Myth of Perpetual Summer
Myth of Perpetual Summer | Susan Crandall
26 posts | 19 read | 31 to read
From the national bestselling author of Whistling Past the Graveyard comes a moving coming-of-age tale set in the tumultuous sixties that harkens to both Ordinary Grace and The Secret Life of Bees. Tallulah James's parents' volatile relationship, erratic behavior, and hands-off approach to child rearing set tongues to wagging in their staid Mississippi town, complicating her already uncertain life. She takes the responsibility of shielding her family's reputation and raising her younger twin siblings onto her youthful shoulders. If not for the emotional constants of her older brother, Griff, and her old guard Southern grandmother, she would be lost. When betrayal and death arrive hand in hand, she takes to the road, headed to what turns out to be the not-so-promised land of Southern California. The dysfunction of her childhood still echoes throughout her scattered family, sending her brother on a disastrous path and drawing her home again. There she uncovers the secrets and lies that set her family on the road to destruction.

Out of my usual routine so had to give up most reading goals for the month. But, one I've kept up is trying to do something productive while listening to audiobooks. So, I stripped the old wallpaper in a bathroom and painted a bedroom. Plan to paint the bathroom tomorrow and start a new audio book. Enjoyed the posted book which seemed perfect for #SummerEndReadathon as the zinnias in the garden fade. @TheSpineView

A book set in the South, centered around a dysfunctional family, with plenty of damaged (but redeemable and ultimately good) characters? Totally my jam. This was a good one - thanks again, @robinb ♥️♥️

robinb Yay...glad you enjoyed it!! 🎉 It was a favorite for me when it came out. 💕 4y

Another book to satisfy a prompt on my #SummerFun Bingo card.

I was in the mood for another novel set in the South. This one deals in a dark secret hidden within the family that drives everyone in opposite directions as they try to escape the family's past.

I'm a fan of dysfunctional family dramas, and this one didn't disappoint.

I adored The Myth of Perpetual Summer, I felt so many emotions and it tugged at my heartstrings. An all around powerful story that‘s I‘m still thinking about. Highly recommend for memorable southern storytelling.

Congratulations @BarbaraBB on your milestone, and much thanks for the opportunity to win. 💖 #spotlightgiveaway

A tender Southern coming-of-age story set in the 1960-70‘s about Tallulah James‘ dysfunctional family with past secrets that have plagued the James family since before her birth. She flees, years later after arriving home for her brothers trial secrets come to light bringing ALL truths to the surface.
I adored Tallulah + felt much compassion for her. This novel is very raw + realistic touching on all your emotions. Cannot recommend it enough. 5 ☆

RebelReader This sounds amazing! Stacking! Have you read If the Creek Don‘t Rise? It‘s another wonderful southern novel. 6y

I got this book in my Scribbler subscription box for writers & I can see why: Susan Crandall is an AMAZING writer! Deeply fleshed out characters, breathtaking setting, & the story was dark, compelling, and kept me deeply engaged. I loved the exploration of mental illness, racism, sexism & all the issues surrounding such things in the 1960s, esp. in the South. I must say, I cannot find a single flaw in this book & highly suggest it to all!

A taste of southern dysfunction, properly dosed and steaming with enough mayhem to turn a crocodile batty. Enjoyable read, past and present, of Tallulah Mae James struggle to be herself, sans the pull of her family in constant need.

This book broke my heart for multiple reasons, but ultimately it ended strong and triumphantly. ❤️ A story told in two alternating time periods (late 50s-mid 60s and early 70s) by a young white girl named Tallulah from Mississippi. The author does an amazing job of aging her voice from a 10 yo to a 27 yo. Mental illness, racism, bullying and child neglect all play a part here but so does courage, strength and hope. All the stars and then some. 5⭐️

Out June 15th, I spent today completely sucked into this story about a troubled family and the tangled web of secrets, blame, and love that pulls them apart while ensuring they will never be free. What I found most compelling about the book was not the mystery surrounding the past events but the main character, Tallulah, a young girl who tries so hard to keep her family together by taking care of everyone around her.

kyraleseberg I loved this story almost as much as Whistling Past the Graveyard! 6y
