Beutezeit: Roman | Jack Ketchum

I asked for “shocking and wild” recommendations and @Reggie really delivered with this one! It was gory, gross, and violent. The characterization isn‘t very deep and the plot is uncomplicated. Started slowly but when the action started, WHEW BOY, it escalated quickly and never let up. It was absolutely wild.

Squeamish readers should probably pass on this one.

Thanks, Reggie! This is exactly what I was looking for.😊

Reggie Lol, Yayyyy, I‘m glad it was what you wanted! 1y

This one was….gross and violent and bizarre. I was expecting that but I was hoping for a little more character development perhaps 🤷🏼‍♀️? It reminded me of those gross movies like The Hills Have Eyes. I don‘t mind gore or violence but I want something else, like a twist or something, to keep me interested and invested (think the Saw movies). Either way I was invested enough to finish it and think it‘s the perfect example of “just ok”. 🌟🌟🌟

tonymp This is on my shopping list for my next print book order. I guess you‘ll find out what I think. I was too young for it when it first came out so I guess it‘s been on my TBR since before TBR‘s! Your reaction might prove it lives up to the hype in its heyday? 2y
tonymp @candc320 it was harshly criticized for being “pornographic” and “gratuitous” about the gore. The author, however, shrugged it off and won literary awards. 1981 was a different time. I‘m glad you missed it. Lots of rainbows on poopy brown backgrounds. But yeah, a quick Google will show you the press dragged this novel through the mud. Like they did with Madonna and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. 2y
tonymp @candc320 didn‘t bother to Google, did you? 2y
tonymp Ummm like yeah. You‘re too busy to Google? To verify what I said? Acting like you‘re too busy to web search… reading is a solitary affair. Too young to have actually read it, too naïve to know what Google is means… 2y

Reagan @TheRiehlDeal it was really good! Very entertaining. 2y
Reagan @Reggie I‘m curious about the original that came out, this was the extended version. I might have to read the other to compare. I enjoyed the author notes about the negotiations of what would stay and what had to be removed. 2y

A disturbing slice of horror fiction that is fast-paced, brutal, and uncompromising. Be warned — this is not for the faint of heart.

#21DaysofHorror Day 12. I should be recommending The Girl Next Door by Ketchum but in the world of horror that would be like recommending A Little Life. So instead I‘ll recommend the first 2 in his Dead River trilogy. Ketchum is so good about making you care about his characters and embroiling you in their drama……right before he sacrifices most of them to a clan of cannibals. If you can do the goriest of body horror, give it a try!

rockpools I can‘t so I won‘t- but I am enjoying your horror posts all the same 😁 3y

vivastory Also, I had no idea this was part of a trilogy ✨The More You Know✨ 3y
Reggie @vivastory there is a moment in the first one where the horror gets broken for me because he goes too far and then I just started laughing, not because it was bad but because you just don‘t expect a person to keep going when writing something like that. I still loved it. 3y
Bookzombie Hmm, I thought I had read the second one too. I might just have go back and re-read Off Season. I also didn‘t know this was a trilogy. 3y

Ok, so I've read worse and you would expect a story about feral, inbred cannibal cave people to have more shock value than substance but there was just too little for me to say this was a good read. I mean, it's ok for what it is but there were so many holes, inconsistencies and horrible pacing issues that it's nothing I would recommend. If you want cannibals, watch TCM instead 🤷‍♀️

4.5⭐️ The best way I can describe this book, and I do in my other review, is a crazy mess of a book that took me on a Trigger filled roller coaster of a ride, and I mean that quite literally. While I loved the book, and I plan to read more by this author, I can‘t emphasize enough that half this book is potential triggers, and intense ones at that. #LMPBC

Cannibals anyone? I've had The Girl Next Door in my shelf for a while, but I've been too chicken to start it. So when I found this at a thrift store, I thought it might make a good Ketchum book to start with. It was his first after all. Well this book was wild! It is the uncut/uncensored version, and it definitely does not hold back. Lots of violence and gore. I loved it.

rachelm That blurb!! Lol love it! 4y
Reggie I loved this book. There was a point where I started laughing cause it was too much. But The Girl Next Door, it was so serious, I felt complicit in a murder by the end of it. It is dark. 4y

A group of friends from New York City travel to Dead River, Maine for a weeklong vacation by the coastline. Unbeknownst to them, however, a clan of inbred and cannibalistic savages has taken up residence in a secluded cave very close to them, and after night falls they are attacked by the marauders, forcing them to become as depraved and barbaric as their tormentors are in an effort to survive. #Gory @Clwojick #BlackCatChallenge

A woman rents a middle of nowhere house in Maine during the off season and invites her sister and other guests for a week stay. What none of them could plan for were the horde of cannibals who have chosen them for their next meal. This isn‘t literary (of course) but I enjoyed Jack‘s writing, his characters, and even his explanation from whence the horde began. I will warn you, there is page after page of straight up, over the top, violence. 👇🏼

Reggie And just when you think he‘s done, Jack adds a few more. After the book is done Jack talks about how this version was different from the one published 19 years prior by Ballantine Books who stuck him in a room with an editor who fought him on every page. It was very interesting. He also includes a short story I quite enjoyed having to do with the same Maine area. This book was inspired by the legend of Sawney Bean (crazy true story that also 6y
Reggie inspired The Hills Have Eyes) and George Romero‘s Night of the Living Dead. It‘s a must read for horror fans. R.I.P Jack Ketchum. 6y

Reggie @Chrissyreadit Yeah, a large part of the cannibal clan is this pack of feral kids so maybe not? Cause what happens to everybody in here is no walk in the park. 6y

Bookzombie @Reggie I read this years ago and I liked it. There is a sequel, but I haven‘t read it. 6y
Bookzombie I just got this one in from the library to try after I finish my two current reads and it has to do with cannibals. 6y
Reggie @Bookzombie there is a movie for Offspring but not for Off Season. I saw the trailer for it on YouTube and it looks brutal. I‘ll probably check out the book but just need a 1 book break to recenter myself. That was ALOT of carnage. Have you started your Halloween pile yet? 6y
Chrissyreadit @Bookzombie what did you think? 6y
Chrissyreadit @Reggie I need some gentle horror to ease back in. 6y
Reggie @Chrissyreadit try Norman Partridge‘s Dark Harvest or Robert McCammon‘s Border and if you can do those two try Kealan Patrick Burke‘s Kin. 6y
Bookzombie @Reggie I‘m not sure I want to see either in movie form. Lol. It was a lot of carnage. I thought I had a copy of Offspring on my shelf but it‘s not there. I haven‘t. I‘m trying to finish Out and another book for a challenge, but my pile has grown. I got 4 holds in from the library and then I pulled some off my shelves to read and possibly reread. 😜 6y
Bookzombie @Chrissyreadit I agree with Reggie‘s review. I have read 4 of Ketchum‘s books so far and he is a really good writer. The horror is usually brutal though. Definitely not for the faint of heart. 6y

Totally getting Ania Ahlborn The Shuddering vibes. Lots of emotions from people who don‘t know they are on the menu planned by the Wrong Turn backward inbred coastal Maine hillbillies. This is all because Nick accepted ex-gf Carla‘s friendzone invitation to the middle of nowhere for a week. He brought new gf, Laura. I love the horror genre, but I‘ve always been nervous to read Ketchum. I have a pretty high threshold for “gross stuff”, but his books have always been on my “nope” list.

With his recent passing, I decided I want to try at least 1 book before I nix him from my TBR. The Girl Next Door will always be a nope. I know the true crime it‘s based on and I can‘t do it. But I‘ll give a family of cannibals a try. 🍴

Ok...deep breath...let‘s get started. 😬

batsy Yet another author I've yet to read... Brought to my attention recently thanks to a review by @Reggie 7y
Reggie @batsy This is really sad to me. I was watching a lecture he gave to a writer‘s retreat on YouTube the other day. If you‘re going to read him @batsy, read Red. It‘s the least violent of his I‘ve read. On a side note, that‘s O‘Riordan, Le Guin, and now Ketchum. That‘s 3. We should be done for a while. That‘s a lot of sadness and broken hearts. 7y
batsy @Reggie ❤️❤️ So many sad readers out there right now... Thanks for the rec, I'll definitely stack Red. But I'm sad about the dog, Reggie, so I will have to work myself up to that! I like the sound of this one 7y
Reggie I put this in someone‘s comment but I‘m gonna put it in here also. In my 20‘s I went to a party where someone threatened to kill someone with a knife. I prayed to a god I don‘t believe in that they would not let me see someone get killed. Nobody died that night. But after reading TGND that‘s how I felt, that I had been there to watch this girl get killed, and I felt horrible. Stick to Red, the end at least has redemptive value. @batsy 7y
batsy @Reggie I was just looking at the reviews on Goodreads and yeah 😧 I'll take your advice and stick to Red. (I had a similar experience in my 20s at my uni residence. I can sympathise 🙁) 7y

I'm not sure this is one of the "greatest horror books of all-time"... I generally wouldn't toss a book about cannibalism into that ring. However, this was quite disturbing. Every time my husband walked into the room while I was reading, I was making some type of horrified/grossed out face. I'm pretty happy with the ending...nothing feel-good about any of it, which I greatly appreciate. If you want a fast, gore filled read than this is your book.

ReadingOver50 I find Jack Ketchum to be the most disturbing author 8y
