Inspired by fascinating, true, yet little-known events during World War II, The Long Flight Home is a testament to the power of courage in our darkest hoursa moving, masterfully written story of love and sacrifice. It is September 1940a year into the warand as German bombs fall on Britain, fears grow of an impending invasion. Enemy fighter planes blacken the sky around the Epping Forest home of Susan Shepherd and her grandfather, Bertie. After losing her parents to influenza as a child, Susan found comfort in raising homing pigeons with Bertie. All her birds are extraordinary to Susanloyal, intelligent, beautifulbut none more so than Duchess. Hatched from an egg that Susan incubated in a bowl under her grandfathers desk lamp, Duchess shares a special bond with Susan and an unusual curiosity about the human world. Thousands of miles away in Buxton, Maine, a young crop-duster pilot named Ollie Evans has decided to travel to Britain to join the Royal Air Force. His quest brings him to Epping and to the National Pigeon Service, where Susan is involved in a new, covert assignment. Codenamed Source Columba, the mission aims to air-drop hundreds of homing pigeons in German-occupied France. Many will not survive. Those that do make the journey home to England can convey crucial information on German troop movementsand help reclaim the skies from the Luftwaffe. The friendship between Ollie and Susan deepens as the mission date draws near. When Ollies plane is downed behind enemy lines, both know how remote the chances of reunion must be. Yet Duchesss devotion and her singular sense of duty will become an unexpected lifeline, relaying messages between Susan and Ollie as war rages onand proving, at last, that hope is never truly lost.

WOW do I love historical fiction! This book is based on true events of pigeons being used to carry messages/intelligence during WWII. Although the characters and many events in the book are fictional, I am fascinated by stories like this! I love to learn more details about little known historical events and it always piques my interest to learn more! I enjoyed alternating between Susan and Ollie each chapter and really enjoyed the book ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Wwii novel about a pigeon service. Not what I was expecting. Cool characters who are nuanced and not perfect. I read a lot of historical fiction in wwii and i learned something in this one, which is fun.

Great story! I love historical fiction and this story did not disappoint. Susan and her grandfather Bertie raised homing pigeons that ended up being used for WWII. Great characters and storyline.

This book was fantastic! It was such an interesting perspective on WWII! I love HF and it seems like all historical fiction is revolving around WWII (there have been other wars, authors, come on!). This one centers around pigeon farmers who are infiltrated into the war effort! Did you know homing pigeons were used during the war? I didn't! And I loved that the author used real facts to go with his fictional story!

The historical aspect of pigeons being used by the Brits during WWII was quite interesting to read about. From that perspective, I really enjoyed this work of #historicalfiction. What I didn't enjoy was the sappy, predictable #instalove story that served as the framework for the novel. Overall a pick, as the book is well-written and a quick, easy read. #WWII #romance #birds #pigeons #secretmission #onceuponabookclub
