Vesuvius Club
Vesuvius Club | Mark Gatiss
Meet Lucifer Box: Equal parts James Bond and Sherlock Holmes, with a twist of Monty Python and a dash of Austin Powers, Lucifer has a charming countenance and rapier wit that make him the guest all hostesses must have. And most do. But few of his conquests know that Lucifer is also His Majesty's most daring secret agent, at home in both London's Imperial grandeur and in its underworld of despicable vice. So when Britain's most prominent scientists begin turning up dead, there is only one man his country can turn to for help. Following a dinnertime assassination, Lucifer is dispatched to uncover the whereabouts of missing agent Jocelyn Poop. Along the way he will give art lessons, be attacked by a poisonous centipede, bed a few choice specimens, and travel to Italy on business and pleasure. Aided by his henchwoman Delilah; the beautiful, mysterious, and Dutch Miss Bella Pok; his boss, a dwarf who takes meetings in a lavatory; grizzled vulcanologist Emmanuel Quibble; and the impertinent, delicious, right-hand-boy Charlie Jackpot, Lucifer Box deduces and seduces his way from his elegant townhouse at Number 9 Downing Street (somebody has to live there) to the ruined city of Pompeii, to infiltrate a highly dangerous secret society that may hold the fate of the world in its clawlike grip--the Vesuvius Club.

Nope! This book is too Gatiss for me. Even in translation, it has all the annoying rhythm of a Gatiss teleplay and the historical shortcuts of a tv show. On top of that, the translator converted all Her Majesty's Imperial measurements to metric. In a book taking place in late 19th-c London. Congnitive dissonance does not even begin to explain it. Not for me!

Lcsmcat Anachronisms like that drive me crazy! 6y
tournevis @Lcsmcat It's, unfortunately, a very common translation tactic by French translators. They "nationalize" things. Drives me nuts. 6y

@Bambolina_81 So this is my #tbrbingo. Hope you can read everything. I had a look for English titles so it is easier for you. Only the ones I wrote in German, weren't published in English. 😍😏

Bambolina_81 You have some really great ones on there! I have a few of them also...maybe a buddy read is calling 😉 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 of course. I am waiting for your choice. It's your turn this time. 😍 7y
Sarah83 @Izai.Amorim maybe you can do this challenge with contemporary writers. 😊 7y
See All 33 Comments
Izai.Amorim @Sarah83 I admire a lot this kind of challenges but that's not something for me, I don't like to commit myself ahead of time to read too many books. I prefer to pick the next one after I've finished the last one. "One book leads to another" kind of thing. I can't handle quantity challenges (x books in 2017) either. I don't like the pressure. 7y
Sarah83 @Izai.Amorim Ok. I understand this. 😉 for me it is also hard, because I am doing these challenges for the first time. Never read like this before. I try to pick books, that are for some time on my tbr and that I always get off my mind. Do you have another idea than challenges to face my problem? 7y
Izai.Amorim @Sarah83 Shock treatment: Go to Frankfurt Book Fair, see the 100,000s of books displayed there, realize that no matter how much you read you'll never even scratch the surface of the printing universe, relax, and try to live one book at a time!😃Otherwise you go nuts. That's how I deal with it. 7y
Sarah83 @Izai.Amorim Great idea and really I was several times at the Frankfurt Book Fair. 😊 I really love it there, even it isn't as cozy as the Leipzig Book Fair. Have you also been there? 7y
Izai.Amorim @Sarah83 I'm going this year for the third time. Already bought my trade visitor ticket. If you buy until end of this month it's cheaper. Will be there Wednesday to Friday. Never been to Leipzig Fair. If you're in Frankfurt we could meet for coffee. 7y
Sarah83 @Izai.Amorim I would like to, but how could I get this ticket? I only got visitor tickets for Saturday or Sunday. I don't work for the press, where you get tickets within the week. 😭 I think I was four times there. Have you already discovered the little used book market near the u-tube station? 7y
Izai.Amorim @Sarah83 You register online as a trade visitor and that's it. They ask if you work in the business but they don't check it. Say you're an author, for example. That's how I'm registered. You get a ticket for the whole five days. I paid 88 in July, now it's 103, going up again soon. In my first year I was there on the weekend but almost everyone was already gone. A lot of empty stands. So now I prefer the weekdays. No, never seen this bookstore. 7y
Sarah83 @Izai.Amorim It isn't a bookstore. There are several people like a real market. But maybe it is only on the weekend. 😉 I'll have a look and I have to ask my boss, if I am allowed to travel there. 7y
Izai.Amorim @Sarah83 Well, wish you luck! Now I'm signing off, must go to bed, we're going hiking early tomorrow morning, Brecherspitz, a very nice mountain, a 900m climb. Will post picture! 7y
Sarah83 @Izai.Amorim Good night and good luck. What is your profession besides being a famous author? 😉 7y
WhatDeeReads Your card looks great! Thanks for joining us! 7y
Sarah83 @WhatDeeReads Thank you. 😍 Anything you also want to read? 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 which ones do you also want to read? 7y
WhatDeeReads @sarah83 I hope to finish Shades of Magic, which is called A Darker Shade of Magic soon. I'm choosing to watch Father Brown instead of read it. (edited) 7y
Bambolina_81 @Sarah83 Alice in Wonderland, Sketches by Boz and VE Schwab are all on my extensive TBR 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 so we have another buddy read 😊 7y
Bambolina_81 @Sarah83 it looks like it 😉 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 we don't have to, if you don't want. 😉 7y
Sarah83 @WhatDeeReads I always try to read the book first before I watch the TV series. 😉 7y
Bambolina_81 @Sarah83 I think it sounds like fun! Let me know when you start one of those, I don't mind which and I'll read it with you 😊 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 You are really my reading buddy 😍😍😍 7y
Bambolina_81 @Sarah83 I just saw you have Father Brown too!! I love these! Add them to our buddy list too 😊 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 I will mark them on my tbr. What's your favourite colour? 😍 7y
Bambolina_81 @Sarah83 Blue 😄 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 are you my missing twin? 😊 7y
Izai.Amorim @Sarah83 Sorry for late reply, was offline. I work as a Branding & Communications consultant (I also work once a week as therapeutic coach.) What do you do? 7y
Sarah83 @Izai.Amorim No problem. You told me, that you were going offline. Everything is fine. And what do you do as this consultant? I work as a clerk in a furniture store. 7y
Izai.Amorim @Sarah83 Everything related to building and managing brands. There's the conceptual side (creating brand meaning, identity, value, proposition etc) and the practical side (creating the media needed to communicate like folders and websites). It involves a lot of storytelling and that's what I love about it. 7y
Sarah83 @Izai.Amorim Sounds pretty interesting. 😊 7y

Not only is Lucifer Box the sassiest character in this novel, he is also a dapper gentleman spy.

Mariposa_Bookworm I love Mark Gatiss! He and Stephen Moffatt have ripped my soul out and stomped on it on several occasions. (They both write for Doctor Who and Sherlock.) 7y

#JunesTunz Lucifer Box is definitely the most vain character I've came across, he's brilliant #Youresovain "who is killing Britain's most prominent vulcanologists and...which tie goes best with a white carnation?" Mark Gatiss is a genius ? ❤️

Sarah83 I really don't believe it. Guess which book I ordered on Tuesday? 😉😄 7y

I finished this. I can't say i expected it to be as it was. The mystery was fun, but the entire book just seemed a little too much. This would fit into my #LitsyReadingChallenge2017 #LGBTQRelationship

Putting this book "on hold" for awhile, but not because it's bad. I've just too much on my mind right now. I need something mindless to read. Our 9 year old is having surgery Wednesday, and I find myself becoming distracted. Right now, I need comfort reads. #selfcare #lotsofprayer

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Love Mark Gatiss. I'm back on my book buying ban, but I can't imagine a world where I don't own this at some point. 8y
DeborahSmall @TobeyTheScavengerMonk They are amazing. Lucifer Box was my literary hero for a while. I'm looking for this in a first edition as I love it so much. I think my 2nd and 3rd are firsts. Amazon have them at great prices or I can send you this copy if you're outside the uk. Imagine Mycroft in Sherlock and you have Lucifer Box although more foppish 8y

I was beyond excited to read this — bisexual, 19th-century James Bond written by Mark Gatiss? Is it my birthday already?! Unfortunately marred by transphobia and pervasive nasty punching-down. A shame: There were some delightful moments and tons of potential, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.
