A young woman is left in a ghost town somewhere in Siberia at the end of the road of bones where her task is to listen to a short wave radio and write down all that she hears. One night, when Matvei and Dren, the only people she knows are out, she sees a figure in the snow near the playground while hearing a transmission. It‘s a frightful and lonely story full of humanity. Laura Mauro is a severely underrated writer. Please check her out.

JoeMo Great post, and as you know, I completely agree with you about the author! She should be much more known by horror and dark fiction readers. (edited) 2y

This is a truly mesmerizing collection of short stories by Laura Mauro, a writer known for the fantasy and dark fiction genres. Her writing style is descriptive and borderline poetic, and yet there‘s never a wasted word. What is truly impressive is the consistency of the stories in this collection. I don‘t remember there being any filler material. This is perfect for the horror fan who wants more heart and feeling in what they read.

Yuki_Onna That cover! 🤩 #coverlove 2y
Reggie Yes!!! To everything you said. I love the one about the girl with the fish skin disease left alone with the ghosts in the blizzard, the one about the girl who is a werebear or wolf, and the one about the kids losing their innocence as the UK gets nuclear bombed- that one destroyed me. 2y

What a wonderful Christmas Eve I‘m having! @Reggie are these from you? I recognised the cover of Sing Your Sadness Deep as a book we had talked about on Litsy. These all look amazing! I‘m so excited to read them. 2022 is looking like a great reading year 😍

Reggie They are! I‘m glad they got there. Merry Christmas my friend, to you and your family. ❤️ 3y

Centique @Reggie you are an absolute legend. Thank you so much! All my family are so impressed by the fact I have a friend sending me Christmas gifts from So Far Away (it‘s practically interplanetary!) 3y

Best book I‘ve read this year. Laura Mauro has written an extremely, almost unbearably, sad collection of short stories. After one story, I literally set the book down to cry for 5 minutes. And then I laughed because the title should have warned me. Laura writes these characters whose isolation and loneliness are searching, begging for any kind of compassion. Each tale has a touch of fairy tale and/or horror. I would have read full novels of 👇🏼

Reggie each story has she written them longer. All the sad stars. Pick! 3y
Libby1 That cover is spectacular. 🦊 3y
DivineDiana Fabulous cover! Fabulous review! Sometimes a good cry is cathartic. Stacked. 3y

Cinfhen And I LOVE THAT COVER #CoverCrush ♥️ 3y
Cathythoughts What a cover ❤️ great review, and stacked ! 3y
TrishB I love that cover, just don‘t get on with short stories so well! (edited) 3y
britt_brooke Excellent review, @Reggie ! Thanks for the tag, @Cinfhen - #stacked 3y
Megabooks Thanks for the tag @Cinfhen !! Great review @Reggie !! Tbh, the cover freaks me out a bit. 3y
vivastory Well, if it's your favorite of the year I will definitely be reading it! 3y
LeahBergen Great review (and what a cover)! ❤️ 3y
NikkiM5 Sounds awesome, stacked! and that cover is so cool 3y
Tera66 That's when you know you've read something good. When it takes you tears and time to process it, chef's kiss! 3y
Cinfhen I hope you pick it up @britt_brooke !!! Im really intrigued but I don‘t enjoy short stories very often 3y
Reggie @TrishB The author was born and raised in London. I know you don‘t like short stories but I really wish you would read these. A lot of them have to do with the UK. I think you would have a special place in your heart for these stories. 🖤 3y
Reggie @vivastory This is a less severe sibling of North American Lake Monsters by Balingrud. I think you‘d like it. 3y
Reggie @NikkiM5 you‘ll love it. 3y
Reggie @DivineDiana @Tera66 I slept like a baby after all the emotional stuff this book put me through. This book was with me all day today. 3y
Reggie @Libby1 @Cathythoughts @Cinfhen @britt_brooke @Megabooks what‘s funny is that there is not a story with a fox as a major character and nobody wields scissors in here. But the pull you feel from the cover is the same pull you‘ll feel from the writing and the characters. And if you worry about the horror. The level of horror would be dipping your toe in something. Hope ya‘ll enjoy it if you pick it up! 3y
Reggie Sidenote: my greatest fear is harm to children because my parents raised me in Disneyland and I had it pretty good growing up and I just feel every kid should be able to be a kid for as long as they can. But there is a story in here about these siblings and the day they stopped being kids and it DESTROYED me. But she did it in the most creative of ways. Take from this what you will. 3y
Cinfhen Ohhhh, now you REALLY have PEAKED my interest ‼️‼️ 3y
TrishB I am stacking for a think! 3y
Centique Oh I absolutely have to stack this 😍😍😍 3y
Reggie @Centique tell me ya‘ll are freezing while we‘re melting over here. Tell me it‘s been snowing, Paula. Lol. You would like this book. The other day when you posted about people in isolation I thought, oh, she would like this. 3y
Centique @Reggie you poor melting popsicles! No snow for me but they‘re forecasting 112cm in the mountains tomorrow. And we had so much rain that a town in the South Island where my sister lives got cut off from everywhere else. 😬 3y
Centique @Reggie man I‘m just reading that you guys have been hitting 46, 47 degrees Celsius. That is HOT. I‘ve been in 40+ weather in Melbourne before and it was awful. You basically can‘t go outside huh? Hope it starts to get cooler soon! 3y
Reggie @Centique yeah, when I get out of work it‘s dark, and it‘s STILL hot. I hope your sister is ok! 3y
