The Moosewood Cookbook
The Moosewood Cookbook: 40th Anniversary Edition | Mollie Katzen
12 posts | 16 read | 8 to read
Since the original publication of the MOOSEWOOD COOKBOOK in 1977, author Mollie Katzen has been leading the revolution in American eating habits. MOOSEWOOD was listed by the New York Times as one of the top ten best-selling cookbooks of all time, and no wonder. With her sophisticated, easy-to-prepare vegetarian recipes, charming drawings, and hand lettering, Mollie introduced millions to a more healthful, natural way of cooking. This new edition--a companion volume to her latest TV series--preserves the major revisions and additions that Mollie made in 1992, accented with new recipes from Mollies current repertoire and 16 pages of beautiful full-color food photography. Youve seen MOOSEWOOD before, but youve never seen it quite like this!

So yeah, I have A LOT of cookbooks and I have most of the Moosewood cookbooks in my collection so I guess you could say I like to get #DownInTheWoods (or rather down in the Moosewoods) in my kitchen.😆These cookbooks, the classics & the newer books, have taught me a lot about meat-free, vegetarian cooking over the years.🥄📚💚😋

Lcsmcat We got the center one as a wedding present. 5y
Blaire I have two of these and I think my in-laws have at least 5. 5y
Leftcoastzen Love Moosewood! 5y

Persephone has only sustain for vegetarian cookbooks.
I, however, am super excited. This is the 1977 edition, in great shape. And I got it for 25 cents! #kittenlitten

TricksyTails That isn't Harpy in the background, is it? It looks like you have another judge-y 😹! 6y
MaleficentBookDragon @TricksyTails That‘s Persephone. She always looks disappointed in me. 6y

This is an newer edition of the cookbook I learned to cook vegetarian meals from. Today cracked it open after many, many years and made falafel (first time; only have had it in restaurants) with my daughter. She's leaving for 2nd year of college soon, with on-campus apartment, and wanted more kitchen time before going back.

The best falafel we've ever had, even though it was a lot of work!

Lcsmcat We got this as a wedding present 33 years ago! 7y
LauraJ This was my first cookbook! 7y

mjdowens Falafel is the best. I need to learn to make it. I could eat it every day. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Lcsmcat 😊 That's about the same time I got a copy of this. Then someone gave me the 15th anniversary edition (shown) and I just found out the 40th anniversary edition came out recently 😱!! I'll have to look at it to compare. I wish now I had kept my first copy. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LauraJ that's cool🙂. This was my first vegetarian cookbook, along with The Enchanted Broccoli Forest 🌳🌳🌳 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Basia I'm not sure it offers the easiest/fastest cooking out there, but it's a classic for a good reason (tasty food). 7y
ValerieAndBooks @mjdowens yes, do it 😊. So much better than any I've had, even at restaurants specializing in this kind of regional menu. There's also very similar recipes online to this one. 7y
ferskner That cookbook holds up surprisingly well, considering how much the food publishing world has changed since it came out. I LOVE the gado gado recipe! 7y
Booksnchill @Lcsmcat I received this as a wedding gift 32 years ago- love the stuffed acorn squash for Thanksgiving! 7y
LauraBeth I was just thinking about this cookbook the other day! 7y
Lmstraubie Mmmmmm...falafel!!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @ferskner you're right. Right now the only other cookbook I can think of with this type of success (although I'm guessing larger because it's more mainstream) is The Joy of Cooking. I've never tried the gado gado recipe; I should because it does look good!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Booksnchill @Lcsmcat I used to make that stuffed squash every Thanksgiving!! Then somehow that fell by the wayside. Probably after kids and they wanted turkey. Maybe this year I'll do this recipe again 😊!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LauraBeth if you're planning to make something from it soon, let me know what it is 😊! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Lmstraubie it was so good that we (daughter and I; the only ones home for dinner) ate it with just tahini-lemon sauce, nothing else needed 😊👍! 7y
Booksnchill @ValerieAndBooks you have inspired me to pull it out this weekend and try something from the past! Thanks for this fun trip into the 80's! 7y
Izai.Amorim Falafel 🥙 😋😋love it 7y
heikemarie It's so funny I didn't even know this was a thing until after I had graduated college and realized the Moosewood restaurant where I had enjoyed many a good meal was well known for their cookbook! So cool. (edited) 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Izai.Amorim I'm definitely making falafel again! Do you make your own? 7y
ValerieAndBooks @inwhichHeikereadsharder how cool you've gotten to eat at Moosewood. Was it usually very busy? I've always thought if we ever found ourselves visiting the area, that I'd want to stop by! 7y
Izai.Amorim @ValerieAndBooks No, never tried. But I'm a big fan of the Arabic/Israeli falafel. I don't like the Turkish version. I 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Izai.Amorim what's the difference? Also am not sure how "authentic" the Moosewood version is but we enjoyed it nevertheless ? 7y
Izai.Amorim Turks add a lot of garlic. And they serve with different vegetables and another kind of bread. Not the real thing. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Izai.Amorim thanks for that information 😊 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I 💚Moosewood! My cookbook has been stained, gotten wet, and produced some yummy stuff since 1982. I'm old! 😜 7y
heikemarie @ValerieAndBooks it can get busy but not usually too awful! They do take reservations which we always did on weekends and when parents were in town :) ithaca is a great little city and their used bookstore downtown is awesome! 7y

My second recipe from this book. Mushroom and Broccoli Casserole. I added tuna because I've had this weird craving for tuna lately. Stay tuned for the taste test. #cookbooklove

Two more #classic #bookswithpictures from my shelves. On the left, one of the cookbooks I bought when I graduated college in 1985 (were you born yet?). On the right, a book I bought 20 years ago when I first started gardening and growing herbs. Both have lovely drawings and it was so hard to choose! #seasonsreadings2016

melbeautyandbooks Yes I was born and then some! 😂 7y

josie281 THIS IS MY FAVORITE COOKBOOK OF ALL TIME!! Yes, I was yelling! My auntie bought me my copy. I have the dessert edition as well but it isn't the same as the original with hand written recipes and art! Love love ❤️ 7y
TNbooklover66 I graduate from HS in 1984 so yes definitely I was born 😂. Love that cookbook. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @josie281 Ooh I'd love the dessert edition too. There are certain recipes in here that have never been topped in all the other cookbooks I've owned. I will always keep it! Glad you love yours too. 😍 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @TNbooklover66 We're just a few years apart! 7y
SharonGoforth I have this cookbook too. I graduated from high school in 1975🎓😊 7y

One of two very favourite cookbooks (the other is Madhur Jaffrey's World of the East Vegetarian Cooking). Moosewood is in pieces but the newer editions have updated recipes so they aren't the same. It doesn't matter that I change the original recipes myself when I cook - case in point, I eliminate all 4 eggs when I make Chilean Squash - but I guess I have an emotional attachment to this tattered physical book. #cookbooklove

Joe_Jones I hate when they update the books and take out my fave recipes to add ones I don't care about. The Joy of Cooking did that too. The new edition is not nearly as good as the older ones. 7y
Lindy @Joe_Jones I know, right? Don't mess with perfection. 7y
RanaElizabeth Moosewood. ❤ 7y

readinginthedark @Joe_Jones When did they do that with The Joy of Cooking? I'm planning to hunt down a copy, and I'd rather have the original recipes. 7y
Joe_Jones @readinginthedark the 75th Anniversary edition made a lot of changes that I don't think we for the best. 7y
readinginthedark @Joe_Jones Good to know, thanks! 7y

My FAVORITE vegetarian cookbook of all time. Great book from a great restaurant in little ol' Ithaca. Any vegetarians or vegans out there on Litsy? Let's geek out about veggie cookbooks together 😋🌱💕

BestOfFates I'm a vegetarian who has never really gotten into vegetarian cookbooks but I will check that one out! 8y
Annl Also a vegetarian but usually get recipes on line, but why not a cookbook! 8y
queerbookreader @BestOfFates I get into cooking ruts reaaally easily. I'll just eat beans and spinach and pasta 24/7 haha. So idk cookbooks really help me branch out and get creative, and they have SO many ideas I wouldn't have thought of otherwise 8y
See All 6 Comments
queerbookreader @Annl That's cool! I tend to only use online for vegan baking recipes, but that's just me. Usually there are too many results for me to sift thru otherwise so I like books because I have 1 or 2 recipes to pick from, not 800000 haha 8y
Matilda Thanks! 8y

It's true. I'm one of *those* people. I compulsively hoard cookbooks. I'm even more of one of *those* people in that I specifically hoard VEGETARIAN cookbooks. If I find one, I will buy it. No questions asked. This photo does not include the three I bought this weekend. 😄🌱 veggie 4 life
