December #Roll100. I use this challenge to read off my kindle. I am already reading the tagged book and hope to read State of Terror, too. I did not plan the HRC theme 😀

3.75⭐️ I enjoyed it for the most part; was a little too American-centric for my tastes, but these are their choices and I probably would have picked different women. I probably would have included the #personscase from 1929 as well. #nonfiction #history #lgbt #biography #2021 #bookreview #bookstagram #litsyatoz2021 #b #bookspinbingo

This book is a lot of info & really long, but those are good things when highlighting strong women. I read about half of it between yesterday & today because I need to return it to the library. I agree with others that it‘s best when taken slow. Even today, I took a break between sections. So many women I have never heard of are included, a lot of women Hillary & Chelsea have met through politics & charitable work. Very inspiring & feminist.

quote
Scochrane26

“Often, I am made to sound like an attachment to a vacuum: the wife of Martin, then the widow of Martin, all of which I am proud to be. But I was never just a wife, nor a widow. I was always more than a label.” —Coretta Scott King

quote

Reading about inspiring women activists & leaders this morning.
“Courage is more exhilarating than fear and in the long run it is easier. We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time, meeting each thing that comes up, seeing it is not as dreadful as it appeared, discovering we have the strength to stare it down.” —Eleanor Roosevelt

A warning for cat owners—apparently the Book Of Gutsy Women is the perfect book to relax on. My cat has interrupted me from reading it (by sitting on it) almost every time I have it out. He‘s really gotten comfortable today. #catsoflitsy

1. I have too many books going at the same time, which stresses me. I‘m reading the tagged, Walking on Water, and need to finish a Wendell Berry NF Book. I‘m also listening to White Fragility for a book study. Trying to finish the physical books this weekend.
2. Persuasion—Jane Austen
3. The 5th Lady Sherlock

I feel this book is important. Full of pioneering women. I also feel strongly that it should have been about four books that went into deeper detail about the women.

1. Canada 🇨🇦
2. The book of gutsy women, still reading it right now.
3. About 800 pages (I feel accomplished but not like I'm wasting time reading a brick)
4. Go ahead if haven't already.

So good! Filled with the stories of amazing, strong, and influential women, this book is illuminating and empowering. Great to listen to a few chapters at a time; would be great to read with your kids 7+ or up listen on a road trip. Highly recommend!

Lots of short histories of amazing women in the past and present. Some I had heard of before, but not all.

Ooof! Challenged myself to do a 4 mile walk today and phew, I‘m tired! Enjoying listening to this on #audio as I walk. The uplifting stories of women through history are so encouraging!

This was exactly the book I needed right now. Filled with vignettes about women who are/were scientists, politicians, athletes, and more, it is hopeful and inspiring. I‘m going to have to pick up a physical copy to keep so I can go back to it when I‘m needing to feel uplifted.

I am about 1/3 of the way into this on audio and it‘s the perfect read right now! Filled with the stories of women who fought and prevailed against adversity. The first chapter is on Harriet Tubman and ends with a quote from her which I find timely: “Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.” Thank you, Harriet. We need your spirit now.

I really enjoyed this collection of biographies about women from all different walks of life who changed the world in many ways. The stories are highly compelling and serve as a beacon for the change women can make in the world. The insights by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton woven through each story offered an interesting perspective to why the “gutsy women” included in the book should be celebrated and emulated by people everywhere. A great read!

umbrellagirl This sounds excellent! 5y
Come-read-with-me @umbrellagirl It really was a good read. It is extremely well written. I can hardly wait for my nieces get a bit older so I can share the stories with them! 5y

Took a trip to my favorite bookstore @oblongbooks and here was my haul. The top 3 are signed editions. Gutsy Women is signed by both Hillary and Chelsea Clinton. The Gone Dead was a shelf talker recommendation and American Dirt was 3/4ths off because I got a $20 coupon for the hardcover club. Support local bookstores!

NerdyRev The Clintons live in the neighborhood nearby and regularly pop in to sign their books. Nice folks. 5y

Started The Burning Soul this morning, probably last me today and maybe tomorrow. I‘ve just picked another book to keep me ticking over until Wednesday and hopefully Father Christmas will leave me some books 📚📚 then obviously the shiny new ones will appeal first!

Cinfhen I‘m looking forward to shiny new books too!!! 5y
Cathythoughts 👍🏻❤️Christmas books 5y
MicheleinPhilly Completely unrelated to reading but have been thinking of you all weekend as we watched Little Boy Blue Friday night and last night. Sobbed my eyes out. 😭 5y

TrishB @MicheleinPhilly 💔😢 Rhys. I couldn‘t watch it. Living through it in the city was hard enough. I literally cried every time I saw his mum on the telly. So awful. (edited) 5y
MicheleinPhilly It was so horrible and so senseless. 😔 5y
LeahBergen I bet Father Christmas KNOWS he better bring you lots of books. 😉 5y

So close to finished! Snacking on chocolate and wrapping my gifts for my #jolabokaflodswap / new friend.

So many incredible women to research further like Constance Baker Motely, Barbara Mikulski, Geraldine Ferraro, Ann Richards, Bella Abzug, Mary Beard, Claudette Colvin, & Mary Edwards Walker. 💪🏻

Less than 15% in and have already learned so much I didn‘t know (but wish I had!) like:

*Harriet Tubman‘s first “save” was in Troy, NY, not far from where I grew up.

*Helen Keller cofounded the ACLU.

*The first woman to be elected to both chambers of Congress was also the first woman to run for President (and the first/initially only Senator to counter McCarthy) - Margaret Smith. She was a Republican.

I‘m enjoying learning a bit about women I‘ve never heard of. I was happy to see Anne Frank included early on.

Here‘s hoping a gutsy woman runs the US soon.

I was fortunate to hear these two authors speak on Friday night. The essays in this book are phenomenal. I am sad that there are so many gutsy women and all around badasses throughout our history whom I have never heard of, but I‘m happy to be celebrating them today. #sundaymorningread

Speaking of #GutsyWomen ... 💙🙂

Anyone else interested in the tagged book? I've seen them in interviews to promote it, and it really sounds like something I'd want to have in my library for my kids, especially my daughter, to reference.

This is a great compilation of women who were unafraid to speak their mind, no matter the consequences. They are written so young readers can also learn, and read. Good choices, each with their own pic and most with several pages of bios.
#teamslaughter #scarathon @Clwojick

MelissaSue81 I've got this from the library. Do you think its best to read cover to cover? Or more of a flip through and see what looks interesting?
I actually thought it was a kids' book and requested it for my girls but I think its a bit too much for them.
5y
overtheedge @MelissaSue81 Its definitely written for a younger set....teenage. . ..It's probably best to flip through.....its very basic, more to inspire than to give in depth bios!! 5y
