Newtown: An American Tragedy | Matthew Lysiak
11 posts | 10 read | 10 to read
Chronicling the horrific events of December 14, 2012, this first comprehensive account of the Sandy Hook shootings sheds new light on the unstable killer, Adam Lanza, and shows how this American tragedy became a lighting rod for political agendas, much like Columbine 10 years earlier.

Bk3 of July. I read this True Crime NF as an ebook on Scribd. About the Sandy Hook tragedy in 2012, the author(who is a journalist)does well to treat this with the sensitivity it deserves. Told mostly from the children & their families POV it brings them to life with their fave things & dreams of the future while also trying to understand why the perpetrator did what he did. Well told. #BookspinBingo #NonFictionBingo2021 #PennyPerPage #Pageathon

KristenDuck I think I‘d be a hot mess while reading this book 😢 3y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 3y
CarolynM Thinking of you, Liz, and sending love 💕 Hope you're doing as OK as you can right now. 3y
Lizpixie @CarolynM thanks lovely. The funeral was Thursday which was awful. Especially with these lockdown rules, there was only my four siblings & I, my dad and the eldest four grandkids able to be there, so many other family & friends were just devastated. White Lady live streamed it but it‘s not the same. I couldn‘t even sit next to my dad and hold his hand😢 3y
CarolynM I'm sorry, that's so hard😢 I hope it won't be long until your family can be together. 3y

This was a reread for me, on audio this time. It had me feeling #weak. I made the mistake of also watching the documentary midway through and I eventually had to turn it off. It literally made me feel sick. This book is a very comprehensive take on the Sandy Hook massacre. Towards the end, Lysiak also starts a dialogue on the state of mental healthcare in our country, and what effects Lanza‘s autism and SPD had on his mental state. #heatofjuly

LeahBergen Ooph. 🙁 6y
Reviewsbylola I really killed myself with the documentary @LeahBergen It‘s just awful, those poor little children. 6y

Hoped that if I let it marinate a few days, I could write a more impartial review. It didn't work. I'm still heartbroken and infuriated. If Nancy Lanza had her parental rights terminated early in Adam's life, this tragedy could have been avoided. When you know your son has an obsession with death based on years of graphic drawings and writings, an obsession with serial killers to the extent of creating a well researched database of a top 500... 👇

cathysaid entered into a spreadsheet that extends seven feet long and three feet wide when printed, and he plays violent video games for 14 hours everyday, as a mother you don't ignore it. You don't go on spa vacations several times a month, leaving the mentally disturbed child home alone. You don't ignore the fact that he refuses to leave the house and ends up weighing 80 pounds. And you certainly don't BUY HIM GUNS TO FUEL HIS OBSESSION! 6y
Tamra @cathysaid oh wow. Just awful! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I give you props for reading what sounds like a horribly difficult book. Wowza. 6y

cathysaid I was hoping for a bit more insight into the mental health struggles that led to the event but there wasn't much of that. @BarbaraTheBibliophage 6y
Leelee.reads Sounds like the mom had mental health issues, too, right? I mean, to be that disconnected from the reality of your son‘s situation and to supply access to guns? Makes you wonder if I‘m a different household, if things may have gone differently. Sounds like the kid desperately needed intervention, and instead he was ignored. Makes me sad and angry. 6y
cathysaid @Leelee.reads It seems like she was sporadically concerned, but generally lived in denial of the seriousness of the situation. He had issues far beyond Aspergers but that seemed to be her only focus. It's like she gave up. 6y

#FirstSentence of my current read. As the root cause of these tragedies (often mental illness) intrigues me, I am drawn to such books written by reporters. This book is heartbreaking and infuriating...and I'm only halfway through it.

Pictured is the new Sandy Hook Elementary building and the hanging represents the 25 students and teachers that were killed.

Reviewsbylola This book was so good but so difficult to read. 💔 6y
cathysaid @Reviewsbylola I'm just past the chapters describing the carnage in the classrooms 😓 I suspect it will become slightly less heartbreaking and much more infuriating. 6y

#17booklove #nonfictionlove A sampling of the nonfiction books I loved that I also held on to. Some of these have been read multiple times, and are about to fall apart.

bio_chem06 @Reviewsbylola Random fact: Laura Hillenbrand suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome. I just loved her books so much, I went into an Internet spiral about her, haha! 7y
Librariana I really enjoyed Stiff by Mary Roach and am curious to listen to more of her books 😊 7y
Reviewsbylola I love her books. I did not know that fact about her! @bio_chem06 7y

Reviewsbylola Stiff is her best book as far as I'm concerned! @librariana 7y
Cinfhen Nice! I've read some and enjoyed! I REALLY want to read Freakonomics and (edited) 7y
Reviewsbylola Freakonomics is great and I can't say that bough about shelter Skelter. It's been one of my very favorites since I was a teenager. @Cinfhen 7y
bio_chem06 @librariana I personally love all of her books that I've read. I'm currently finishing up Gulp by her and I enjoy it. I thought Grunt was a bit boring though. I'm going to start Spook this week and I will have officially read all her books. @Reviewsbylola Did you like Gulp? I'm enjoying it, but you are right, Stiff is her best. 7y
Librariana @bio_chem06 - Awesome! 😊 I'm interested in reading both Spook and 7y
emilyhaldi How many times have you read Helter Skelter?? 🤔 7y
Reviewsbylola Besides Stiff, I've read Gulp, Spook, and Bonk. I just wasn't wowed by any of them like I was Stiff. I really wanted to love them. @bio_chem06 7y
Reviewsbylola I don't even know. 😂 @emilyhaldi 7y
