"Taut, absorbing and psychologically astute, in A Good Enough Mother Bev Thomas combines all the tension of a thriller with the emotional resonance of a powerful family drama."--Paula Hawkins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Girl on the Train "Perfect for fans of The Silent Patient." --Booklist A riveting page-turner that lets us inside the secret world of therapist and patient, where boundaries get crossed, and events spiral out of control. . . Ruth Hartland is a psychotherapist with years of experience. But professional skill is no guard against private grief. The mother of grown twins, she is haunted by the fact that her beautiful, difficult, fragile son Tom, a boy who never "fit in," disappeared a year and a half earlier. She cannot give up hope of finding him, but feels she is living a kind of half-life, waiting for him to return. Enter a new patient, Dan--unstable and traumatized--who looks exactly like her missing son. She is determined to help him, but soon, her own complicated feelings, about how she has failed her own boy, cloud her professional judgement. And before long, the unthinkable becomes a shattering reality.... An utterly compelling drama with a timebomb at its core, A Good Enough Mother is a brilliant, beautiful story of mothering, and how to let go of the ones we love when we must.

If you like psychology and slower paced thrillers you‘ll probably enjoy this. Very focused in therapy, psychological insights, motherhood and trauma which really worked for me. I couldn‘t put it down. Only slight is I did have to suspend belief with the twist at the end - the author wanted the characters motivation and behaviour to be believable but it didn‘t ring quite true for me.

Hmm this was a tricky one… I feel like this book lacked direction and meandered along without a gripping main storyline. From a mother‘s viewpoint, I felt for the main character, however I didn‘t really care much either way.

The book almost reminded me of a memoir style read - the author does actually work in mental health services, so I guess this rings somewhat true.

Slow read where not much happens.

I won‘t say this is a bad book per se, but it‘s not my cup of tea. The pacing felt off - too wordy, too full of explanations, initially, followed by a strange, detached narrative later on, with the narrator not being central to events.

Fundamentally, though, my main issue with this is the same as I have for any psychological thriller - the main character always makes several stupid, completely out-of-character decisions!

It turned out to be completely different to what I expected. I enjoyed reading about the relationship between a therapist and a patient from the therapist‘s POV. While I think there were parts that I wasn‘t sure where on earth this is going, I‘m still going to give it a pick and recommend it to those of you who like psychology

I was immensely annoyed by the ‘good enough mother‘ in this book and how her personal drama influenced her work as a therapist. All that psychology, a bit too much and too obvious for me. Yet I couldn‘t stop reading.

Thomas illustrated the mother's grief well. I'm just left with what did I read and why? 🤔

I thought this was brilliant. While it‘s about a clinical psychologist, her work, and her missing son, there are so many psychological themes raised- I particularly enjoyed seeing the therapeutic relationship play out. However, I can see why this might not appeal to all. It‘s not fast-paced and there is a lot of therapy chair work described. Also, it‘s focused on a trauma therapy unit, so there are many triggers. But it was so in my wheelhouse!

BarbaraBB Love your pics and I think I‘d love the book too. 5y

Ruth is a psychologist who works with troubled young individuals. She is also the mother of twins - on of whom has gone missing in the last year. She gets a new patient who just happens to look like her missing son. Of course, drama ensues.

I like the premise, but I'm not crazy about the execution. There's a lot of therapy sessions scenes and the book is starting to feel repetitive. Hoping it picks up in the next half.

Book 4/10 of my #bookfitnesschallenge is done!

I enjoyed the psychological parts of this book, but I felt that there was a lot missing. The writing was good, but cloudy at a lot of times for me. I needed more answers than what we‘re given.

A beautifully written and emotional story which is quite dark in places. It gives a great insight into the world of the therapist and their patients. It‘s a slow burner and fairly intense in its telling with a gradual build up of foreboding and uneasiness. The characters are well drawn. A thought provoking, engaging, and moving read which I would recommend to those who prefer something a little different to your usual chiller thriller.

VanessaCW Yes, I am enjoying it so far. Quite compelling and a bit foreboding in a way. I‘m expecting something menacing to happen. I‘m reading it in staves via the Pigeonhole app and have read five so far. Nine altogether so four to go. 6y
