Testaments | Margaret Atwood
In this brilliant sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, acclaimed author Margaret Atwood answers the questions that have tantalized readers for decades. When the van door slammed on Offred's future at the end of The Handmaid's Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her--freedom, prison or death. With The Testaments, the wait is over. Margaret Atwood's sequel picks up the story fifteen years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead. "Dear Readers: Everything you've ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we've been living in." --Margaret Atwood

On a day like this, I'm so glad to be working from home, on a task mundane enough to audiobook. 10 chapters in and I'm hooked! I love the concept of Baby Nicole being a symbol for both sides!

FINALLY starting this beauty!! I‘ve only been waiting since it was released to start it! 😍
I absolutely loved The Handmaid‘s Tale so this should be interesting!
I started the series before reading The Handmaid‘s Tale, not thinking I would enjoy it.
I liked it so much I stopped at the third episode and started the book!
I‘m on Season 2 now. I wonder if it will relate to this book?! 😱

#readathon #LitsyPartyOfOne #24B4Monday #MrBook1InAMillion

MrBook 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2d
marleed I binged all 3 seasons back to back before I read the book. And yes, I think the sequel respects both the original book and the adapted series. I‘m thrilled that Ms Atwood at 80 was able to revisit a story she created in her 40s. I can‘t help but wonder how I‘d complete a story had 35 years of living passed. 2d
Alora @marleed I never really thought of that! 😱 How true!! Wow! I‘m holding off on the second and third series until I finish this book 😊 2d
marleed @Alora I think of that line from the book, Angle of Repose where you look at life as a Doppler Effect. For most of a life, life is coming at you - and it is thunderously loud and blows you over. And then, it passes and you are left with quiet and stillness. She wrote this story on both sides of her Doppler Effect. 2d

How could it be better than The Handmaids Tale? And yet, it was. Wrapped up the loose ends, a reminder that the crazy religious people can be beaten. Viva Margaret Atwood.

cherinium I think you may be the first person I've seen say it was better. What did you like so much about it? Was it the fact that the loose ends were tied up? Or something else? 🤔 I have read it, so you can speak freely; but use the spoiler tag if needed for the protection of others.😉 2d

I'm struggling to give this even a so-so. I find the graphic design of the covers to be more creative than the plot 😑 Disappointed with the obviousness of it all, and kept hoping for a greater message or lesson as I read on. The last 12 pages were my favorite - would be interested to know more about the time gap than the bulk of the book.

cherinium It's nice to see someone else who was not all that impressed. I also rated it a So-So. To sum it up, the story felt forced, like Atwood was trying to live up to the hype of the series. 4d
cathipink @cherinium my expectations were high, given it's Atwood and the story is so iconic. I'm ok with a plot driven book, but I think there were missed opportunities (comparing people who only knew Gilead vs those who witnessed the transformation). I'm glad I read it bc I was curious about the book, but it was fairly forgettable. 4d

Interesting addition to the original Handmaid's tale. It answers some questions but also leaves it open to interpretation as to what actually happened on the end. Not necessarily needed as The Handmaid's Tale was perfect on its own but it was still a good companion to it.

Fortunate enough to stumble upon a copy of the audiobook on Libby! Was surprised at how much this sequel went off of the show, and they even used the actress that plays Aunt Lydia in the show as her voice character. Overall I enjoyed listening to it 🤗

I didn‘t love this. It has some of Margaret Atwood‘s verve, humour and great writing and Aunt Lydia is a strong character, but overall I found it contrived and almost YA in style. It‘s a worthy companion to The Handmaid‘s Tale, an easy read and completes the story. But it didn‘t surprise or delight me and the prose wasn‘t exhilarating by Atwood‘s (high) standards. I‘ve done a longer review on the blog. (Booksonthego.net ).

Christoffer I love this review. Short yet perceptive, appreciative yet critical. Looking forward to reading your fuller evaluation! 6d

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the ending. I‘m not certain it‘s Man Booker good, but likely a nod to her body of work, and highlighting the issues that women face daily while on this planet in 2019.

marleed I keep thinking about what it‘s like to create a world when you are in your late 40s and then what you want for it when revisiting in your 80s. It explains for me the hope in the latter. 2w

When I first read The Handmaid's tale I was a bit too young. It was also some sort of bigger edition where there was a lot of extra things that made the book feel longer and slower. After reading it I wasn't sure if Margaret Atwood was for me. The Testament was a totally different experience! I really loved it! The characters and the world felt relatable. I truly recommend this. This will truly widen the world of Gilead.

I thoroughly enjoyed this follow up to The Handmaids Tale which I read for my final year of school in 1997. The different accounts from different characters were really engaging and interesting. And the audio version read by a cast of 3 main readers was excellent. With that aside I‘m not sure it‘s Booker winner worthy.

Jerdencon I totally agree with you. It was good but didn‘t think it was award good and I‘m a fan of the original book and TV show. 2w

⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Read my review above.

I strongly believe maybe if the book was divided by Aunt Lydias perspective as one and then the two sisters as the other the entire story would be so different and more detail could have been presented.

Rushed, I was wishing for more.

I‘ll just say.. I can see why there are mixed reviews 😕 to be honest, this was QUITE boring. The storyline moved at a snails‘ pace until the very end and was only marginally interesting when it DID pick up. Also, there was not even one interesting character in the bunch. Unlike the handmaid‘s tale with its fascinating story and characters. I would‘ve dropped it if I wasn‘t so in love with the original story. ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2
⬇️ More in comment section.

HOTPock3tt I wasn‘t happy about the story alluding to the possibility that Offred was Nicole and Agnes G‘s mother. I really LOVED the ambiguous ending for her and I like to imagine different endings. Alluding to the fact that she may have been working as a May Day operative later and the girls were maybe her kids... I was hoping nothing would be said about what happened to her to let the imagination create etc. it seemed like fanservice! 😣 2w
Cathythoughts I gave this one a “ PICK “ but I don‘t feel it‘s a prize winning book by any means. I listened to the audio & did enjoy , May not have had the patience to read it though 👍🏻♥️ 2w
HOTPock3tt @Cathythoughts Oh I definitely wouldn‘t have had the patience to read it 🤣lol. I listened on audio as well. I agree, it‘s definitely not a prize winner but I couldn‘t pass up the chance to hear all that was available about this world Atwood created. I‘m glad I got to listen to it, but I‘m also VERY glad I didn‘t run out and buy it!! 😅 (edited) 2w

Compared to Handmaid‘s Tale, this was a bit disappointing. I enjoyed discovering more about Gilead, as well as the resistance movement & the world beyond. But it felt like a YA sequel in places & I don‘t think Atwood got the voice quite right for the two girls. I found the Aunt Lydia sections most compelling, especially the chilling flashbacks to the beginning of Gilead. The depth & complexity of Aunt Lydia‘s character was, I think, the best part.

I really enjoyed this! I had seen the first Handmaids Tale series on tv , but didn‘t watch the second series as I found I couldn‘t go there again - too upsetting. So , I was reluctant to read this one - but it‘s for Bookclub. The content upsetting , and told with simplicity. I listened 🎧 👍🏻. Aunt Lydia was read by the same actress who was in the show ! Really good. Would recommend the audio.

Talewaggingreads I love Margaret Atwood so I am reluctant to post anything negative, but I just cannot recommend this book. 😥Aunt Lydia was a bright spot in this otherwise not so good book. The language of the juvenile characters was reminiscent of the Twilight series of which I am not a fan. So, there is that. The ending was predictable as well. Just not for me. 2w
Cathythoughts @Talewaggingreads I listened on Audible to this one ( not sure how I would have fared reading it ) I hear what your saying... I did enjoy it , but it wasn‘t brilliant. My only real favorite Atwood is Blind Assassin - I‘m not a big fan of hers. 2w

I enjoyed the different voices on audio (although some chapters it took me a few minutes to figure out who was speaking). Overall, I enjoyed the story. I appreciated learning more about Gilead and the workings of the Aunts. With that said, it felt unnecessary and had plot choices that created needless obstacles. Perhaps trying too hard to align with the show? Not anywhere as close to as impactful as Handmaid's Tale, but I enjoyed the journey.

My book club discussed this book tonight. First question: Is this a Booker prize winning book? All seven of us said no. I read it immediately following The Handmaid‘s Tale and this felt like fan fiction. I am not a huge Atwood fan to begin with, but this just didn‘t impress me. Am I alone?

marleed Yes. She shared the 2019 Booker prize. 4w
britt_brooke I definitely don‘t think it deserved the Booker. It was fine, but not mind-blowing, and certainly nowhere near as effective as the original. 4w
Hooked_on_books I haven‘t read it, but based on all the reviews I‘ve seen, I don‘t think this should have won. It feels to me like they are rewarding her for her body of work rather than this particular book, which is not what I think should happen. 4w

A great, long awaited follow-up to The Handmaid's Tale. Margaret Atwood just tied to win the 2019 Booker Prize for this book and it didn't disappoint. The Testaments follows three different narrators: Aunt Lydia, a young girl who grew up in Gilead, & a young teen living outside Gilead in Canada. I don't want to give away much more than that.
