[#BookReview] Echo North by Joanna Ruth Meyers. This was such a fantastic fairy-tale retelling that I fell in love with almost instantly. This genre is one that can be hit or miss for me, but this one blew me away. I loved the writing, romance, love of books and storytelling. I think this is one of the best fairy-tale retellings I‘ve read.

Fairy tales, Greek myths, and memes (by the academic definition) came up in lit discussion with the teen readers who meet at my work.

I lost a grant request for this program yesterday and it suuuuuuucks.

The authors voice really does lend itself to this type of dark fantasies/folklore/Grimm Brothers content but OMG STOP DOING DAMN BEAUTY AND THE BEAST RETELLINGS! This book is by no means bad but it offers nothing new to the "girl taken from forest to save father and held with beast who is actually being held by witch and he transforms" concept.

Stumbled upon this one on Goodreads. It's a Beauty and the Beast (with a sprinkle of a few other fairy tales) retelling and it sounds awesome.

Anyone read it?

GingerAntics Sounds interesting!!! 5y
GingerAntics I‘m still not sure I want to read it. My experience with YA fiction has not be good, so usually that classification alone will stop me even trying a book. 5y
JazzFeathers @GingerAntics l'm not too keep on YA either (l used to read it. A long time ago). Still, if a story sounds this good, l will give it a chance. 5y
GingerAntics I think I‘ll wait and see what you think. That seems safe...unless my library actually gets a copy. 5y

I wept in the snow and crumbled to ash, for I was only pages in a book, burned and lost and gone forever.

I think Meyer has great potential, but I had a lot of issues with how she chose to approach this tale. Relationship dynamics in reworkings of East of the Sun, West of the Moon/Beauty and the Beast/Tam Lin can be tricky. I wasn‘t satisfied that the hero was worth the sacrifice here.

Avanders Hey chica — also checking in re #sffs — have you had a chance to send your package yet? Thanks! 😘 6y
ReadingRover @Avanders yup it‘s out. Will be there Monday priority mail. Tuesday if there are any delays. One thing didn‘t fit in so I‘m sending it separately but it‘s small and not a book so I need to get a box it fits or stuff to add to the box so it‘s not otherwise empty 🤪 6y
Avanders Awesome! 👏🏽👏🏽💃🏽♥️ lol I know the feeling.. one thing didn‘t fit in mine too and I sent it in a separate little box 😁 6y

Second weekend book. I have always loved the fairytale East of the Sun West of the Moon so whenever a book pops out based on that, my Wanna Wanna-radar starts beeping.

So far so good, but no wow factor (yet). But the cover is stunning..

CleverBaggins That one was good, but like you said, no wow factor for me either. 6y

This book was inspired by several of my favorites and managed to capture that wondering fairy tale feeling remarkably well. The farther on I read, though, the less I liked the main character. Its not a horrible book by any means but Echo went from a girl of action, fighting back against the forest and people treating her badly to just going with the flow. I might like this one better another time when I'm more in the mood for a fairy tale.

Long, hard week. What better time to dive into a book that is not only in my favorite genre, dark fairy tale, but also by someone I know and want to support? The opening pages are gorgeous and intriguing. And just look at this cover art! 😍

I am a sucker for retellings of any type of any fairytale. So, this was right up my alley. I love how different this was from other retellings I‘ve read in the past and how the magic system and world building was done. I could not put this book down. And now I‘m off to read a new release that is also a retelling. 😂

I already hit 24 hours, but I‘ll read for another hour before I go to bed (10pm mst-I have to wake up at 6 for work), so I‘ll start this. I could have chose to read another arc that comes out the 5th, but I‘ll just read one of the books I bought. Good luck to everyone for the next hour with #24in48 and #24monday! You guys got this! 😊💜

Dropping it. It didn‘t get good within 50 pages and I don‘t have time to suffer through more and see if it does. Shame, I was looking forward to this one.

Three chapters in. Another retelling of my favorite fairy tale “East of the Moon and West of the Sun”. Already spotted elements borrowed from Slavic tales and lifestyle, okay, we‘ll see how it‘ll work ( though felt boots and elaborately embroidered sarafan, my word, that‘s a silly look, there were other shoe options. Just saying.)

I like this cover but I feel it tells me nothing about the book. Your thoughts?

GlassAsDiamonds Having read the blurb now... yeah... nothing. I thought there was Norse feel but that seems to be missing from the book... 6y
RainyDayReading I don‘t know much about it aside from it‘s a loose Beauty and the Beast retelling? In which case I get fairytale vibes from the tree...vine things...on the side and like @GlassAsDiamonds I get the Norse feel with the wolves...maybe the “magic” to it has to do with Norse mythology? I know they‘ve got some cool ones regarding wolves. 6y
