For over 60 years, Brendan Gill has been a contented inmate of the singular institution known as "The New Yorker", long known as a home for the unemployables. This delightful tour of New York's most glorious madhouse and its wards and attendants, including William Shawn, Harold Ross, James Thurber, Katherine and E.B. White, John O'Hara, Edmund Wilson, and others, has been updated with a new Introduction detailing the reign of Robert Gottlieb and Tina Brown. 31 illustrations.

Very interesting article in The New Yorker called "Can Reading Make you Happier?" I didn't know Bibliotherapy was a thing, but I'm intrigued.

Cinfhen Oh me too! Will ask my daughter to pick me up a copy! Thanks for posting 😍 7y

Cinfhen She‘s going to flip at the price tag and then charge it to my cc probably buying it from Whole Foods where she‘ll proceed to add another $60 on groceries @emilyhaldi so in this case, I‘m the gem 💎 7y
Cinfhen $9 for a magazine is a bit steep!!! 7y
Josiedlove I love the cover too 7y
Susannah Showing my age a bit,but I remember when The New Yorker was $1.75. 👵🏻 7y
DivineDiana @Cinfhen @Louise Good luck getting your copies! And yes, $9.00 is very steep! But, there are lots of bookish articles in this issue! If only it was still the price @Susannah remembers! 7y
DivineDiana @Josiedlove I know! ❤️ 7y
Cinfhen I used to have a yearly subscription that was$12.95 @Susannah 😜😜😜 7y

Real talk: a new New Yorker arrives weekly. If I had unlimited time, I'd read them all cover to cover. Alas, I usually flip through it, skim quickly, and then fold it open to the article that looks the most interesting. Then it sits just like this on my coffee table for several weeks, sometimes on top of other, similarly folded issues. Sometimes I end up reading the article, sometimes it goes out with recycling. But I still love my subscription.

Kicking back with light reading & dessert tonight. We made chess pie but there was extra mix, so we made individual custard cups with the leftovers. 👀 So tasty. Isn't this week's New Yorker cover awesome?! 😍

Laalaleighh A. My boyfriend looked at our copy of the New Yorker tonight and said "why can't the New Yorker ever explain their covers" I rolled my eyes. 8y
Laalaleighh B. Chess pie is my favorite and most people don't know it even exists! 8y
angrylilasian I've been loving their covers this year. More than usual. 😄 8y

BookishFeminist @Laalaleighh LOL. Definitely deserves an eye roll. Half the fun is figuring them out, too. I adore chess pie. My partner hadn't heard of it either but it's one of my favorites. South = best pies. 8y
BookishFeminist @angrylilasian Same! They've been really great over the past year. 8y
chowmeyow I adore this cover. Spent so long staring at it when my copy came! 8y
Suet624 I had to give up the New Yorker. I never had time for books! 8y
Laalaleighh @BookishFeminist have you ever had egg pie? I feel like that's the true southern oddity- my ggrandmother used to make it and I Loved if but the rest of my fam wasn't too into it. 8y

Still an important article, not just on the 45th President's psyche and habits, but in the behind the scenes of #Ghostwriting. http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/07/25/donald-trumps-ghostwriter-tells-all

I'm a New Yorker obsessive and usually read them cover to cover, but guys: a 6 page article on horse dancing?

LauraBeth I had to learn how to bail on New Yorker articles just like books 😂 8y
Megabooks Seriously, YouTube it. It's quite impressive! 8y

PatriciaU Seems a bit excessive...😂 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😂😂😂 From never having heard of dressage to now associating it with Mitt Romney when I do hear it. Who would have guessed this was a thing, let alone a thing I'd know about. 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @LauraBeth yes! It's a very specific skill, and fights against my completist instincts 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @Riveted_Reader_Melissa what's the Mitt Romney connection? 8y
LibrarianToujours I rode as a kid and I can confirm that dressage is really hard to do well. The amount of training is incredible 🐎😀 8y
LauraBeth I've been reading The New Yorker since 1992. Do you know how many 10+ page articles I've read about the secret life of sponges, bonobos, rappers, the Texas state fair and the Clintons that I have actually retained? Zero 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @LauraBeth I know. I used to tear out ones I liked and put them in a folder. I suspect when I go senile I'll stand on street corners handing them out 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Eamann When he is as running for office a big deal was made about his dressage horse(s) that are top competitors and basically that that was an elitist hobby to have. The things that become news stories in election years ever cease to amaze me.🙄 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @Riveted_Reader_Melissa wow I can't believe I missed that fun fact in 2012! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Eamann yep, it got a lot of press because it was preforming in the Olympics that year too! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Eamann You could probably still google it and get those original stories from 2012 😂😂😂 8y
Audrey Mitt's wife, Ann, is an avid rider and it also helps with her disease (MS?). As for the 2012 olympics, I think Ann (and maybe Mitt) had a share in one of the dressage horses competing in the olympics. No clue whether it won or not. The facts are kind of hazy and I don't care enough to verify my memory. 8y
Suet624 Oh my gosh!! I have a file folder of favorite New Yorker articles too!! The magazine was so guilt producing though. If I read a book I fell behind on the magazines. Those mags reproduce quicker than bunny rabbits!! I had to take a break so I could read books guilt free. 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @Suet624 Litsy is terrible for this - I'm 8 months behind in New Yorkers 8y
Suet624 @Eamann the pressure!! Do you feel it? or is it just me? 8y
Suet624 And i might add that the last article I read in the New Yorker was that dang dressage article. I wondered why I had just spent time reading it but I notice now that I remember a lot of the details. 8y

I love you The New Yorker. Really, I do. But bodies do not do this!! 😂😂

Gleefulreader The more I look at this, the squidgier I feel about it - like looking at someone's double joint, or a contortionist in action. 8y

CoffeeAndABook 😂😂😂 Thank you so much for the wonderful laugh!!! 8y
kgriffith What I love about this is that it's not at all different from how women's bodies in particular are altered for magazines and billboards, except at least it's an illustration and not pretending to be a photo. It reminds me of the buzzfeed piece where a few female staffers posed in comic book superhero poses and were 'shopped to match the illustrations. Definitely recommend watching the videos besides just reading the article! 8y
RobinLynn 😹😹😹 8y
Graciouswarriorprincess I love the New Yorker and get it through Zinio for free because of my library. 8y
84charingcross Thought this myself when I saw this cover. 8y
BookishFeminist @bookfrivolity 😂 it would open up a world of possibilities for comfortable reading positions! 8y
BookishFeminist @CoffeeAndABook Anytime! We love to have our fun on here when we run across ridiculous things in books. :) 8y
BookishFeminist @GlitterFemme Agreed- that is something that drives me nuts about how women are perceived in marketing and magazines. I didn't run across that Buzzfeed article, but I'll have to take a look for it. I love the pieces they do like that. Thanks for the tip! 8y
BookishFeminist @RobinLynn @84charingcross So glad I'm not the only one who got enjoyment out of this 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Graciouswarriorprincess I do too :) I can get it for free through my library's Zinio, too but ran across a really cheap subscription rate for this- $45 for a full year both print/digital with unlimited access to the archives, so I decided to splurge so I could read it in print the week it's out :) such a great magazine! 8y
