I still don‘t know my volunteer assignment for the #NationalBookFestival but I have my shirt! I rode the subway from LOC to the ballpark for a game tonight. While I wait for the gates to open, I‘m enjoying a salad at one of the eateries, while listening to Grateful Dead and watching tennis. I can think of worse ways to spend a late summer afternoon.

#OnThisDay in 1800 the United States' oldest cultural institution was established - the Library of Congress. In 1812 British forces burned the library down, so in 1815 Thomas Jefferson sold his 6000 book collection to Congress for $23,950. In 1988 films were added to the collection, and now the library also collects EVERY public tweet. #HistoryGetsLIT

TheKidUpstairs Of the 14 people to hold the title of Librarian of Congress, only 3 have actually been librarians. That includes the current Librarian Carla Hayden, who is also the first African American and first woman to hold the job. 2y

1. I had a wonderful government teacher in high school. He made sure all of us were registered to vote and helped all of us learn and challenge ourselves to make a better community. (He had a saying about all government starting local.) He is the reason I was a political science major in college. He was an amazing man, and I was proud to have a letter I had written read at his funeral. 💙

Megabooks @BarbaraBB my parents paid, which is nice because I think, on exchange and with shipping, it came to $75ish for the 3, so a very nice gift. And they got me socks and a booksleeve. I picked it all out, but I‘m just setting the packages on the hearth! 3y

Megabooks @BarbaraBB I talked to my dad about it and he basically said, you‘ll never win, you‘ll never get a straight answer, so just move on. And I have. But it‘s hard for me. Now that I see things more clearly, it‘s harder as an adult than even my worst years as a teen because I have to give in for the sake of my dad. Anyway...☹️ 3y

BarbaraBB I am glad you had such an honest conversation with your dad. He‘s probably right, your mother won‘t change, but it must be hard to give in against how you feel and I can imagine it somehow feels unfair. She is the adult right, and supposed to be your role model. Of course she isn‘t - most mothers are not - but still, to be the most sensible in the relationship is hard. I feel for you. I do hope you have a loving thanksgiving nevertheless ❤️😘 3y
