Logical Family: A Memoir | Armistead Maupin
post image

Goal met, #100 for the year! I went with the audiobook since time is short. Turned out to be an excellent choice. Narrated by the author. He is pleasant and affirming with his mild Southern drawl - just as his books have always struck me. Highly recommend to any Tales of the City fans. 5 ⭐

Finished the year with 26 History, 15 Lit/Fiction, 20 Sci-Fi/Fantasy, & a mix of Science, Bio, Mystery, YA, Travel and other genres. Happy New Year everyone!

stevesbookstuf1 Just a note - we are back in Australia for a lengthy stay with family, so I lost a day for my goal! For you all back in the US, the date and time on the phone in my picture is correct. As my husband's best friend in Chicago likes to say - we are “in the future“! 1mo

22 #100 A short story by Kate Quinn. Everything she writes is good.

VALIS | Philip K. Dick

This is very painful for me to admit but have to be truthful: I love Philip K. Dick, he is one of my favorite authors but this book was too much for me. As much as I tried, I couldn't get it all. There are tons of great ideas that I liked but I found out lots of it went over my head and I just couldn't focus. I felt it is better to stop reading half way through than to just skim and finish it without doing it justice. Still a pick, even if DNF!

claudiuo @PuddleJumper This was my #100 picked up so many times, in April, August, October, also my November substitution.
(edited) 3mo
claudiuo @TheAromaOfBooks my June #BookSpin, sadly my first DNF spin. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks I have only read Man in the High Castle, and my husband actually really likes the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I keep meaning to check out more of his writing, but I may give this one a pass 😂 3mo

claudiuo @TheAromaofBooks Do Androids Dream... is one of the books I would take with me on the island 😁 Thanks for mentioning Man in the High Castle, it is on my TBR shelf for so long, it is time to get to it. (edited) 3mo
TheAromaofBooks I had mixed feelings about Castle. There isn't a lot of action, so it's more of a thoughtful kind of book. I don't know whether or not this was Dick's point, but I took away from it how the winners always write history, and those winners also write the alternate history - they tell us what WOULD have happened if they hadn't won (and it would have been BAD). But the question is... how much would really be different if the losers had won? ⬇ 3mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) So I enjoyed the thinking aspect of the book, but the story itself didn't do much for me haha 3mo
PuddleJumper That's a shame! 3mo
Bookwomble The Man in the High Castle is one of my favourite PKDs. There's lots of ideas about reality and unreality, intrinsic and extrinsic value. Famously, when he got to a decision point in his writing of this book, he used the I Ching oracle as a prompt, which explains it's unconventional structure. I do like VALIS, but it is a difficult book. There's a fair bit of autobiography in it, so knowing something of PKDs life and associates can help 🙂 3mo
claudiuo @Bookwomble Thank for noting The Man in the High Castle as well, I really need to get to it. As for Valis, I knew it has some autobiographical stuff, it is one reason I wanted to read it. And I liked it a lot, I saved quite a few quotes. I stopped reading it cause I felt I am not understanding everything he says and I don't like skipping parts especially from a book I like. It is more like ISCILI (I stopped cause I liked it 😁), not plain DNF. 3mo

Read4life Thank you for posting these amidst your busy schedule. It really is appreciated. 🤓 3mo
PuddleJumper @Read4life Babysitting my six year old niece then taking the rest of the week off to recover 🤣 3mo
claudiuo Thank you so much for posting these, you are awesome! As for books, I've read #25, closest is #30 Thin Air by Richard K. Morgan. Same for #92, I will use the ill-fated #100 which I still haven't read even if it came up 3 times already. Also #63 I read a couple months ago, closest is #59: The Last Librarian by Brandt Legg.
Thanks a lot again and wish you a restful end of the week!
TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! 3mo
PuddleJumper @claudiuo Wow! You are crushing it! 3mo
Clwojick Seriously hoping you‘ll be continuing with this for next year, as I‘ve already started compiling two separate lists for my Chirp audiobook backlog, and my NetGalley backlog. I feel like I‘ll have better luck with the audiobooks, as opposed to doing physical books like I did this year. 3mo
PuddleJumper @Clwojick Yes, I'll be carrying it on 3mo

Here‘s my #BookSpinBingo board for October. #BookSpin is The Year of Lear and #DoubleSpin is the first half of Vanity Fair, which is one of my #Roll100 picks as well. I‘m only doing two #Roll100 for the month since VF is hefty and I already read #100 - the other is Murder Is Bad Manners. Fingers crossed for a good reading October!

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Looks great!!! 4mo

The spooky October dice selected two Ray Bradbury titles for me, so I switched one of them out for a different book 👻. Here‘s what I have to look forward to next month for #roll100:
#100 is The Martian Chronicles
#6 is The Tribes of Palos Verdes (chance of DNF is >50% since I added this as a teenager)
#71 is In Defense of Food

Thanks, as always, @PuddleJumper !

It's a dark and spooky theme for October's #roll100

Roll 1 = 100
Roll 2 = 6
Roll 3 = 71

This is the 3rd time 100 has been rolled! Pick a book below it if you've read it already

Tag me @PuddleJumper so I can see what everyone is reading!

RaeLovesToRead Hehe... Guess who hasn't read number 100 yet 🙈🙈🙈 5mo
SpookyMazeOfBooks Will post my books in a few after I wake up . My mom got called into work last night and it was the shift my sister and I don't like her to work ,the 10 pm to 6 am , 1: because their only allowed to lock one door, 2: because their alone doing that shift , 3: they never fixed the button that sends out a message that the work need help, and 4 their cameras are really bad, so basically they don't have good security at all for their workers 5mo
SpookyMazeOfBooks Which means on nights that she works those shifts I'm up all night .then when she comes home I lay down for awhile 5mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Woohoo! My number 6 is a spooky read! I can use it for a bunch of challenges for #Scarathlon2022! ❤️🎃❤️ 5mo

Ruthiella Clearly the universe wants me to read #100? I‘ve avoided it / failed each time so far! 😂 4mo
Larkken Thanks! You inspired me to buy a set of dice to help me decide what other books to read apart from my roll100, so you know that this challenge really gets me 🥰 (edited) 4mo
PuddleJumper @Larkken Amazing! Welcome to the land of pretty clack clacks 😂 4mo
claudiuo Thank you so much again for the early draw! I am so bad at reading the numbers picked but hope to get better. And I know I keep repeating myself but have to.... gorgeous dice! 4mo
claudiuo @Ruthiella Same here, I kept trying to ignore 100 but someone up (or down) there really wants me to get to it. 4mo
Ruthiella @claudiuo 😂 Will this third time be the charm for either of us? 4mo
Kenyazero Only when your fictional life doesn't depend on you rolling high can you roll 100 so often! 4mo

Whoa. Just noticed that "100 Reviews" badge on my Netgalley profile! Looks like #100 was the tagged book.

Yay, thank you @PuddleJumper for this monthly highlight!

My #roll100 picks for August:
#22 is Girl (likelihood of a DNF is >50% for this one- I added it to my TBR when I was a teenager 😬)
#100 is A Small Place
#17 is The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories (I‘m not big on creepy and weird, but it‘s super short, so we‘ll see)

PuddleJumper Good luck! 6mo

Oh look! A good excuse to continue the Witcher series and start the Shatter Me series 😂 (if my library hold comes in for the second one 😑)

#100 was Slaughterhouse Five. It was awful. 😂 but I have enough books and holds that I don‘t feel the need to find an alternate.

PuddleJumper Ooo looks fun! 6mo
