I started a new series because I could. This has been on my kindle for ages.
Enjoyed this- will read on.

I know this is blasphemous, but I liked the itv series based on this book better. They made plot changes I found more palatable. Plus, Karin Pirie plays such a minor role here you‘d never know that she was the core character for McDermid‘s series. However, I loved book 5 in the series, so I‘ll keep reading in the hopes the subsequent books are more to my taste and that we get more Karin. I love her.

Thank goodness for tv executives, otherwise I might never read any of my books. 😉 Karen Pirie is a rather minor character in this; she doesn‘t even appear until about 45% in. I‘m hoping that is rectified in subsequent installments. McDermid is such a pro though, it was still a good read. And now I have yet another series on the go which is useful for when my brain can‘t handle anything else. #StartASeries

Not bad. I found alot of this point dragged, where I had a hard time picking it up. Finally did, and finished it

I‘m at a ballgame and not likely to finish anything else tonight, so I‘ll do my #AprilWrapup now. I finished eight books and made progress in some others. Tagged book was my favorite of the month, as well as the favorite of the guest panelists at this month‘s Bloody Scotland Book Club, out of three selections.

So finished the #audiobook

I was disappointed that the story was written Frof the suspects' point of view. And that Caren Pirie wasn't a main character. But the story has surprising turns.

I thought this was going to be a cold case detective novel. It wasn‘t. It was very much on the thriller side which are not my jam right now. It was cool. Just not what I was hoping. 🤷🏽‍♀️

An oldie but a goodie, so far...

I‘ve not read this series from McDermid, but I love her other series. So who could resist this offer?

On a freezing Fife morning four drunken students stumble upon the body of a woman in the snow. Rosie has been raped, stabbed and left for dead in an ancient Pictish cemetery. And the only suspects are the four young men now stained with her blood.

Val McDermid is a fantastic crime author. I love how Scottish she makes the story, from the scenery, weather and food, to the people and their words. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.

#booked2019 female detective i had rd bk2 in the DC karen pirie series so went back to bk1 for this challenge altho she has a minor role in what was a page turning thriller. 4 drunk st Andrews students in 1978 find a dying girl in snow strewn hills, they become suspects & 25 yrs later KP is part of a cold case squad that reinvestigate. Look fwd to bk3 as val mcdermid can spin a good tale.

Okay, warum sie mit dem Landrover ungeschoren davon kommen, wird im Laufe der Handlung plausibel erklärt, aber meines Erachtens ist es eben die Häufung des „Davonkommens“, die ins Auge fällt. Leute werden lustig munter verprügelt und gefoltert und die Polizei stellt sich nur hin und macht: „Du, du, du, du, du.“

Wie gesagt, in der Rückschau „passt“ das alles zusammen, insgesamt ist die Geschichte jedoch überkonstruiert.

Wenn jemand ein gutes Buch der Autorin kennt, her mit den Empfehlungen. Ich bin ihr gegenüber nicht grundsätzlich abgeneigt.
Aber dieses hier … Außerdem ist es stellenweise wirklich schlecht übersetzt, weil Redewendungen wörtlich übersetzt werden statt das deutsche Äquivalent zu nehmen.

Was bei der Handlung auch nervt, ist, dass so viele Leute unbehelligt mit Straftaten davonkommen. Der Landrover, die Brüder Brian und Colin, am Ende sogar Alex.

Ich bin froh, dass das #DickeBuecherCamp-Buch endlich zu Ende ist. Ich habe es nur beendet, weil ich dann doch wissen wollte, wer im Ausgangsfall der Mörder ist. Am Ende versteht man, warum die Rückblende ins Jahr 1978 sein muss, aber mich hat sie genervt. Außerdem kommt erst kurz vor Seite 400 Spannung auf. Die Figuren sind so farblos, dass ihre Hintergrundgeschichten nicht zum Weiterlesen animieren, sondern auch nur langweilen. ?

Toll, jetzt, wo ich mich _endlich_ daran gewöhnt habe, dass, obwohl der Prolog etwas anderes verspricht, die Geschichte die Ereignisse um die vier Protagonisten im Jahr 1978 erzählt – jetzt beginnt Teil 2 in der Jetzt-Zeit der Handlung: in 2003. ?

Bei Krimicouch hat es 4,5 Sterne bei Amazon 3,5 und laut Buchtücken wurde Val McDermid für den Thriller „Echo einer Winternacht“ in der Kategorie „Best British Crime Novel“ mit dem „Barry 2004“ ausgezeichnet.

Stellt man mich vor die Wahl, ob gebundene Ausgabe oder Taschenbuch, entscheide ich mich meist für das Taschenbuch, weil das leichter ist. In diesem Fall werde ich aber tatsächlich die gebundene Ausgabe lesen, denn die riecht besser als die Taschenbuchausgabe.

Lacht mich ruhig aus, aber wegen der verschiedenen Formate (Buchhöhe) war ich doch überrascht, dass die Seitenzahl identisch ist.

Mein zweites (na ja, Emma mitgezählt, mein _drittes_) #DickeBuecherCamp-Buch.

Und nein ich versuche _nicht_ auf verschlungenen Wegen den Winter herzulesen.

Dafür durfte ich gerade entdecken, dass ich dieses vom #MannMeinesVertrauens _von_meinem_SuB_bei_ihm_ mitgebrachte Buch (gebundene Ausgabe) auf _meinem_SuB_ als Taschenbuch liegen habe. Vom Bücherschrank mitgenommen. ?

Wahrscheinlich hatte ich die gebundene Ausgabe zuerst …

Very well structured and the setting is nicely done. I also enjoyed the musical references (particularly to The Clash and The Jam). This was a re-read and I had completely forgotten how it turned out!

I thought this book was going to be a straight forward police procedural with lots of heart pounding action. It was actually a lot more character study as we look at how the discovery of a raped and murdered young woman affects everyone involved then and 25 years later. It reminded me a lot of Tana French's novels. But ignore the fact that this is #1 in a series; the supposed investigator barely has any scenes 😂

Vor inzwischen 4 Wochen oder so hab ich mal wieder eine kleine Runde zum öffentlichen Bücherschrank gedreht. 2-3 Bücher habe ich dort eingestellt, aber an dem hier konnte ich irgendwie nicht vorbeigehen. Hauptsächlich, weil ich den Autor vom Namen her kannte, aber noch nichts von ihm gelesen hatte.
Das wollte ich ändern. Entsprechend überrascht war ich dann zu Hause als ich feststellte, dass der Autor eine Autorin ist. ??‍♀️ *schäm* ??‍♀️

This one is labelled Karen Pirie #1 though said KP doesn't play much of a part in proceedings tbh. Anyhow - Val Mac is one of life's few certainties and this one doesn't disappoint. Superior crime novel with well-drawn characters and really excellent description of time and place. Kept me guessing till nearly the end.
