The Secret Commonwealth
The Secret Commonwealth: The Book of Dust Volume Two | Philip Pullman
It is twenty years since the events of La Belle Sauvage- The Book of Dust Volume One unfolded and saw the baby Lyra Belacqua begin her life-changing journey. It is almost ten years since readers left Lyra and the love of her young life, Will Parry, on a park bench in Oxford's Botanic Gardens at the end of the ground-breaking, bestselling His Dark Materials sequence. Now, in The Secret Commonwealth, we meet Lyra Silvertongue. And she is no longer a child . . . The second volume of Philip Pullman's The Book of Dust sees Lyra, now twenty years old, and her daemon Pantalaimon, forced to navigate their relationship in a way they could never have imagined, and drawn into the complex and dangerous factions of a world that they had no idea existed. Pulled along on his own journey too is Malcolm; once a boy with a boat and a mission to save a baby from the flood, now a man with a strong sense of duty and a desire to do what is right. Theirs is a world at once familiar and extraordinary, and they must travel far beyond the edges of Oxford, across Europe and into Asia, in search for what is lost - a city haunted by daemons, a secret at the heart of a desert, and the mystery of the elusive Dust. The Secret Commonwealth is truly a book for our times; a powerful adventure and a thought-provoking look at what it is to understand yourself, to grow up and make sense of the world around you. This is storytelling at its very best from one of our greatest writers.

I like Pullman. I do. But I was disappointed in this book. “Good” characters all seem to intrinsically like and dislike the same things. It‘s like the author putting his finger on the scale to insure readers think the right way. Also there is a start of a romantic relationship between Lyra, who is 20 and Malcolm, who is 31 and was her teacher. It‘s soo gross. Every time it came up my skin crawled.

Well then Lyra goes east, as does Malcolm. We have as well now rose oil which has interesting properties. But the Isis inspired men from the mountains don‘t like it. As for the Magisterium, there‘s more intrigue going on there. We have breadcrumbs for the third part here. Is it any good though? I read it and enjoyed it, but didn‘t devour it. There‘s detail to get through, I maybe need to look at the other books before some things fall into place.

This fantasy spy thriller #audiobook is a heady ride across the alternate Europe landscape of Pullman‘s imagination, and, in fact, involves the search for Lyra‘s lost imagination. She‘s 20 in this 2nd part of a trilogy & I like seeing the development of her character, hard as it is to also see how she & her daemon have fallen out over the way Lyra has been influenced by philosophies she encountered in books. Cliffhanger ending warning.

Lindy Pullman adds rich layers by including bits of traditional stories. The hazel staff, and the moon mother are two examples that I remember also being in 1mo

Lyra bent over the open vessel and found the concentrated fragrance of every rose that had ever bloomed: a sweetness and power so profound that it moved beyond sweetness altogether and out of the other side of its own complexity into a realm of clear and simple purity and beauty. It was the smell of sunlight itself.

I have mixed feelings. I love Pullman‘s writing, and I‘m confident Book 3 will satisfy all the questions this one leaves hanging. But this book is sad! Lyra and Pan can‘t seem to connect the way they used to, and their strife leads to separate journeys. Their world is also going through political and religious turmoil, and everything is bleak.

You‘ve got a lot to finish in book 3 Mr. Pullman. Please don‘t let me down!

TW in spoiler below!

Soubhiville The next covered comment is definitely a spoiler! But I wanted to give a Trigger Warning because I wouldn‘t have thought that necessary in a PP book. 1mo

It‘s a chilly morning, so we‘re all extra snuggled in with fuzzy blankets.

I feel like it‘s taking forever to read this one! I think it‘s mostly just that life is distracting me right now. At least I get a little reading time before obligations call me in a couple hours.

AmyG They are too cute. Are they actual brothers?💕 (edited) 2mo
Soubhiville @AmyG they are half brothers, same dad, 6 weeks apart in age. We only intended to have one, but once Froedrick came home it was evident he needed a sibling. We had an older diabetic cat at the time, but he wanted nothing to do with a kitten. So we got Igor. 💙 (edited) 2mo

It was with no insignificant trepidation that I ventured forth to meet the adult Lyra. Pullman's writing, as previously, as always, is flawless, having that ineffable quality that draws you in & sweeps you away - his storytelling is just sublime. And it was an utterly delight to be back in that world, with those characters...even if seeing Lyra drinking in a pub with an ex she'd slept with was a little discombobulating! Cont. in comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi But boy is it melancholy! It just left me with a deep sadness and not a good one re: the bench. And a key scene on a train didn't sit entirely comfortably with me. In fact, I had a few small niggles with structure & plot points but the sheer gorgeousness of the delivery compelled me to let them go. Relevant in its subject matter & enthralling in its telling, YA at its finest. 2mo

I‘m enjoying this #chunkster, and the little illustrations at each chapter heading are sweet. Reading this has convinced me to add a reread of His Dark Materials to my TBR for early next year.

I realized yesterday I‘m reading two books at the moment with “Secret” in the title: this and The Secret Wisdom of the Earth. Interesting 🧐 book coincidence.

AmyG How is Igor doing? Been thinking of you. 2mo
Soubhiville @AmyG he‘s still not eating. But he doesn‘t seem to feel too bad, surprisingly. We‘ll go back to the vet for more fluids this afternoon and see what they recommend next. I think it‘ll be a more GI focused blood panel and an ultrasound. I wish we knew what‘s wrong. 2mo
Soubhiville @AmyG oh! I just got a message from Maelstrom (my Mr)- Igor is eating! Yay! On a different note- I sent you a package yesterday. Be on the lookout for it by Friday. 💜 2mo

Chrys My little dog had to have several teeth out this summer and it took a day for her to start eating again, hopefully Igor was just still in recovery and his appetite will pick up now 2mo

I'm torn about how to rate this numerically. I gave the first in the series a 3+. For much of this, second, installment, I might have rated the same. Ultimately, however, I'd rate it a 2+ or 3- because of graphic description of extreme violence, including a sexual assault. This is supposed to be entertainment! Sexual assault is not entertaining. Full stop.

Blissful break with my favourite tasty protein bar which really does have a cake vibe 🍰
Loving this book after having a muted response to La Belle Sauvage (which I may now be able to forgive what I felt in a first and isolated reading was an unacceptable prioritisation of art over morality in the treatment of Alice).
If only it wasn't about to be a new season and event on Fortnite.... My boys are so loud and excited 😱😱

I thought the first book in this new trilogy was *fine,* but this one was MUCH more engaging. Part of it is that Lyra has agency in this one (and a very interesting problem), part of it is that it is engaging with interesting issues and themes, and advancing a thesis in the way La Belle Sauvage didn't, and maybe couldn't. In any case, check this one out if you're into His Dark Materials, or if you're not.

Meep! It's out! It arrived on my Kindle at 3 minutes past midnight and it was a huge effort not to drive straight in. Mainly because it was 3 minutes past midnight on a school night but also because I'd totally misjudged my reading schedule and I'm currently in the middle of a book I don't really want to abandon. So I'll have to wait a little while longer ... but just having it waiting is still exciting enough!
