A couple's pleasant little life is upended by the revelation that their son was switched at birth in this gripping psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Before. Pete Riley stays at home; his partner, Maddie, is the breadwinner. He spends his days browsing parenting blogs, where no concern is too trivial, and pacifying their rambunctious son, Theo. Then, one day, a knock at the door. Miles and Lucy, a posh and near-perfect couple, tell Pete something shocking: Theo isn't his son. Their children were switched at the hospital. At first, the couples are determined to reach a mutual agreement. They're all nice, rational people--surely they can sort this out between them. But soon their precarious arrangement--of babysitting, play dates and shared parenthood--begins to erode under the weight of perceived slights, hidden anxieties and petty jealousies. It isn't long before Miles reveals himself to be cold, commanding and aggressive. When he brings a custody case against the Rileys, suddenly their parenting abilities are under suspicion and their private lives become ammunition. That's when their damaging secrets are exposed, their relationship tested to its breaking point. They might teach their son to share and behave, to say "please" and "thank you," but when it comes to protecting their little family, Pete and Maddie are through with playing nice.

I read this in one sitting. Honestly didn‘t think I‘d enjoy a book about a custody battle and there were points where it was frustrating, but this one really drew me in. And I didn‘t see the ending coming, but it was a good one!

Buckle up! You‘re in for the wildest custody battle of your life!

This book had me shaking my head and dropping my jaw numerous times. What happens when an ambitious man tries to take your child from you? Trust me, this book is NOT your typical custody battle

While this had a really intriguing premise dealing with babies switched right after birth there wasn‘t much surprise or twist to it at all. It wasn‘t really even a mystery about what was going on (although I won‘t say what that is in case I give anything away). Two of the parents are horrid and the other two are pretty much doormats, so I really only felt for the kids (although one is pretty rotten). No surprises but not a bad family drama. 🌟🌟🌟

While I felt like Miles character was obvious from the beginning & that Pete was an overly naive man, this book still made me turn the pages. It has the perfect amount of suspense & believability. I really enjoyed the switched at birth plot & seeing the nature vs nurture aspect play out when learning about Theo‘s personality. I would recommend this & any other Delaney book to anyone looking for a suspenseful book that won‘t give you nightmares.

JP Delaney has become an author that I will buy if it‘s there as I know it‘s something I can easily read, and I love the writing style, but not something I would brag about or recommend, I like all the books, but I didn‘t love any.

Well! I loved this book! My sister gave me this one to read, she recommended it highly. 2 babies were born prematurely in private hospitals and transfered to the NHS Nicu. But unbeknown to the families, the babies were switched! You will not see where this one ends. Loved it

New book club pick and what a great choice. Whilst this book had me stressed and frustrated at times the ending was well worth the wait

Overall Rating 4¼⭐ | Narration 😁 = Very Good

While it did delve into the unbelievable, especially towards the end, it was still one helluva ride. What starts out as domestic drama eventually morphs into thrilling suspense. Imagine finding out your two-year-old son is really not your son and he was switched at the hospital after birth...a premature birth at that. Gobsmacked!

A really good psychological thriller! Had me engaged from the beginning. The way the book starts, you almost think you know how it's all going to play out. But this is no Lifetime movie. It gets pretty suspenseful. I liked the mix of characters. Such an array of personalities. #IshouldbecleaningforEaster #couldntstopreadingthis #worthit

11/6/2020 A perfect mess of a story. By this, I mean...the characters are placed in an absolutely terrible situation when they learn that their child is, in fact, not theirs. Consequently, the parents of the switched babies attempt to handle the situation with the best interests of this children in mind. Of course, that doesn‘t happen...

After reading"The Girl Before" I became leery of this author because the book is so bad. However, "Playing Nice" changed my mind for the better! This story brought out so many of my emotions the most prevalent being anger. The things the villain does are just so disturbing and I felt the other characters' sense of powerlessness as a result of his destructive actions. This is a taut family drama that I definitely enjoyed. ❤

Imagine finding out your toddler is not the baby you actually gave birth to.....lucky for you the other family are very understanding and just want what is best for both of the swapped boys... Another fantastic read from J.P Delaney, I have thoroughly enjoyed every book written by this author so far. A great plot, very real characters and unexpected plot twists all combine to make it a thoroughly enjoyable read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I misjudged the amount of time my few errands before work would take, so I‘m parked in the corner at work an hour early, reading until my shift actually starts. (I‘m pretty ready to have my mind blown by this, that‘s become pretty standard with Delaney.) #playingnice #jpdelaney

This was such a good read. It instantly draws you in and you just have to know how it ends. The plot is quite fast moving and the end is very cleverly done. Speaking of the ending wow what a series of twists there was to finish the story. In fact the whole story is twisted. You can never be sure just what will happen next which I loved. The writing is detailed and decriptive. #Netgalley 4*

Whew- what a tense & stomach-churning read! Told mainly from the perspective of Pete & his partner, Maddy, along with some mixed media documents, the book opens when Pete opens the door on two strangers. One of the men looks a lot like Pete‘s two year old son -& it comes to light that the two boys were switched in the hospital. And though things start amiably enough, the tensions, secrets & pasts all combine to make this an enthralling read!

LiteraryinLawrence Sounds really interesting! But maybe I‘ll wait til another time. I‘ve been bailing on certain thrillers that I would normally read because they are adding too much stress for me to handle these days. 4y

This author gets me everytime. The storylines are just crazy mad! The characters are believable and you can't help despising or feeling sorry for them. The book covers some difficult topics, which did make me wince in parts, but it added to the overall effect. Loved it. Can't wait for the next one! Delaney is consistent for me. I wasn't really sure how this story was going to be a mystery, but there was a twist. The last 20 pages felt rushed, but as always, this was a fast, mindless read

There's a new JP Delaney coming out on July 28th! And it's awesome. But you already knew it would be, right? Is anyone else in love with this author?

Maddie and Pete find out the child they've been raising for the last 2 years isn't their biological son. Their son has actually been living with a different family.

Who swapped the babies? Was it an accident? You'll have to read this to find out what happens.
