Lockdown
Lockdown: the crime thriller that predicted a world in quarantine | Peter May
25 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 12 to read
Written over fifteen years ago, this prescient, suspenseful thriller is set against a backdrop of a capital city in quarantine, and explores human experience in the grip of a killer virus. "They said that twenty-five percent of the population would catch the flu. Between seventy and eight percent of them would die. He had been directly exposed to it, and the odds weren't good." A CITY IN QUARANTINE London, the epicenter of a global pandemic, is a city in lockdown. Violence and civil disorder simmer. Martial law has been imposed. No-one is safe from the deadly virus that has already claimed thousands of victims. Health and emergency services are overwhelmed. A MURDERED CHILD At a building site for a temporary hospital, construction workers find a bag containing the rendered bones of a murdered child. A remorseless killer has been unleashed on the city; his mission is to take all measures necessary to prevent the bones from being identified. A POWERFUL CONSPIRACY D.I. Jack MacNeil, counting down the hours on his final day with the Met, is sent to investigate. His career is in ruins, his marriage over and his own family touched by the virus. Sinister forces are tracking his every move, prepared to kill again to conceal the truth. Which will stop him first - the virus or the killers?

Absolutely loved this book! Set during a bird flu pandemic, this book was deemed too unrealistic and wasnt published at the time. Now during the covid-19 pandemic it has been published and it shows how a lockdown should be. Not only that but the crime story included it really good. Highly recommend. If you think our lockdown sucks, read this book and you'll realise how much worse it could actually get!

Reading in the car while on my break at work. Cant put this book down. This is what you call a lockdown, not the pathetic attempt we're currently in. #Lockdown

Ok so I bought this book during the first lockdown way back in March and put off reading it till all this was over but I'm beginning to lose hope we'll ever be allowed back out so I may aswell just read it and see what else is in store.

Someone just sent me this which feels so appropriate as Toronto (where I live) heads into another lockdown tomorrow.

I cast my vote. I read some chapters. I saw a friend in line. My husband called me a socialist. It‘s all good.

Chrissyreadit Ha! My husband calls me a liberal socialist all the time. He is fairly conservative these days- I tell him I‘m a democratic socialist. We are neighbors too- he works in MD and we live in WV 4y
CBee I am also a member of the “husband calling me a socialist” club 😂 All good with me 😁 4y
Sace @Chrissyreadit @CBee my husband has been a lifelong conservative. He didn't vote in 2016 out of disgust and he's voting blue with me this year. He still leans a little to the right of me, but I can live with it. 😁 4y
CBee @Sace that‘s so awesome 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻 I‘ve been so nervous and just hope things change 😳 4y

My goal for #OutstandingOctober was to finish three of five physical library books.
The Searcher ✅
The Missing Years ✅
All Creatures Great and Small
Watching You ❌
and...
Lockdown ... of which I‘ve read more than half so far

Just two books completed but over 1000 pages read, and I‘m happy with that!

I think I‘m going to pause Lockdown for now and save it to finish next week when I‘m in line for early voting. (No electronic devices allowed.)

Andrew65 That‘s great 👏👏👏🍾🥂🥳 Thanks for playing along. 😊 4y

This is my conversation with one of my favorite authors, Peter May. I got a notification from Fantastic Fiction about a new book coming out in 2021 so I messaged him about this.
Novels
Entry Island (2013)
Runaway (2015)
Coffin Road (2016)
I'll Keep You Safe (2018)
A Silent Death (2020)
Lockdown (2020)
The Night Gate (2021)

Andrew65 Wonder why it is not in the series if he is a lead character. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 He‘s basically using the character possibly because Enzo‘s character is from France and it looks like the book is about WWII 4y
Andrew65 Sure it will be a great read. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Of course! 4y

It's #bloodyscotland weekend. You probably can't see but Peter May and Anne Cleaves are talking. It's too sunny to be inside so I've sacrificed visuals.

Probably because bookworms are usually not looters... We'd rather get locked down in a bookstore ;)

BookwormM Or we are busy using lockdown to tackle our huge unread TBR piles 🤣🤣 4y
catsuit_mango @BookwormM strangely I have some big reader friends who did not manage to read anything during lockdown... 🤔Me? It was exactly as usual 😂 the end of time can wait I have a tbr pile to finish 4y

When one of your favourite author had written in 2005 a book about a pandemic and none had wanted to publish it then... You read it once it gets published in the middle of a pandemic!

Day 31 - #IfYouLikedThis #Contagion

#YoullLikeThisBook - #Lockdown

Peter May is one of my favorite authors. He wrote this book in 2005 set in London, about a global pandemic. It was a city in total lockdown. A virus was claiming thousands of lives. The scenario described wasn‘t drawn from his imagination. It was based on detailed pandemic planning done by both the British and the Americans in the early 2000s. Nobody thought it would come true.

Klou Wow, sounds good. Great choice! Thank you for playing along this month!! 4y

I read this back in June, it was quite gripping. Set in London and a lockdown much more stricted with martial law. A bag of bones is found of child and on his last day of work DI Jack MacNeil must find the killer.
Peter May wrote this about 15yrs ago but his publishers thought it sound unrealistic. Well now
they know! #thrillers

Wow.. What can I say? A great book to read during an actual virus pandemic.
It had me hooked from the start!

My heart breaks for MacNeil for many different reasons. I would definitely love to read a "Lockdown 2" to see how he copes with his life after he contracted the virus himself, and to see how the world reacts to how the virus was created!
This is definitely a book that grabs your attention with all the twists in the plot!

May wrote this book 15 years ago. Publishers said no, this is too unrealistic. London is in lockdown, people are dying to the left and right due to this strange new flu. A murdered child is found. DI MacNeil‘s son has died due to the flu. It‘s his last day at the Met and he‘s decided to solve the case, no matter what. Not my fave May, but still a good read.

EadieB I have this on hold at my library. I watched his Facebook video about this book and found it very interesting. 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB It‘s good, but not as good as his best ones, but they are in my top list of best books. I‘m about to finish McKinty‘s Dead trilogy today. The third book is super! 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I read the first and the other two are in TBR pile. 4y

Tove_Reads @EadieB I‘m trying to figure Out how NetGalley works. I requested books that are not available right now. If they decide to give me one to review will it just magically appear on my own site, or how does it work? 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads They will send you an email and say whether you have been selected to read the book. Then the book will show up on 'Your shelf' at the top of the screen just under the NetGalley page title. You will then click on the book and it will ask you where you want to download the book to. Either Kindle or another program. You need to set up your info about where and what devices you want to download the book to. (edited) 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Thanks! I realized there is a UK and a US site. Will my reviews only be on one of them? 4y
EadieB You will need to go under your Profile under Reading Preference:
Get Ready to Read
Most NetGalley files need to be accessed via a reading app. We recommend Aldiko; Bluefire Reader; or Adobe Digital Editions (all free reading apps). See our device guide.
Many NetGalley titles can also be read on a Kindle or Kindle app. To set up reading on your Kindle, enter your Kindle email address below (required). You‘ll also need to add kindle@netgalley.com
(edited) 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads They will only be on whatever site you put them. I notice on Amazon they have international reviews and then you can also click on US reviews too. 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB I have added the kindle things 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB I just requested a super interesting book on 🇬🇧 site, and I logged in with my 🇺🇸 things. I guess I have to check if my bio and other info is on 🇬🇧 site or not 🤔 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Good luck with that! 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Enjoy! I read that in March. 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB It says ‘hold your coverage until the publication date is listed‘. What does it mean? When do they want it then? 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads On goodreads it said it was published in Feb. Maybe it's the paperback version that will be published in July 2020. Usually I put my reviews on Litsy, LibraryThing, Goodreads, Paperbackswap, then they want you wait until it's published before you do the review on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB I‘m on the waitlist at my library, so it‘s published here as well. I wonder if it‘s an old email message that they forgot to change. 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I don't think so as at the place where you request it the published date is July. 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB It‘s still the same book, so I don‘t get it. Are the reviews on NetGalley only connected to ISNB numbers or something? 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads It is a different cover so maybe that is the reason. 4y

1. I'm from San Juan, Puerto Rico, born & raised here 2. I really liked Three Souls by Janie Chang but I could say that I really enjoyed the majority of the books chosen during the quarantine lockdown period. 3. 300-400 I could say is comfortable but it depends on the book, if the book is interesting, the length is secondary.
4. To those who have not played yet. Thanks @Suet624 🤗

Suet624 I had no idea you were in Puerto Rico! Much love to you. 💕💕💕 4y
