TODAY‘S PROMPT: FAMILY STORIES

An exclusive neighborhood, a safe neighborhood, a neighborhood with couples and children.

Added to this perfect place came a single woman who didn't really fit it, but wanted to get to know everyone.

THE FAMILY NEXT DOOR doesn't refer to one family but to all the families in the neighborhood.

While this wasn‘t as twisty as it could have been, I did enjoy it very much…. Easy to read with a compelling plot.

A busy week with not much time to myself calls for a Friday arvo op shop splurge. Love me some 80s earrings and a homemade blanket. The envelopes are for Litsy Love of course. The tea cup is to add to my eclectic collection. The necklace reminded me of love beads. Grand total $8!

Soubhiville What a neat tea cup. I‘m not sure I‘ve seen antique ones with two handles. It‘s really pretty. 2y

AmyG My in-laws had a huge setnof china. They had teacups with one handle and with 2 handles. Anyone know wht that is for? 2y

This was my second Sally Hepworth book and I really enjoy her style. This was a bit too soapy, but a good listen and it had a few really touching moments.

This is my third read of Hepworth and I‘m really liking her books. This one focuses on 4 women and their families in one neighborhood and the things going on behind closed doors. Really great family drama. I read this one to my mom and she liked it so much she was listening to the audio files as soon as they arrived instead of her pattern of listening the next day. I love that!

I read this book during strict Covid lockdowns where we had to remain within a 5km perimeter of our homes.... unwittingly this was the perfect atmosphere for me to read all about the residents of Pleasant Court. I loved delving into the characters lives and their secrets. Sally Hepworth has a way of interweaving her characters lives in ways that always surprise me as they are revealed. How well does anyone know their neighbours? ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the second Sally Hepworth book I‘ve read and I thought it was better than the first. I was engaged throughout and I think each character had enough detail to keep me invested.

An engaging and satisfying read! This is my second book by Hepworth and I like her style. She sort of reminds me of Liane Moriarty. At first it was hard keeping the characters straight but then later I had no problem. I was surprised by how everything turned out. Overall, I recommend it!

I enjoyed this story about a neighborhood full of people with secrets. It reminded me of Big Little Lies, which I liked immensely. This is my second Sally Hepworth novel and I have reserved more of her books at my library.

I‘m amused by Ange‘s perspectives on social media and her addiction to it. Therefore I will use social media to say something boring and post a picture taken in front of a Dumpster while waiting for someone to photograph a brick wall. (This post fueled by way too much social media and Cafe Bustelo.)

This book had so much promise and just turned into a suburban melodrama. There was little reality and lots of overblown plot. Like I said it hooked me in the beginning but quickly disappointed. ⭐️⭐️🌛 for trying.

AntoinetteBuchanan I didn‘t enjoy it either. Have read 3 of hers now and they were all underwhelming 6y
TheCuriousHousecat @AntoinetteBuchanan oh in that case I don‘t think I‘ll bother with any more of her books. I need more from a story than what this book has to offer. 6y

I really enjoyed this one! Each character has such an intriguing story that I couldn't help but be drawn in. The twist at the end...All I can say is that I did not see it coming. Not a complete mind bender but still a satisfying conclusion to the book.

#IDoIDoIDoIDoIDo think this reads very Liane Moriarty-esq. I needed a simple palate cleanser and this is just that.

Cinfhen Nice photo 🌸🌷🌺didn‘t love this book, I know I read it but I don‘t remember it at all😞 (edited) 6y
JennyM @Cinfhen it‘s not overly memorable, and I‘m sure I‘ll have no clue in a month what it was about. However, right now, it is easy reading for my tired little brain 😊 6y

I absolutely loved this book!! It‘s #BigLittleLies without the murder mystery. The main plot didn‘t go where I thought it would, but it was pleasantly surprising, in that it wasn‘t totally out of left field. These women really had a lot of drama going on in their lives. I will definitely be reading (or listening) to more Sally Hepworth!!

Bailedbailed

Soooo boring! I just couldn't continue reading this anymore. I bailed at page 120. Waiting for the suspense that never came.

❔ How many pages will you read before you decided to bail a book?

Swe_Eva I don't have a specific number of pages, but when I feel it's a chore to pick up and continue a book, it gets booted. There are too many books in the world that I DO want to read to spend time on ones that don't give me anything back. 7y
thereadingowlvina @LT_eva Thanks for sharing! Yes, you're right. There are too many books in this world and I sure do not want to waste time on those that aren't good 😁 7y
ReadZenRites I have a family friend who says I should give a book 50 pages before bailing. If it‘s really bad that‘s more than enough.🙄 7y
See All 6 Comments
ItsAnotherJen Its soo hard to give up! But it is such a relief when you do. Reading isn't supposed to be a chore, its supposed to be something you enjoy. When I start to forget that I know I'm wasting time on the wrong books. 7y
thereadingowlvina @ReadZenRites 50 pages is fair enough especially when it comes to suspense/ thriller. Things should get intense by then 😅 7y
thereadingowlvina @JenFowler Yes, you're right! I used to finish books that I don't like. But I felt so crappy after that. Wasted so much on lousy books. I had to force myself to quit books that are wasting my time 😐 7y

This was a 4⭐ popular fiction read for me! I wasn't crazy about the writing in the beginning but then the plot developed and it got stronger. I really liked how the author wrote realistically about motherhood/parenthood and its all-consuming demands. She had me imagining the worst about everyone at various intervals and I enjoyed all the twists! A fast, enjoyable and relaxing book.

RadicalReader @MommyWantsToReadHerBook what book are you most looking forward to reading this year? 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @RadicalReader I'll probably put The Heart's Invisible Furies on my birthday list after everything I've read on Litsy about it! But there are so many others I'm dying to read too, like Idaho, Tangerine, The Great Alone... 6y
RadicalReader @MommyWantsToReadHerBook the great alone from just the title sounds absolutely wonderful 6y

Poor Mr Biswas is falling apart and first needs to be glued, and I'm about 70% done with Kristin Lavransdatter and was feeling pretty motivated to finish, but then I distracted myself with Kindle books on sale... At first I was a bit critical of the same-ey-ness of popular fiction and didn't feel the writing was great, but now I've come to appreciate her realistic take on motherhood, plus I'm really into the intrigue!

I really enjoyed this book and read it in just a few days! The story had me hooked from the very first chapter. I enjoyed reading from each characters perspective, as they each had an important role to play within the story. It was very easy to follow along with each character which I thought allowed the story to progress nicely. Thank you again @stmartinspress @sallyhepworth @netgalley for this digital copy.

This keeps you guessing about who is telling the truth.
Things are not as pleasant as outward impressions would have you believe on Pleasant Court. All of the women are keeping secrets & when a single woman moves in to this family neighborhood everyone wonders why. When Essie becomes obsessed with the new neighbor everything begins to unravel.

Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for providing an ARC for my honest review.

A well written, character driven, suburban drama and mystery. How well do any of us know our neighbors? What goes on behind closed doors? You are invited to spend some time in Pleasant Court and get to know a cul-de-sac full of neighbors who are trying to hide a variety of secrets and imperfections from each other. The storyline was filled with secrets and lies, choices and consequences, second chances and new beginnings. Well done!

At the beginning it seems like a soap opera, but don't be fooled. It is wonderful and heartwarming.

The ending is a marvelous revelation of a lot of secrets and a lot of love.
