#tlt #threelistthursday Thanks @dabbe for the tag!

1) Tagged (my favorite book): Saxon bastard Walter of Gurney trekking to the farthest reaches of the earth during the dark Middle Ages: Cathay (China)

2) Bilbo in The Hobbit

3) and from this month‘s reads, British women Helen and Gwyneira traveling to New Zealand to meet their unknown husbands in the 1800s In the Land of the Long White Cloud

This was fun! Tagging everyone!

dabbe #'s 1 and 2 sound fascinating! On the TBR! I reread THE HOBBIT last year and forgot what an incredible Hero's Quest story it is! #bilboisthebest Thanks for sharing. 💚💙💚 2mo

#wondrouswednesday Thank you @Eggs for the tag!

🍁 1) That my son is thoroughly enjoying the tagged book, a longtime favorite of mine (yes, we are very slowly making our way through it, slowed by school & my Litsy challenges!) 2) That I even have this book, a special inheritance from a grandmother who died when Mom was young

🍁 Two young Brits journey to Cathay (China) in the early 1200s

Wanna play @freeatlast1137 @Butterfinger @Scochrane26 ?

LeahBergen I‘m STILL waiting to come across this book in my “old book shopping” outings. 😆 3y
Texreader @LeahBergen I sure hope you find it someday and you‘re so going to have to let me know when you do! If I ever come across a copy, I‘ll snag it for you! I‘ve found two over the years and bought them both (those are the copies son and I are reading). 3y
LeahBergen It‘s funny because I swear I‘ve come across all his other books in my searches. I know I could probably just order one online but it‘s the hunt that‘s so satisfying, right? 😆 I‘ll definitely let you know when I find one! 3y

Son and I are continuing our Black Rose readathon. We read together on the weekends.

Freespirit Wow how special is that😍 4y
Scochrane26 You all are cute. I‘ve never read a book at the same time as my mom, but we do read some of the same books. 4y

Texreader @Freespirit @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Scochrane26 Thanks y‘all! The praise is on him, that he‘s willing to do it, at 14! And we also take time to color together. And we have great talks. I just feel like a very lucky mom. My mom and I share books too. It‘s so fun to discuss them with her! My daughter is a great reader, too. We tend to have different tastes in literature though, so we‘ve only shared a few books. ❤️ my reading family! 4y

Indulging in this beautiful book today.

Freespirit This one sounds like I should of read it before this! 4y
Texreader @Freespirit It‘s my very fave book and was lucky to “inherit” it. It‘s hard to find but over the years I‘ve found it twice in the “old” books sections at used bookstores. It looks very generic and I fear it‘ll be snatched up to be shelf candy for non-readers. So I still always look for it. 4y

Friar Bacon is about to give the main character instructions for his journey to Cathay (China), including giving him this map, the most accurate in existence at the time. The friar teaches science, even though it is deemed all devilish magic (it is the year 1273), at Oxford but our main character is in thrall to the friar. Soon the adventure begins!!

“The cupboard, solidly built of estrichboard, was packed with books and manuscripts. Walter‘s eyes strayed in that direction, for books were a rare sight even to an Oxford student.”

Can you imagine the thrill of seeing more books in one place than you‘ve ever seen, even at university, because they were so incredibly expensive and rare? Love this.

This novel depicts the horrific “racism” in England after the Norman invasion, & how badly the Normans treated the Saxons. It‘s not something I‘ve ever read except in this book. Here a cruel Norman widow to a dead earl takes her revenge for his death out on the poor Saxon common people. She‘s thrown women & children, after hanging the fathers who‘d hunted on her lands, into a dungeon. 5 days later she feeds the kids foul food from a pig trough. 😡

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Texreader Children suffering is always the hardest for me to deal with. Whether it‘s real life or a fictional story, I‘d pretty much trade a dozen good adults to save one innocent kid. 4y
Texreader @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Yes, I agree. My son and I are reading this book together and it devastated him, too. 4y

Well, heck, I‘m on page 7 and these are the words I don‘t know and can in some cases only guess at (I‘ve found definitions for only 2). Kibed heel, though, I‘ve no idea. I guess in previous reads I just skipped these words. Kudos to my 14 year old son for sticking with it well past 50 pages so far, but then he loves Tolkien so I guess his vivid imagination is taking good care of him.

GingerAntics That is very odd. 4y

I normally don‘t use my fancy bookmarks, saving them as souvenirs from my travels. Who thinks I should use this one for this book set partially at Oxford in 1273?

freeatlast1137 Totally! 4y
rabbitprincess Heck yes! 4y
MsMelissa Definitely! I have tons of leather bookmarks from my travels around England. I use mine all the time though. 4y
LeahBergen Yes, yes! Life is too short...always use the fancy bookmarks! 😆 4y

Son and I visited my parents for a few days and he started reading my mom‘s copy of The Black Rose, my very favorite book ever. So now I‘m diverting from my reading tasks and am now reading The Black Rose, too, yet again. We both have copies I found in bookstores so I can protect the “original” that belonged to my mom‘s mother, my grandmother who passed away when Mom was young. So I am happy to say this book is being passed to a 4th generation.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That‘s so special!💙 4y
LeahBergen Aww, I love that. ❤️ 4y
Texreader @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @leahbergen We did a few hours reading together this afternoon. He‘s loving it and I‘m a happy Mom! It‘s such a good book, I‘m so excited to share it with him. 4y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Texreader Treasure it, that‘s really a gift. I‘d recommend making a little journal entry as you go, for yourself, to remember when he‘s older and too old for reading with mom...and maybe someday, to share with the next generation. Enjoy! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Texreader I don‘t know what made me even think of it, but you‘re welcome, I‘m glad you liked it. 4y

Fun idea and I love learning about my fellow Littens! Tagging some new-to-me Littens hoping to learn more about you. @hhavel @Crazeedi @fangirl.way @Cweeeevs

Kaye Can you tell me more about your favorite book ? I haven‘t heard of it. How did you meet your husband since he‘s from so far away from Texas ? 5y
Texreader @kaye He got a scholarship to attend a public policy seminar in Massachusetts that I was attending for my job with an economics studies non-profit. 1 week with him in Massachusetts convinced us to marry. Now 30 years later apparently we were right. 5y
Texreader @Kaye And the book: ❤️❤️❤️ Adventurous historical fiction shortly after the Normans defeated the Saxons. About the MC‘s travels to an unknown land, Cathay (China). Started my intense love of historical fiction. Book was my grandmother‘s, so can only find it in used bookstores. So worth it. Thanks for asking!! 5y

Best. Book. Ever. I promised if I ever found copies I'd buy them up. It's been years and then this weekend look what I found! In beautiful condition. It is partly romantic; but much more historical action adventure, which is my first love. Found my first copy in my grandmother's book collection, who died when my mom was young. So this book is a connection to an amazing woman I never knew. But this book!!! Movie=meh. Book=❤️. More 👇🏻

Texreader The Black Rose is a 1945 historical novel by Thomas B. Costain. It is a fictional story set in the 13th century about a young Saxon who journeys to the far-away land of Cathay in search of fortune. From Wikipedia 7y
Gezemice Sounds great! I love historical fiction but nowadays they are mostly romance novels... 🙁 So I always like ideas that are not! 7y
Texreader @Gezemice It really bugs me that the paper cover calls it a romantic novel. There is a love story--a nice one that goes well with the overall story. But I've always felt the book was about the amazing journey from England to China and back before Englishmen knew about China. And a story about friendship and class relations (Anglos and Saxons), and riches to rags story. It has everything! 7y
See All 11 Comments
Gezemice @Texreader Sounds great! I think it uses romantic in the sense of historic adventure, not romance. My mother has a series of "the romantic classics" and they are adventure novels. From the twenties! 7y
LeahBergen Now I need to find this! I love that era. 7y
Texreader Costain was Canadian! Wonder if you might have more luck finding his books. 7y
Texreader @Gezemice Well I'll be darned. I learned something new again! Thanks for that explanation. Makes all sorts of sense now. 7y
BarbaraJean This sounds so good! I'll have to keep an eye out for it. @Texreader @Gezemice, I wonder if either of you have heard of the Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett? They follow a fascinating roguish anti-hero through 16th-century Europe, Russia, & the Ottoman Empire. Dunnett can be a bit hard to get into- she packs SO much into her writing- but it's worth it. I cannot recommend the series highly enough! Lymond is one of my favorite characters ever. (edited) 7y
Texreader @BarbaraJean Sounds amazing! I'll have to keep an eye out for this author! Thanks so much!! 7y
LeahBergen Oh! I just saw your comment 👆🏻 Come to think of it, I HAVE seen a lot of his books at book sales. 👍🏼 7y
Texreader @LeahBergen oh so fortunate! I actually have a number of his books. But I've never made it through them. If they didn't grab me as fast as the Black Rose then I bailed. I guess I need to give them a try. Well, do look for this one. It is so good. 7y

This book is probably my favorite of all time. I've read it over and over. It's terrific historical fiction and full of adventure. It is one of the few items I inherited from a grandmother who died before I was born. An oldie but a goodie. When you can find it, buy it.
