Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom | John O'Donohue
Discover the Celtic Circle of Belonging John O'Donohue, poet, philosopher, and scholar, guides you through the spiritual landscape of the Irish imagination. In Anam Cara, Gaelic for "soul friend," the ancient teachings, stories, and blessings of Celtic wisdom provide such profound insights on the universal themes of friendship, solitude, love, and death as: Light is generous The human heart is never completely born Love as ancient recognition The body is the angel of the soul Solitude is luminous Beauty likes neglected places The passionate heart never ages To benatural is to be holy Silence is the sister of the divine Death as an invitation to freedom

All through Celtic poetry you find the colour, power, and intensity of nature.
How beautifully it recognizes the wind, the flowers, the breaking of the waves on the land. Celtic spirituality hallows the moon and adores the life force of the sun.

So quiet and peaceful. Listening to bird songs.A early morning runner goes by my porch. A reddish brown coyote runs from across my street. It‘s 5:30 a.m, and for this moment all is well with the world.

“The first fingers of light appear on the horizon, and ever so deftly and gradually, they pull the mantle of darkness away from the world.” -John O‘Donohue, Anam Cara

Sometimes it‘s a challenge to look for the light.

I found this a very moving and beautiful book to read.
The writer was some philosopher and a really great writer. There was so much to this book and the Celtic element.

There is so much wisdom and understanding of human nature and how we are losing touch with what is really important in this modern busy world that was very refreshing to read.

I made a New Year's resolution to try to read something uplifting or inspirational every day, even if it's only a few sentences. This little gem has fit the bill for the past week. I especially loved Chapter 3, "Solitude is Luminous".

LauraBrook Glad you love this one. It's been (unread) on my shelves since college. Will have to go and find it and finally read it! 8y
MrBook Awesome! 8y
Readerann @LauraBrook It was a random pick at the library, but 50 pages in I decided I had to order my own copy so I could underline! 8y

#BookMail today includes 3 books from my #LitsyAtoZChallenge , and all three are absolutely gorgeous and I cannot wait to read! It also includes Kaysen's #ImaginationLibrary book for January. I cannot stress enough how wonderful the program is! Free book each month for your child until he/she turns 5. Each child gets a book, not by household. See if it is available in your area or see if you would be willing to set it up in your area! 📚🙌😊

kalinichta Just stacked Death. Looks fascinating. 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @obviateit us, too!!! We mailed off her application the day we got home from the hospital! She really loves reading them as soon as we get them. I am really excited for when she is older and she knows it is addressed to her ❤ 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @kalinichta It is a bunch of essays from people who deal with death in every day life. The last one looks like I will be amazing, it is an essay from a Death Row warden. I REALLY want to skip to that one, but... I will be patient. 😁 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @Lose.Yourself.In.A.Book You may actually really like the main book, Anam Cara. If you scroll down on its profile, people have posted a few quotes from it. ❤ 8y
kalinichta Sounds so good. Definitely looking forward to seeing what you think of it. 8y
mom2bugnbee My girls both participated in the Imagination Library. It was a bittersweet day when my younger received her last book! 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @mom2bugnbee I bet 😩 It means no more fun books for them and Kindergarten and growing up and so much emotion! You might be interested in Little Passports. Not free, but we plan on moving to that when Kaysen is in school. They have one option for younger kids, I think 6-10 and one for older 9-14. They do scientific experiments and global awareness of cultures 😊 8y

One of the tasks of true friendship is to listen compassionately and creatively to the hidden silences. Often secrets are not revealed in words, they lie concealed in the silence between the words or in the depth of what is unsayable between two people.

Kimzey Love John O'Donohue! I'm so sad he died so young. 8y
Suet624 Yes. The silences are where it's at. I love O'Donohue. 8y

There is the solitude of suffering, when you go through darkness that is lonely, intense, and terrible. Words become powerless to express your pain; what others hear from your words is so distant and different from what you are actually suffering.

Suet624 Love, love, love this book and his writing. 8y

"With the Anam Cara you could share your inner-most self, your mind and your heart. This friendship was an act of recognition and belonging." Don't we all need an Anam Cara in our lives??

shawnmooney I used to have this book, and remember reading at least a few pages of it…which made a great impression on me. I wish I still had it and had actually read the entire volume! 9y
Imagineannie I love this book. 9y
ramyasbookshelf @shawnmooney get it again! It's such a great book to have on hand and just read passages here and there.. 9y
ramyasbookshelf @Imagineannie know of any more like this?? 9y
Imagineannie @ramyasbookshelf let me think I love him and this book, but I'm actually Buddhist and much likelier to be reading about that than Celtic spirituality. Have you read Thomas Moore? 9y
