You Had Me at Woof
You Had Me at Woof: How Dogs Taught Me the Secrets of Happiness | Julie Klam
12 posts | 14 read | 13 to read
The hilarious and heartfelt chronicle of a woman learning the secrets of love, health, and happiness from some very surprising teachers: her dogs. Julie Klam was thirty, single, and working as a part-time clerk in an insurance company, wondering if she would ever meet the man she could spend the rest of her life with. And then it happened. She met the irresistible Otto, her first in a long line of Boston terriers, and fell instantly in love. You Had Me at Woof is the often hilarious and always sincere story of how one woman discovered life's most important lessons from her relationships with her canine companions. From Otto, Julie realized what it might feel like to find "the one." She learned to share her home, her heart, and her limited resources with another, and she found an authentic friend in the process. But that was just the beginning. Over the years her brood has grown to one husband, one daughter, and several Boston terriers. And although she had much to learn about how to care for them-walks at 2 a.m., vet visits, behavior problems-she was surprised and delighted to find that her dogs had more wisdom to convey to her than she had ever dreamed. And caring for them has made her a better person-and completely and utterly opened her heart. Riotously funny and unexpectedly poignant, You Had Me at Woof recounts the hidden surprises, pleasures, and revelations of letting any mutt, beagle, terrier, or bulldog go charging through your world.Watch a Video

After Julie Klam adopted and fully fell for her first Boston Terrier, she got involved in BT rescue in her area. Here, she shares some of her experiences and lessons learned in a lighthearted, funny way. But, of course, because this is dogs, there‘s death involved as well, which was a little tough since I lost Greta so recently (there were some tears). Bindi and I both enjoyed this!

MicheleinPhilly Bindi, you are gorgeous! 🥰 1y
Soubhiville Rescue books are always bittersweet. I love that Bindi is posing for us a bit lately. Did she get a treat this time? 💜🐶 1y
Amiable Bindi looks so much like my son's dog, Brady! He's a rescue that my son adopted as a puppy when he was stationed in Pensacola, Florida for flight school. There was a whole box of puppies-- Bindi and Brady aren't related, are they? 😃 1y

CBee Bindi is beautiful ❤️ I‘m so sorry about your loss of Greta 🙁 1y
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville Nope! 😂 She‘s going to report me to the ASPCA for sure! 1y
Hooked_on_books @Amiable No, afraid there‘s no chance of that. Bindi was born in Oregon. I knew the people who had the litter—they intended to breed their female Ridgeback/Boxer mix with a Mastiff but they also had a young male Great Dane mix (he was around 9 months I think), and guess what happens when you leave two unfixed dogs together? 😂 It turned out to be a wonderful oops. She‘s such a great dog. 1y

I‘ve had this book for awhile, but so glad I waited to read it. After my Foxy passed last year, I didn‘t know if I could ever pick it up. Not only did it help my broken heart a little, it reminded me that the love of a dog is so special. I needed that more than ever right now. This book is so honest and inspiring. I give it all the stars! Thank you @Litlady for sending this to me!!!

Litlady So glad you enjoyed it and that it brought comfort my friend! 2y
Crazeedi Memories of our fur friends are painfully beautiful, much ❤ 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ After thoroughly enjoying “The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters,” I had to grab something from Klam‘s backlist. New-to-you authors are just the best! This is a dog lover‘s memoir of her first Boston Terrier, grueling rescue work, and eventually managing a family *and* four dogs in a NYC apartment. My love for this breed, too, runs deep - RIP Frankie and Sam 🌈. Warning: You will cry your eyeballs out, so be prepared. But you‘ll laugh, too.

Cinfhen OMG!!!! THAT FACE 🥰🥰🥰 3y
BittersweetBooks I can already tell I‘m going to need a box of tissues for this one 😭🤧 3y

I was hoping for cute stories about Boston Terriers and their human, maybe a few lessons learned along the way, and assumed there'd be a little heartbreak. This did more to chronicle the author's involvement in rescuing dogs and how dogs became a part of her and her family's lives than make me wish I had met little Otto to see the cute things he does when you taunt him with his favorite treat. It does deliver on a little sadness, but again, ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick with the choice of the selected stories to tell, I just couldn't be fully invested in the dogs' lives.

I'm a Boston Terrier mom and they are my very favorite breed of dog! This was a great read to me. Definitely has it's heartbreaking moments...but I enjoyed it a lot overall.

mydearwatson You are braver than me! I usually can‘t do any books or anything about dogs/cats. 4y

A charming little doggy-tastic read about how much dogs (in this case Boston Terriers) bring into your life. Julie goes from owning her first dog Otto to volunteering to rescue and foster Boston terriers and it's through all her anecdotes that she shows how doggy companionship offers something unique to any other relationships. A nice read for dog lovers ❤🐶

I bought this book based solely on the dog on the front cover. It's a lovely story about a woman and her beloved dogs. Be warned- you will cry. #recommendsday
