City of Girls
City of Girls | Elizabeth Gilbert
From the # 1 New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love and The Signature of All Things, a delicious novel of glamour, sex, and adventure, about a young woman discovering that you don't have to be a good girl to be a good person. "Life is both fleeting and dangerous, and there is no point in denying yourself pleasure, or being anything other than what you are." Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance. Her affluent parents send her to Manhattan to live with her Aunt Peg, who owns a flamboyant, crumbling midtown theater called the Lily Playhouse. There Vivian is introduced to an entire cosmos of unconventional and charismatic characters, from the fun-chasing showgirls to a sexy male actor, a grand-dame actress, a lady-killer writer, and no-nonsense stage manager. But when Vivian makes a personal mistake that results in professional scandal, it turns her new world upside down in ways that it will take her years to fully understand. Ultimately, though, it leads her to a new understanding of the kind of life she craves - and the kind of freedom it takes to pursue it. It will also lead to the love of her life, a love that stands out from all the rest. Now ninety-five years old and telling her story at last, Vivian recalls how the events of those years altered the course of her life - and the gusto and autonomy with which she approached it. "At some point in a woman's life, she just gets tired of being ashamed all the time," she muses. "After that, she is free to become whoever she truly is." Written with a powerful wisdom about human desire and connection, City of Girls is a love story like no other.

A catalog of ferociously flawed characters make up this ambitious foray into New York's 20th century theater scene. Young Vivian's story was crafted so beautifully; I wish Gilbert would have stayed in her past rather than trying to span the centuries with a frame narrative. Because young Vivian's relationships were so richly developed, I didn't have it in me to care much about her final relationship which was the premise of the entire novel.

A young woman experiences the glitz and glamor of the theater scene in early 1940s New York, with showgirls and droll dialogue and lots of big personalities. The ending fell a bit flat for me but I loved the way the book came across as a love letter to the faded glamor of this particular era in New York.

@AmyG another excellent recommendation! Thank you! I stayed up too late to finish it last night.

I loved this story of 40‘s NYC theater life, our main character becoming a party girl and having All The Fun with her best friend, who is a showgirl. I could picture the costumes she was creating, and appreciate the descriptions of the shows.

I loved the later stages of her life as well, as she matured and came to learn what was more important ⬇️

Soubhiville In life. I loved so many of the characters! Vivian obviously! Peg and Olive, Edna, Margery and Frank. Even Uncle Billy was fun! This was my first by this author, but it certainly won‘t be the last! Thank you Amy. (Also, what a gorgeous cover! 😍) 2w

It took awhile to get into this book, but there was something compelling about Vivian's story that made me keep reading. I'm glad I did as I enjoyed the second half of the book better than the beginning. Vivian wasn't as self-absorbed and had gained some wisdom from her life experiences. There were as many unlikable characters as likable ones which made for an honest, realistic read.

I am drawn to imperfect characters and so I really liked this book. The ending made me cry. I think the audio book is the way to go with this one. It is read by Blair Brown and she is perfect for the part.

Guess who finally finished!!! I'm telling you, without the #audiobook for this, I don't think I would have finished. I appreciate parts of this story and the latter parts of the book were way more interesting than the first but I found myself losing interest so early on that there was no redeeming it.Listening from the beginning might have been a better choice.

I struggled with my rating for this book. On one hand, the writing was top-notch. On the other hand, I really disliked the protagonist for the majority of the book, which is off-putting in first-person narration. Still, I‘ve decided to go with “Pick,” as the writing kept me turning the pages, and I think we‘ll have a good discussion in my book club next week.

City of Girls has a page turning first half that will keep you entranced then turns a corner leaving you wondering where the story you were reading went. Set in the 40's, a privileged young woman moves to New York to live with her aunt and falls in with the "fast set" and makes disastrous choices that effect her relationships for the remainder of her long life.

City of Girls is a coming of age story of a well to do young woman from dropping out of college & moving into her aunt‘s playhouse in 1940s NYC through to her old age, with the impact of WWII & many adventures and mishaps along the way. The quirky, bohemian cast of characters she comes to know & love are ahead of their time & you will love them too despite their flaws, learning with her what it means to be human & a true friend. #20booksby2020

"Anyway, at some point in a woman's life, she just gets tired of being ashamed all the time. After that, she is free to become whoever she truly is" (377).⠀

I cannot believe how much I love this book! Elizabeth Gilbert's City of Girls is fun and sexy and surprisingly moving. Its more thought-provoking moments snuck up on me, lulled as I was by the decadence of the 1940s world of Vivian Morris. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod Vivian, who has disappointed her family by failing out of Vassar, is living with her eccentric Aunt Peg in New York and pulled into Peg's seedy theater. When events conspire to bring Peg's estranged husband Billy and eminent British theater actress into their lives, increased scrutiny and success change their world. I love Gilbert's evocation of the setting--both the time and place are so vivid-- 3mo
UnabridgedPod and the simultaneous extravagance of New York and sinister encroachment of the war are in the background of every moment. ⠀

Vivian shares her story as a letter to the daughter of a friend, and watching her reconcile her own past behavior, her attitudes toward sex and love, and her place as a woman among women was absolutely entrancing. It's rare to read such a perfect novel.

I was impressed with the book, at least the first 3/4. Having found Eat, Pray, Love to be overhyped, I was pleased by Gilbert's fiction.Vivian moves into her aunt's theater before WWII. She becomes the costume designer and enjoys NY life. After a famous couple is displaced from their home in England, this small theater becomes the home of a new show. The plot changes when the show ends and the book continues, making me feel mislead and frustrated.

Pickpick

Loved this one. The setting and the characters jumped right off the page. Elizabeth Gilbert is great. Also, I listened to the #audiobook which was amazing. Makes me want to visit nyc which I still have yet to do!
Ps-- how perfectly do these fall flowers match the cover!?

Mamashep I thought Blair Brown was the perfect person to read this book! 3mo
