Summer Island
Summer Island | Kristin Hannah
The author of the cherished bestseller On Mystic Lake returns with a poignant, funny, luminous novel about a mother and daughter--the complex ties that bind them, the past that separates them, and the healing that comes with forgiveness. Years ago, Nora Bridge walked out on her marriage and left her daughters behind. She has since become a famous radio talk-show host and newspaper columnist beloved for her moral advice. Her youngest daughter, Ruby, is a struggling comedienne who uses her famous mother as fuel for her bitter, cynical humor. When the tabloids unearth a scandalous secret from Nora's past, their estrangement suddenly becomes dramatic: Nora is injured in an accident and a glossy magazine offers Ruby a fortune to write a tell-all about her mother. Under false pretenses, Ruby returns home to take care of the woman she hasn't spoken to for almost a decade. Nora insists they retreat to Summer Island in the San Juans, to the lovely old house on the water where Ruby grew up, a place filled with childhood memories of love and joy and belonging. There Ruby is also reunited with her first love and his brother. Once, the three of them had been best friends, inseparable. Until the summer that Nora had left and everyone's hearts had been broken. . . . What began as an expose evolves, as Ruby writes, into an exploration of her family's past. Nora is not the woman Ruby has hated all these years. Witty, wise, and vulnerable, she is desperate to reconcile with her daughter. As the magazine deadline draws near and Ruby finishes what has begun to seem to her an act of brutal betrayal, she is forced to grow up and at last to look at her mother--and herself--through the eyes of a woman. And she must, finally, allow herself to love. Summer Island is a beautiful novel, funny, tender, sad, and ultimately triumphant.

Beautifully written story about the strained relationship between a mother and daughter. I love Kristin Hannah and I enjoyed this story a lot. It was a bit sappy in parts, but it reminded me a little of Firefly Lane with some of the content which I liked. Loved the characters and the story.

Friday arvo op shop spoils on my way home from work whilst waiting for the bus who nearly went straight past my stop! Now I‘m on the train. Yes our Sydney to Newcastle trains are this ancient and purple. Ha! Grand total $13.

charl08 Love the purple colour, no matter how ancient. A fan of too. 1y

Kristin Hannah books always make me cry. But in a good way. She brings real emotions to life. This story of a mother & daughter, estranged for years until now. Lost loves, lost lives, complexities of life and marriage.

A good read from a Kristin Hannah, but quite an emotive journey so make sure you bring tissues with you. A good book but still not my favourite Kristin Hannah book.

The last book of our #ChristmasBuddyReadathon

Thanks to those that played along.

EadieB @Andrew65 I agree not her best but still a good one! 2y

Enjoyable, heartbreaking, and emotional. Great story and characters. I liked how the characters were growing, and they learned to forgive and move on. People hold on to their bad memories and emotions too tight, believing they know the only truth, only to learn, way later on, there might be more to the story…

EadieB So true! Another great review! 2y

This is a book about Nora Bridges and her two daughters, Caroline and Ruby, and their mother/daughter relationships. It tells about the situations in the past that separated them and the healing and forgiveness that allowed them to move forward. It is a heartbreaking story so if you read it, don‘t forget the tissues. A Kristin Hannah winner!

Andrew65 Tissues at the ready, hoping to start this tomorrow. 2y

This is a book about holding onto anger & how doing so can get in the way of happiness. While I have loved some of K.H. books, this 📖 doesn‘t rank high for me. My main qualms were the stereotypes used to bolster the story, the predictability, and the fluff in the writing. However, I did I appreciate the authenticity incorporated into her characters & the complexities of emotions that often impede familial relationships. 🛑: homophobia, cancer

I loved this book I loved Eric so many true to life things going on in a way but I'm not sure about the end of the story.....it all kinda wrapped up in a nice little bow of sorts and not all of us can go home and back to our first loves even if we at some point wished we could

Enjoyable but not as good as I hoped from previous reads from K H. Interesting to learn about the San Juan islands off Seattle though.

MelissaSue81 I‘ve not read this one, but K.H.‘s earlier books can be a bit fluffy for my tastes. The name and the cover make me think this might be one of those. 5y

Wow such a great ending to this book. It seemed a predictable, nice story about a daughter and mother‘s relationship, but the ending definitely got me 😭 I‘m reading while driving with my hubby, trying to hold in my tears so he doesn‘t wonder wtf is wrong with me 😂

She Remembered how it had felt and tasted, that slowly descending depression, like a thick glass jar that closed around you, sucking away the air you needed to breathe, creating a barrier between you and the world.
