The acclaimed graphic novel world of The Witch Boy and The Hidden Witch comes to a thrilling conclusion in this story of friendship, family, and finding your true power. Magic has a dark side . . . Aster always looks forward to the Midwinter Festival, a reunion of the entire Vanissen family that includes competitions in witchery and shapeshifting. This year, he's especially excited to compete in the annual Jolrun tournament-as a witch. He's determined to show everyone that he's proud of who he is and what he's learned, but he knows it won't be easy to defy tradition. Ariel has darker things on her mind than the Festival-like the mysterious witch who's been visiting her dreams, claiming to know the truth about Ariel's past. She appreciates everything the Vanissens have done for her. But Ariel still craves a place where she truly belongs. The Festival is a whirlwind of excitement and activity, but for Aster and Ariel, nothing goes according to plan. When a powerful and sinister force invades the reunion, threatening to destroy everything the young witches have fought for, can they find the courage to fight it together? Or will dark magic tear them apart?

Loved this continuation of Aster's journey as the first boy witch in his magical family. He is determined to show off his powers at the Midwinter Festival. Meanwhile his friend Ariel and the new witch ward of the family is struggling with belonging and is visited by a sinister witch in her dreams.

5🌟 I have absolutely loved this series, and this was the best one of the bunch. My only complaint is that it is the last one. I hope that Ostertag revisits these characters again because these are just great feel-good reads.

This was my book for last week's challenge for #Screamathon

A graphic novel about a winter festival that happens near the end of December seems like a perfect pick for #DecemberSong day 7: Winter Wonderland.

Another charming volume in this wonderful series. I loved the dynamics of the family competition in this book. Aster's determination to participate in the competition as the first boy witch combined with his friend's unending support is well portrayed and continues to reflect both breaking gender norms and the experiences of many LGBTQ individuals. There are also some gorgeous full page and double page spreads in this volume ❤️ #comic #LGBTQ

I'm so excited to read an actual print book for the first time since lockdown began. Oh library how I missed thee.

The idea that Aster has the right to be himself, to be a witch, not only for his own benefit but for little kids like Mica, who might see him and gain hope, is an idea that I haven‘t really considered before.

My students LOVE these books. This is the 3rd in Ostertag‘s series. Up to this point the focus has been on a single family of witches and shapeshifters. This book introduces the idea that there are other magical families and the tension between groups. I‘m excited to see where things might go from here. Great LGBTQ representation throughout the series.

MandaMT Looking at other reviews that say this is the final book not a trilogy. Dang. I was hoping for more stories from this world. 4y

This graphic novel series is really fantastic sad to read the last and final book of the Witch Boy series. I just love and enjoy this series so much.

MandaMT Final book? Dang. I thought things were just getting really interesting. I really liked the first couple books, but this one felt like it was setting the stage for lots more stories from this world. 4y
Kati15 @MandaMT So far on what I saw on Goodreads it says this is the conclusion of the Witch Boy series and I didn‘t see any other books coming out of the Witch Boy series on Goodreads or Amazon either. But probably the author will make books about Ariel. 4y

This is such a good #middlegrade #graphicnovel series about magic, gender expectations, friendship, and found family. The story‘s wraps up nicely in this one, although I found the conclusion a bit abrupt. May Aster find everything his witchy little heart desires.

Molly Knox Ostertag's The Midwinter Witch, the final book in The Witch Boy trilogy, is SUCH a fabulous conclusion to the story of Aster. (My boys have both read this one--my nine year old has read it twice!) The middle-grade graphic novel continues in the society in which women are witches and men are shapeshifters; Aster, however, is much more being a witch than the shapeshifter his gender dictates. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod As the books continue, Aster develops friendships with others whose wishes fall outside the norm, and we see him work through the prejudice and dismissal of those who don't accept his choice. ⠀

In this story, Aster and his family are attending a retreat that features witch and shapeshifter competitions--Aster decides to vie to win the title of Midwinter Witch, an honor that his sister and mother have both received. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod His mother, however, is worried that he won't be accepted and asks him not to compete. While I love the novel, it's particularly great for its audience, asking them to consider what is important in establishing one's identity and how much control family should have over that identity, as well. (There's another subplot that has some spoilers from book two, but it continues these themes about family and destiny.) ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod Overall, I absolutely love this trilogy! If you have kiddos--mine are nine and twelve, so there's a pretty great range here--I'd absolutely recommend that you pick up these books.⠀

What series finales have you been pleased with? Any great trilogies to recommend?

A great 3rd book - and a great message about just being happy in your own skin and not being bothered by anyone else. It was also a good seasonal book and made for a quick, yet enjoyable, read.
