#CuriousCovers - Bird: I know this book was purchased. I know because of that bird on the cover. I know because of the blues and the purple shades of color. I know because of the look of the countryside and the stately manors in the background. And then the story. I know that I would never have passed it by. It‘s here...somewhere in this house waiting to be gazed upon for such a lovely cover and wanting to be read for hopefully an engaging story.

I liked this book so much I bought it twice! After passing my original copy on to my mom, I later was bummed I no longer had it, so what did do? I of course ordered another copy. (Ha ha.) From the beautiful cover art, to the steadfast, stubborn, yet lovable character of Susan Shepherd, this novel is an utter gem.

During WW2 , in England, homing pigeons were drafted into military service. Having exceptional intelligence and stamina, the pigeons were well suited to carry secret messages back and forth, across enemy lines. Atrocities of war were balanced with extraordinary examples of sacrificial kindness. There were examples of justifiable despair and never ending hope. Add to this a love story and a wonderful ending. I really enjoyed this book!

Brit Susan and American Ollie meet by chance in 1940, when she is working with the National Pigeon Service to deploy her homing pigeons into German-occupied France. This book illustrates an interesting bit of history about which I knew nothing, and I enjoyed it. It‘s definitely a flawed first novel that I could nitpick, but it‘s worth reading.

One of the later chapters of The Genius of Birds discussing homing pigeons, which have been used by humans for 8000(!) years. So I decided to do a fiction pairing and start this historical fiction next, based on a true stories of these birds in WWII.

WOW do I love historical fiction! This book is based on true events of pigeons being used to carry messages/intelligence during WWII. Although the characters and many events in the book are fictional, I am fascinated by stories like this! I love to learn more details about little known historical events and it always piques my interest to learn more! I enjoyed alternating between Susan and Ollie each chapter and really enjoyed the book ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Wwii novel about a pigeon service. Not what I was expecting. Cool characters who are nuanced and not perfect. I read a lot of historical fiction in wwii and i learned something in this one, which is fun.

Great story! I love historical fiction and this story did not disappoint. Susan and her grandfather Bertie raised homing pigeons that ended up being used for WWII. Great characters and storyline.

This book was fantastic! It was such an interesting perspective on WWII! I love HF and it seems like all historical fiction is revolving around WWII (there have been other wars, authors, come on!). This one centers around pigeon farmers who are infiltrated into the war effort! Did you know homing pigeons were used during the war? I didn't! And I loved that the author used real facts to go with his fictional story!

The historical aspect of pigeons being used by the Brits during WWII was quite interesting to read about. From that perspective, I really enjoyed this work of #historicalfiction. What I didn't enjoy was the sappy, predictable #instalove story that served as the framework for the novel.
