Orphans of the Carnival
Orphans of the Carnival | Carol Birch
31 posts | 20 read | 45 to read
A life in the spotlight will keep anyone hidden Julia Pastrana is the singing and dancing marvel from Mexico, heralded on tours across nineteenth-century Europe as much for her talent as for her rather unusual appearance. Yet few can see past the thick hair that covers her: she is both the fascinating toast of a Governor's ball and the shunned, revolting, unnatural beast, to be hidden from children and pregnant women. But what is her wonderful and terrible link to Rose, collector of lost treasures in an attic room in modern-day south London? In this haunting tale of identity, love and independence, these two lives will connect in unforgettable ways.

The only #carnival book in my goodreads, but . . .

As I think about it 🤔 I recall an excellent carnival-themed book GEEK LOVE! Which is a super good read and I recommend it. #Scarathlon #PhotoChallenge

I am considering moving away from IG and posting my pie pics here instead. #CaresPieShow is MY hashtag. #CranberryPearPie #BakedToday

Started this Audio book today not realizing it‘s about Julia Pastrana, which is very fitting as I just finished a scientific book about early artistic life in vienna with an extra chapter on her life. Fate was extra tough on her and I was shocked to read that it took until 2013 for her to have a proper funeral - as when she died 150 years ago her husband had her stuffed to exhibit her. I‘m curious to see where the story in this book is heading!

Urgh, Audio book prizes are rediculous. Looks like I will have to invest into Audible. Now that I am working more hours (and am planning on working fulltime next year) I have so much time in my car that feels wasted. I will miss my train reading so much, but there is no way of taking a public transport to work so audiobooks will help me to use my time a bit better....

TheRiehlDeal I know, right?! Don't understand why audiobooks in CD format are so expensive. Good thing there's Audible. 5y
Cinfhen I‘ve been SO HAPPY with Audible and they are always running specials so the books are pretty reasonably priced 5y
ju.ca.no @TheRiehlDeal I found one(!) for a book I have at home which was 90€! The book was 10. how does that make sense? Looks as if they only make the prizes so high so that people join audible. (If this is the case: it works😅😂) 5y
ju.ca.no @Cinfhen that‘s good to know!🤩 5y

#TBRtemptation post 1! The strange and thrilling world of Victorian carnivals is explored in this story about Julia Pastrana, the signing and dancing marvel of Mexico. On tours across 19th-Century Europe, she'll be the toast of balls and shunned as an unnatural beast. She has a link to Rose, a collector of lost treasures in modern-day London. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

ju.ca.no Great cover! I have this one at home waiting for me to find time to get to it, but this cover looks prettier than the one I have😍 7y

Very strange and wonderfully sad story! Recommend when you are in the mood for something different.

RebelReader The publisher's sales rep has been promoting this one throughout the Midwest and 25% of the sales for this book are in the Midwest. He was crazy about this book. (I saw him at an independent bookstore in St. Paul, Mn). It's still on my #TBR. 7y

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I had hoped. It was repetitive for the most part. The last 50 pages or so seemed forced to tie up the story. Although I plowed through it to the end, and really didn't enjoy it, this book will stay with me for a while.

Just started this. So far so good.

bookjam Not staying quite as good. I will finish it. I have a hard time putting a book down even if I'm not really into it. 7y

I was really disappointed in this book. The blurb sounded like an amazing story of Julia Pastrana but the book fell short. Every time I thought we were moving past "OMG her face is so horrible," it went right back to it. The more modern parts seemed forced and unnecessary, like an after-thought to the book just to lengthen the story. 1/5

*Review based on an ARC/uncorrected proof.

The Harry Potter life includes unique bookmarks sometimes 😂 (Don't worry - it's clean. I just forgot to snag a bookmark before I went to a pool party yesterday and found this buried in my bag.)

I thought this would be vastly different to how it is... I'm not entirely sure I'm enjoying it. The present day section seems very obvious or else totally unnecessary :/

bookjam Still early in the book for me. I'm not sure about it yet. 7y

Julia Pastrana was an intelligent and talented person, considered to be a freak because of her appearance, and exploited by circus managers and eventually her husband. Orphans of the Carnival is a fictional account of her life. The writing was not good, and the story just didn't accomplish what it could have. I found the Wikipedia article on her to be far more interesting and informative. ⭐️⭐️

Friday night reading... #lovethiscover

vivastory This sounds great. I loved "Jamrach's Menagerie" 7y
SharonGoforth @vivastory I loved Jamrach's Menagerie, too. This book hasn't grabbed me yet, but I'm only 66 pages in. What's fascinating is that it's based on a real person (Julia Pastrana). 7y
bookjam Didn't know that interesting. 7y
SharonGoforth @bookjam I thought it was, too. Unfortunately, I don't think the book did her any favors. 7y

59 ~ Orphans of the Carnival by Carol Birch (Kindle edition📱) ~ Started: 05.06.17 ~ Finished: 11.06.17
Rating: 4/5📚

I enjoyed 'Orphans of the Carnival', I thought Julia was a intelligent & strong character, I also felt sympathy towards Julia, due to her husband and his selfish ways.

A interesting story.

Highly recommended.

It felt like this was more a story of I-cannot-stress-enough for most of the book in regard to Julia. Being reminded constantly of her appearance took away from the story. Rose's storyline was unnecessary to me and also detracted from the story. It had great potential, but the execution of this story was all wrong.
I was surprised to find that the characters and main plot points were all real (sans Rose).

Julia stood apart from the other carnival acts. She was fluent in English, French, and Spanish, an accomplished musician with an exquisite singing voice, and equally at easy riding horseback and turning pirouettes–but all anyone noticed was her utterly unusual face.

Last night was publisher rep night for booksellers in the Minnesota metro! We have these events where publishers pitch upcoming books to us, so we're in the know, and we get in on some glorious ARC action. It's as much fun as it sounds. Here's what I took home, in order of most to least excited about from top to bottom. In a few days I'll feature some from local Minnesota publishers that I'm hyped about!
