuck But think of the service you are doing for others who fall off the wagon now and can say to their husbands “I‘m not the only one who didn‘t make it!” 3y
dariazeoli I got a bday gift card this week and bought 9 ebooks with it! I‘m hoping that stops the cravings for the rest of the month - how many pennies in the hole are you? 😆 (edited) 3y
erinachu How does #pennyperpage work? 3y

slategreyskies @janeycanuck that‘s a good way to look at it!! 😂 3y
slategreyskies @dariazeoli I had $14.92 to spend, and I spent just under $34, so about $20 in the hole! 😂 3y
slategreyskies @erinachu You get one penny to spend for every page you read. The goal is not to spend more on books than you‘ve earned from reading. I‘d read 1492 pages so far this year, so I shouldn‘t have spend more than $14.92, but I spent almost $34!! Let‘s just say it was a really good sale on kindle books today! 😂 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I wanted to buy less this year but I have ordered a few already. I used some gift cards and a little of my own cash, but they were books for planned buddy read that aren't available (or have a really long wait) through my library resources. 3y

What do you do when you‘re running a family reading challenge for the year, and the quarantine kids are glued to their screens?
You read the rest of the number they pledged to make up the difference 🤷🏻‍♀️
Unless... 🤔
Unless when they call you to play a game online you show them all the books you have to read cos they‘re not, and tell them if they read books you can take some off your stack, and thus have more time to play 😏
1 down...90 to go!

I thought you all would appreciate the book display I made for my classroom. I'm going to switch out the book covers periodically so I can feature different books throughout the school year. 📚 #ya #librarylove #booklove #englishteacher #teachersoflitsy

Enjoyed this book! But it‘s really geared towards elementary school. I‘m looking for ideas from middle school and high school teachers!! How do you organize your classroom library! #whatdoesyourclassroomlibrarylooklike #teacherlife #classroomlibrary #weneeddiversebooks

So. With the final stage of the move finally upon us (it‘s only been 1 1/2 year separation for my husband and I), my son and I will drive from Louisiana to Virginia next week. My plan is to hit Lemuria in Jackson, MS, along the way. Because bookstores make good stops on road trips. Any other suggestions?

Just for @CarolynM (I did NOT leave with just one book this time...😂😂😂).

Cinfhen Where have you been!!!?! 6y
CarolynM Thank you. Hopefully I'll get visit it next week. 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen on the MOST HORRIBLE trip home we‘ve ever had... (so bad I‘m extremely extremely glad to be back in Mumbai even though it‘s “feels like 45.5 and I hate the heat). How are you? 6y

GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM wave at the Loebs for me!! 😊😊😊😊 6y
Cinfhen Wow!! Never thought I‘d hear you say “extremely extremely glad to be back in Mumbai” 😂😂flying can be soooo bloody awful!!! Hope you enjoyed time with the family!! I was worried about you 🧡it‘s been HOT here too but not 45!!! That‘s killer heat!!!! 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen I know, right?!? 😱😂🤦🏻‍♀️! Yes and no: PILs beloved dog had to be put down (didn‘t recover from sedation for tests that revealed spinal tumors), brother‘s beloved rescue Galah passed away while we were staying, heart troubles in 94yr old, chest and digestive system infection in Mr GaD (who is a MORON and swam in the upper Ganges at a work offsite just before we left) and issues with the place we boarded the kitties amongst others!😱💔 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen oh, and Singapore Airlines oversold our first flight & only stuffed us into the very back of economy in crew seats when I threw a fit & loudly threatened legal action in the airport (it was the first leg of close to 34hrs in transit 😡) & we missed catching virtually everyone we know to be with the heartbroken or sick family members while WhatApp yelling at the kennels for doing stupid cat-life risking things. Never again, please! 6y

Most of these books will go into my high school classroom library. #bookhaul I've been having a virtual yardssle in Facebook marketplace and have decided that the money I make will go towards funding my classroom library. I can't wait to get it set up in the fall. I have so many new books to add. Do you see anything here that you loved?

FeastOfFiction That‘s a fantastic start!! 6y
