My last book for 2022. All the stars for this graphic novel trilogy of the civil rights movement. Beautiful artwork and such a story. Thanks to Litsy I‘ve delved into graphic novels this year and they have been some of my best reads. Ducks is up next. As a grassroots activist who has worked 30 years on environmental campaigns, the conflicts and hard decisions on political strategies really resonated. Does compromise help or hurt a cause? 🔽

3 of 3. Conclusion was Selma Bridge. Bloody Sunday. Of which I feel I‘ve learned more about here than anywhere else. Now I feel I understand the march. Very informative and historic set told by someone who was there. Who believed so hard in equality he was arrested and beaten almost to death multiple times. This moment here had me in tears after reading John‘s pilgrimage. This was so well written, for anyone to understand.

Hard to read but so important and so well-told and drawn. John Lewis and all the people who helped him in the civil rights movement are heroes.

The tone in march would be angry because in the book it says that “ We‘ve she‘d too much blood we‘ve come too far to back down now “ so we can infer that they worked day and night to get where there at now and get there voices heard and out there what would be the point to waste it all now and the mood I wound say be sad because it‘s really unfair how there getting treated just because of there skin color . @TheMrsShaw

The literally meaning of “ March “ means walk in a military manner with a regular measured tread. but in the book i‘m reading “ March “ means how black native Americans have to fight for there freedom and they come across serious obstacles that they have to face together and they are tired of being treated like a animal so decide to start a march

Reread this one in preparation for Run: Book One. Loved it just as much as the first time. John Lewis was an incredible leader. This was my August #BookSpin pick.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I am consistently blown away that John Lewis& I were alive at the same time, how recent the Civil Rights Movement was. And, frustratingly, how timely so much of this book still feels. This book encompasses the couple of years leading up to Bloody Sunday in Selma, AL, &it was difficult to read & beautifully done. There is so much history here that I didn‘t know, & I am grateful that Rep. Lewis took the time to spell it out for all of us.

I took so many pictures of so many panels with the intent of sharing them with you Littens, but really I just can't recommend March: Book Three enough! I gave it a full, enthusiastic 5 star rating on Goodreads. Please do yourself a favor and pick this one up, you won't regret it! 💌

Honestly, this installment is the most powerful. But I've also had to take a break while reading because it has broken my heart to see how far we still have to go just to recognize that #blacklivesmatter.

"Doctors who evaluated volunteers returning home from Freedom Summer described the symptoms of the emotional and physical toll as 'battle fatigue,' marking 'a crisis in the lives of those youths who experience them.'"

So many people who came before us gave their blood, sweat and tears to be treated equally under the law. In light of the GOPs recent attempts to restrict voting rights, we must remember who exactly they're attempting to disenfranchise. Their 'argument' is steeped in racism and is one activists have been fighting for decades.

Never a more poignant time to read this series. Massive wins in Georgia, as two Democrats win their run-off elections. Meanwhile, white supremacists storm the capitol - encouraged by the words of our current president - in an effort to stage a coup.

Horrifying to see the violent racists in this book & know there‘s not a dime‘s worth of difference b/t them & the violent racists marauding today w/full-throated endorsement of a racist president. This final volume drives home the depths of depravity in which segregationists wallowed, & the bravery & fortitude of the CRM. Bit too long & focused on internal politics. But still brilliant & crucial. & once again: Diane Nash is fucking hardcore 4/5 ⭐️

I feel like these graphic novels need to be required reading. There were so many heartbreaking things about the civil rights movement that I had no idea happened. There is so much work that we still need to do. Enough is enough. We need to do better!

Time to finish up reading this series. It‘s been SO good. Very inspiring and motivating.

I don't have anything particularly eloquent to add to the many eulogies for Rep. John Lewis today, but the March trilogy is easily the best nonfiction I've read this year. It was an honor to read his words. Rest in power, sir.

I was so saddened by the news this morning and knew it was time to revisit this awe-inspiring trilogy.

RIP, good sir.

And thank you.

It was a great reading month, all things considered. Right now, I‘m struggling to get through anything in print. Just can‘t focus. I know I‘m not the only one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The final leg of John Lewis‘s civil rights battle was tumultuous and often violent, yet they admirably continued to protest in peace. What he and other unflinching activists helped achieve was just ... well, there are no words to articulate it properly. This is a difficult, very powerful graphic memoir series. History in this format is just brilliant! #nationalbookaward

I read four books in February (well, technically three books and a magazine). All picks this time. March Book 3 edges out the win for my favorite book of the month - it's an excellent conclusion to the trilogy and just an incredibly well-done comic. But I'd recommend any of the four if they sound good to you. #FebruaryWrapUp #MonthlyWrapUp

These books were hard to read, but are definitely inspiring. I learned quite a bit.

Wow. This whole series is a triumph. It's well written, beautifully illustrated, moving, and personal. We are so fortunate that Representative Lewis shared these memories with the world this way. And especially young people today are fortunate to have these texts about the Civil Rights movement - such a powerful contrast to the dull, anodyne way I remember being taught about it when I was in school.

A stunning conclusion to the March trilogy. This one covers the time period from the Birmingham church bombing to the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

These books are a gift, and I am grateful to John Lewis for sharing his memories and experiences. A difficult read at any time, even more so under the shadow of the Charlottesville Unite the Right White supremacist rally, rollbacks to the 🗳 Rights Act, and the current POTUS.🤮 #nonfiction2020

I've reached the section in the March Trilogy that takes place during the 1964 DNC. I now have a much better understanding of the context of this famous quote from Fannie Lou Hamer that I have seen many times over the years.

Holding this book recommendation in my back pocket the next time I hear another parent complain about kids reading graphic novels instead of “real“ books.

Soaking some sore muscles in an epsom 🧂 🛀 after today‘s difficult 🚲 🏋️‍♀️ !

Barack Obama. John Lewis. I‘m reading March and am now on Book Three. I‘m saddened and feeling shamed by the little progress if any my own nation has made since the racism, hatred, voter suppression, gender inequality, and name-calling of the 1960s. I strongly recommend all three books of this graphic novel series.

Nonfiction. This is a series that I would definitely love to read. It tells of some of the most important events in America‘s recent history as told by a man who was there and saw it all and who was integral in the movement. This book would be perfect for fourth grade up I think and perfect for anyone who likes history but needs the engaging factor of images to help them get hooked. These images will certainly hook any reader.

March: Book Three by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and illustrated by Nate Powell. The third in a nonfiction graphic novel series, this book tells of the lead up and effects of the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. It‘s a powerful telling of the events that pulls you in to 1963 and into the march rather than just telling you about it. It‘s beautiful, it‘s powerful, and it‘s important.

The 1965 voting rights act was signed into law by president Lyndon Johnson.

A graphic novel about the civil rights movement? Very cool. Since this is an important topic I think it is a good idea to have it in a popular format for young readers.

Wrapped up this trilogy today. It‘s such an important read- especially for those of us who grew up learning only about MLK and Rosa Parks when discussing the Civil Rights movement. These books shine a spotlight on so many other remarkable people.

Hard to believe how much this book feels like today, and it‘s pretty sickening.

The best of the trilogy, and that‘s saying something. These are my favorite graphic novels. This really enlivens history. It‘s amazing to me, and heartbreaking and enraging, that all of this happened so recently. I wish these books had been around when I was in high school studying US history.

These books go quickly but linger long after they‘re done.

Another lesson from the past we would do well to learn - for real this time.

Wonder why this stands out to me.

And the reception of this speech was boos, naturally. History repeating itself, maybe?
