Gods of Jade and Shadow
Gods of Jade and Shadow | Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The Mayan God of Death sends a young woman on a harrowing, life-changing journey in this dark fairy tale inspired by Mexican folklore, for readers of The Song of Achilles and Uprooted. Here we shall begin to tell a story: a tale of a throne lost, of monsters and magic. A tale of gods and of the shadow realm. But this, our story, it begins in our world, in the land of mortals. It begins with a woman. For this story, it is her story. It begins with her. The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather's house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty, small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own. Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather's room. She opens it--and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan God of Death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea's demise, but success could make her dreams come true. In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey, from the jungles of Yucatn to the bright lights of Mexico City--and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld. Mixing the excitement of the Roaring Twenties with Prehispanic mythology, Gods of Jade and Shadow is a vivid, wildly imaginative historical fantasy.

I saw a lot of mixed reviews for this book, but my library had the audio so I decided to listen to it while I did my weekend chores. I enjoyed this a lot, the myths, gods, quests and magic. It was different and I finished it in one straight listen, also my chores didn't get done☺

I'm glad I got to finish this before going into the hospital, it was fantastic. It was a dark, mythic style story about family, stories, and love. I was sincerely surprised by the themes that ultimately manifested by the end of this. If you're even remotely interested in it, definitely give it a try.

A pick for me. Setting it in the 1920s was inspired & Mexico in the jazz age came alive in the author's descriptions. And I've never read any Mayan mythology, so that was enjoyable & now I'm eager to learn more.

I found the experience of reading this book strangely restful - it does retain a mythic feel and is set at a deliberate, almost stately pace. Some cheesy bits, especially towards the end, but I understand why they need to be there.

This felt very much like a YA novel (and it could've been ::ahem:: steamier), but it was very enjoyable, even if I couldn't fully visualize the road trip aspect of it. I now want to re-read the Popol Vuh, which I'd not thought of for decades!

BennettBookworm I couldn‘t agree more about the steaminess! I kept thinking, is this flirting with being a romance novel? But then it superrrrr wasn‘t haha 1w

A thoroughly unique & imaginative story! I love that we‘re getting more fantasy books based on something other than white European mythology, and learning a bit about Mayan folklore was fascinating. The prose is lovely and the characters are very memorable, especially Casiopea & Hun-Kamé. It did get a bit slow at times, and Martín was not as engaging for me, but I still really enjoyed this, and the ending!!! Great start to my reading year. 4/5 ⭐️

“Why?”
“Because they must die.”

“That‘s sad,” she said finally.
“Death? It is unavoidable, not sad.”
“No, not death,” she said. “That you don‘t dream.”
“Why would I need to dream? It means nothing. Those are but the tapestries of mortals, woven & unwoven each night on a rickety loom.”
“They can be beautiful.”
“As if there‘s no other beauty to be had,” he said dismissively.
“There‘s little of it for some,” she replied

In 1920s Mexico, Casiopea is stuck in a small village with her cruel relatives, until she accidentally frees the Mayan God of Death. This is a fascinating historical fantastical coming of age story with a slightly detached writing style that nonetheless fits the content. Definitely recommended.

This was a fun read. Casiopea, a young woman living in rural Mexico, accidentally unleashes the Mayan god of death and goes on a journey to help him and herself. Infused with Mexican and Maya culture,I had Google nearby the whole time. (The author actually added a glossary in the back too!) I missed some of the mythological references/hints, but luckily I read this book as part of a buddy read and got a lot of insight from my fellow readers.

I didn‘t think I would like this book at first because of mythology explored. It has a very Mythological Mexican Cinderella quality to it. A young girl is despised by her family and made to be the “maid” of the house. A lie forces her to remain home while the family takes a trip, which leads to Cassiopeia learning some truths about her grandfather (major side eye to Pops). Eye-opening and exciting page-turner of a book. Would definitely recommend

I‘ve only recently discovered Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and she‘s already become one of my must-buy authors.

In this Cinderella-adjacent tale steeped in Mexican folklore, Casiopea dreams of escaping a life of drudgery in her grandfather‘s home. When she snoops in a mysterious black chest in her grandfather‘s room, she finds the bones of Hun-Kamé, the Mayan god of death, and is soon off on a quest to recover his throne in the underworld.

Omg, I could go on such a rant right now about public school, but instead I'm just going to spend my prep period reading a new book because I need to unwind.
Basically, my VP just told me that I'm a glorified babysitter and to exempt kids if they say they don't want to do work. This is after I came to her bc a kid freaked out because I gave the class a worksheet that he didn't want to do. I'm not getting my Masters to babysit teenagers. 🤦🏼‍♀️

ljuliel Not my business because my kids have been out of school for a LONG TIME , but I liked how they taught when I was in school . They were tougher on the kids. You did your work or got an F . You NEVER disrespected an adult . I think it would have been better to be a teacher in the 60s. They spoke softly but carried a big stick. ( honestly, 2 of my teachers carried sticks and would PROD you in the hallway if you stopped to talk between classes. (edited) 4mo
Sace I kind of need this conversation today. I've been wrestling with a colleague about this this week. He's proud his class is easy yet is convinced the students are mastering standards. Yet they are not ready when they get to the next teacher. I think a true education is challenging. 4mo
Sace At the same time I recognize that minority children did not benefit back in the "good old days" (trust me, I wish there was more personal responsibility too.) I wish I could find a balance in my own personal philosophy. Clearly 25 years in education mean nothing. And as a Spanish teacher in the deep south I'm pretty sure I'm considered a babysitter. ? 4mo
See All 20 Comments
Rachel.Rencher @ljuliel I need a happy medium between those days and today. I have many students who think it's okay to walk all over me, and they act like smug little bastards when they come back from administration unscathed. Even when I was in HS less than ten years ago, if I had refused to do my homework and started a riot in class I would have been suspended. 4mo
Rachel.Rencher @RestlessFickleBookHoarder This is something that I see everywhere at my school. I got lesson plans from another teacher because I took over this class last minute, and the other teacher would STILL be doing ice breakers and there are a lot of "movies as curriculum". I had a student yell at me because I hadn't given them a coloring assignment yet and they saw posters in the hall from the other class. I'm just so amazed at how this is acceptable 4mo
ljuliel According to what my grandson tells me, there are no consequences. Doing your schoolwork is optional. They let it slide and pass the kids whether they do the work or they don‘t. Where‘s the incentive or rules for kids who really need an extra push or extra help ? Kids did not disrespect teachers in our day. They still gave whacks for misbehavior. I‘m sure that‘s not a very popular opinion in today‘s world, but it worked for us. 4mo
ravenlee Honestly, this is part of why I honeschool my daughter. I don‘t want her around that kind of environment. 4mo
ljuliel @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I can‘t really comment with any information on that situation. I grew up in a backwater where we had 100% white kids. Sadly, they probably wouldn‘t have fared too well here because of that. I‘m also from the North, so don‘t know what schools are like down south. I commend anyone who is a teacher. It takes the patience of a saint , and sadly, so many teachers today sound less than happy with the “ rules” in their schools 4mo
Sace And I honestly understand every point of view represented here. Trust me I am just as frustrated by smug bastards (had about 70 of them last year) and lack of consequences. But I also have a lot of students where private school and homeschooling is not an option and my heart aches that they have to deal with ridiculous educational policy and disruptive classmates and I am at a MAGNET high school. 4mo
Sace Education is supposed to be a great equalizer but an equal education is not available to all and I'm starting to feel like I've wasted 25 years of my life /melodramatic wailing 😩 4mo
Sace Ugh *are not an option 🙄 4mo
GingerAntics I feel like a glorified babysitter half the time, too. The other half I feel like a slave driver for busy work that we all know is pointless. 🙄 I feel like either way, I‘m spoon feeding 17 year olds mashed up carrots. 4mo
SleepyDragon I see threads like this and my heart sinks. My sister is a teacher and has been hospitalized twice for breakdowns. She worked hard to go back to school to be a teacher and now hates it. She's at a school where the principal actively plots against her, and parents call her racist instead of dealing with their children's behavioral issues. She wants to leave but is scared of starting over in another district. Cont. 4mo
SleepyDragon It breaks my heart bc the district my kids are in isn't nearly as bad as hers or as ehat you guys are describing. The principals my son has had so far back the teachers for the most part. He's in jr high now and so far personal responsibility has always been stressed. They have incredible intervention programs so kids don't get left behind. The jr high seems incredibly strict avout doing the work. Only thing is they pay the teachers squat here. 4mo
SleepyDragon Ignore typos, please. 4mo
jmtrivera I'm so sorry. It's hard to be a dedicated teacher with so little support. Take the You Time. You deserve it. 💜 4mo
Rachel.Rencher @ravenlee I so don't blame you. That's awesome that you're doing that for your kiddo ❤❤ 4mo
Rachel.Rencher @GingerAntics Yes! Omg I literally had a kid smash playdoh into his freaking test and then got mad when I told him to redo it because I couldn't read his answers. Like I'm sorry, what the hell is going on?! 4mo
Rachel.Rencher @SleepyDragon I'm so glad your kiddos have a good environment. ❤ The district I grew up in was like that, but I moved to a bigger city for more job opportunities and clearly the quality is lacking here. 4mo
Rachel.Rencher @jmtrivera Thank you ❤❤❤ 4mo

I‘m always impressed with stand-alones that also include a believable slow-burn romance, & this one is does it extremely well. The blossoming relationship between Casiopea & Hun-Kamé is perfectly paced alongside a dark, beautifully constructed fairytale plot involving gods, demons, & more. Even more impressive, the ending stayed true to the characters & the story, & left me feeling curiously satisfied and unsatisfied all at once. ★★★★☆.
