Into the Forest
Into the Forest | Jean Hegland
Set in the near-future, Into the Forest is a powerfully imagined novel that focuses on the relationship between two teenage sisters living alone in their Northern California forest home. Over 30 miles from the nearest town, and several miles away from their nearest neighbor, Nell and Eva struggle to survive as society begins to decay and collapse around them. No single event precedes society's fall. There is talk of a war overseas and upheaval in Congress, but it still comes as a shock when the electricity runs out and gas is nowhere to be found. The sisters consume the resources left in the house, waiting for the power to return. Their arrival into adulthood, however, forces them to reexamine their place in the world and their relationship to the land and each other. Reminiscent of Margaret Atwood's A Handmaid's Tale, Into the Forest is a mesmerizing and thought-provoking novel of hope and despair set in a frighteningly plausible near-future America. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Let the weekend begin.
So far enjoying this one, although I didn't really pay attention to the blurb on the back when I picked it off my shelf, probably not the best selection for current times, but hey, I'm in it now.
Just noticing the rather unfortunately placed bookmark in this photo 🧐

Jas16 Thank you for pointing out the bookmark! 😂 4y

This book is a trip. Really well-written dystopian set in the Northern California wilderness in a not-so-distant future. Some unlikely stuff happens, and some seriously weird stuff happens, and this book needs pretty much all the trigger warnings. But it‘s so good!

My full review is on my blog, and I kept it spoiler free: http://sprainedbrain.blog/2019/12/05/into-the-forest-by-jean-hegland-kept-me-up-...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Amiable I read this one years ago —I remember being rather unsettled by it. 5y

I just finished the tagged book... I was just going to read for a bit, and now it‘s 1 am and I‘m going to need some time to process (and sleep) before I can review it. This book is a trip.

It was my last book for #ReadingWomenChallenge, so I have finished my first challenge for the year. 🙌🏻

Will it be worth how exhausted/worthless I‘m going to be at work tomorrow? Who‘s to say!

I have no compassion for my own poor nerves. 🤪

ljuliel You‘re doing great ! It looks as though you‘re close to finishing up some of your others also. 5y

This books tells the story of two sisters, Nell and Eva, who were forced to embark on an initiatory journey into a world in pieces.
I was puzzled by a few passages, but I came to understand their usefulness.
I really enjoyed it.

Two sisters learn how to live without all the things they thought they needed. This one is excellent. #letthingsgo #happinessisresistance @writerlibrarian

Zelma This is one of my favorites! I recommend it all the time and no one seems to ever like it as much as I do. 7y
Mindyrecycles @Zelma -- I'm sorry to hear that -- it's one of the few books that I recommend that everyone has liked. Once I chose Rebecca for a book club and everybody else hated it. It was an outrage. 7y
Zelma @Mindyrecycles *whispers* Rebecca was just ok for me. 😆 7y

This book was amazing. Very raw and honest look at the breakdown of society, familial loss, and the bond between sisters even as the world ends.

DiruVamp I didn't realize this was a book! I saw the movie and it was so good! But I am partial to Ellen Page so maybe I'm biased haha 7y

You guys. This was written in 1996. "People...were seething with frustration, rage, and despair. Schoolchildren were shooting each other at recess. Grown-ups were opening fire on strangers in fast-food restaurants. But all those things had been happening for so long they seemed almost normal, and as things got darker and more uncertain, people began to grasp at new explanations for what was going wrong."

Up next. I started this a couple months ago but had to return it to the library. I highly recommend the movie--Evan Rachel Wood and Ellen Page are both incredible in it.

My #Recommendsday pick. This 1998 IPPY winner has yet to fail to please those to whom I've suggested it. Teenaged sisters must fend for themselves in post-apocalyptic Northern California. Excellent!

I really enjoyed this book. I read it a year ago, and I'm still thinking about how far from the nature I live. And how much food I really have at home when I say I have nothing to eat. I have a big problem with it though, but that is a spoiler, so I'll write about it in the comments.

MyBookLife I mean, come on, the sex between the sisters?? Could have so lived without that part! And it was told as if it was nothing strange, on the contrary, it solved all their problems. NOT believable. At all. It is such a shame, it nearly ruined the whole book for me!! Did you read it? What did you think? 8y
Simona @MyBookLife I didn't read it, but I read your spoiler and now I'm curious 👍 8y
MyBookLife @Simona haha! It is sooo weird!! If you read it, please let me know what you thought about it!! 8y
