We Eat Our Own | Kea Wilson

An ambitious debut novel by an original young writer, We Eat Our Own blurs the lines between life and art with the story of a film directors unthinkable experiment in the Amazon. When a nameless, struggling actor in 1970s New York gets the call that an enigmatic director wants him for an art film set in the Amazon, he doesnt hesitate: he flies to Colombia, no questions asked. He quickly realizes hes made a mistake. Hes replacing another actor who quit after seeing the scripta script the director now claims doesnt exist. The movie is over budget. The production team seems headed for a breakdown. The air is so wet that the celluloid film disintegrates. But what the actor doesnt realize is that the greatest threat might be the town itself, and the mysterious shadow economy that powers this remote jungle outpost. Entrepreneurial Americans, international drug traffickers, and M-19 guerillas are all fighting for Colombias futureand the groups arent as distinct as you might think. The actor thought this would be a role that would change his life. Now hes worried if hell survive it. Inspired by a true story from the annals of 1970s Italian horror film, and told in dazzlingly precise prose, We Eat Our Own is a resounding literary debut, a thrilling journey behind the scenes of a shocking film and a thoughtful commentary on violence and its repercussions.

A suspenseful, fictional account of the behind the scenes operations behind the 70's notorious horror film, Cannibal Holocaust. An unknown actor signs on to the film but quickly realizes things are going off the rails as the power-hungry director, the indigenous tribes, and unsavory characters are bringing some real life horror to the production. Based on a real-life court case and scandal, the film was banned in many countries.

A fascinating, lyrical exploration of violence, depravity, and our penchant for it — both as artists and consumers. As a former filmmaker, I also appreciate the parallels to the film, Cannibal Holocaust, which is understandably divisive.

Our commute read! At our next book club, we‘ll be joined by author Kea Wilson! If you‘ve read this debut novel, what questions would you ask the author? I want to know about the inspiration to write Andres‘s story (and all that goes with it), and to hear more about her decision to use POV shifts as well as second person narration.

BookishTrish I really liked this one. The second person narration was well done. I‘d like to know what the author‘s favourite animal is. 6y

I tried. I really did. I thought the scary movie lover in me would be all over this. But 100 pages later and I just can‘t get into the writing. It‘s not so much the lack of quotations but just general voice. Sometimes we just have to move on 👍🏻

#WelcometotheJungle This book is an homage to the 70‘s movie Cannibal Corpse and takes place in the Amazon jungles of Columbia. Not only is it told from the points of view from the eccentric Italian director and his crew but you also have an American expat who is a middleman for a cartel, and points of view from rebels of the Colombian government. All of them are dysfunctional, which makes for a very suspenseful and interesting read.#rocktober

audiobook
DNF. it has a very weird timeline setup that was too hard to follow as I was listening at work, and honestly I doubt I'll try to go back and read or listen to it again later. Apparently a fictionalized account of the film Cannibal Holocaust. I will say though, it is beautifully written.

The premise of this sounded awesome to me: 70s horror movie filmed in the jungles of Colombia, while the area is under turmoil from guerillas and drug traffickers. I expected more horror. I think my horror/twisted meter has become a bit skewed, especially because of my current reads. The story has suspenseful moments. I think the only reason I didn't bail was I really wanted to know what happened at the end & that was a bit anticlimactic for me.

respekt1111 How is Ghostland? I've read mixed reviews. 8y
Books_Wine_Repeat To be honest, I only read 45% then my library copy expired. It's on hold again. I like it, it debunks a lot of so-called haunted houses and ghost stories. It gives a lot of background info and history. @respekt1111 (edited) 8y

Twisted-- the best word I can use to describe this book. The plots are intertwined around each other and the prose is sharp and crisp. Wilson's debut drags the reader into scenes that they don't really want to see, but that's kind of the point.

Set in the 1970s in Columbia, this book follows a movie crew shooting a horror/exploitation film (TW) and a parallel plot about rebels and drug cartels. Deep rumination on violence. Disturbing read.

Books_Wine_Repeat You had me at twisted. 😁👍 8y
rachelm @Books_Wine_Repeat I'm not a horror fan, but man this book made me shivery. 8y
Marchpane Would you say this is a "horror" book? Need a good one for a challenge. 8y
rachelm @Marchpane not in the traditional sense. If you love horror, you might want to keep looking. If you want something with a loose interpretation (kind of about horror), then then this is great! 8y

An Italian director takes a crew to the middle of nowhere in a Columbian amazon rainforest to shoot an exploitative, cannibalism, horror movie. It's the 70's, so add in the rise of guerillas, the M-19's, the cartel, and a go between American. What these two sentences don't tell you is the amount of perfect dysfunction written into each character. What a great surprise this book turned out to be. This author is so good, so smart. Great read.

I feel like this could have been a really great book, but in the end it seemed to take the easy way out. I loved the way the story was written and there was a lot of tense build up to *something* happening, but I don't think it delivered. It's a solid debut though, and I'd definitely read more of Wilson's work.

quote
Heather_Reads
We Eat Our Own | Kea Wilson

"The floor is coated with sawdust and smells like livestock, which is probably what the bus is used for in the off-season when they don't need river shuttles. The crew runs like livestock, and that's what Ugo's been looking for: the feeling of being in front of a stampede, the hoofbeats of the herd coming up through the ground.
He needs to decide how to kill the American."

This book is a mess, + not in a good way. It's based on the controversy behind the '70s exploitation movie Cannibal Holocaust (which is actually super interesting), but unfortunately it's muddied up with several alternating narrative perspectives + weak subplots, when the better choice would have been to focus on stronger development of a couple of the main characters. Also worth noting: I was hoping for more cannibalism. (Don't quote me on that.)

mauveandrosysky Also: I always feel TERRIBLE posting a bad review when it's a debut author. 😔 8y

Wilson plays with the reader's expectations by juxtaposing violence as entertainment with realistic violence. Sounds pretty cool, right? The problem is that this book is a little too artsy. Alternating POVs shifting from third to second person makes it difficult to connect with characters and story.
