Stoker's last, worst book is based on the legend of the Lambton Worm (in coal country rather than clay). It is awful, especially in the form I, and everyone else, read it: the 1925 edition. This edition claims to be the 1911 text, but not only cuts over 100 pages (and 12 entire chapters), but rewrites entire sections. The 1925 edition makes no sense and is way, way more racist. So now I need to read the real book. 😭

Faranae If like me you hate happiness and are seeking the 1911 text: Project Gutenberg and Open Archive both have the 1925 Foulsham which claims to be the 1911 text. You will have to dig around to find the original, which is 40 chapters, not 28, and contains 6 illustrations rather than 2. In print, it should be 324 pages, a proper novel length, and not a novella. 12mo

Mr. Salton gave instructions to have ready a carriage early on the important day, to start for Stafford, where he would catch the 11:40 a.m. train. He would stay that night with his grand-nephew, either on the ship, which would be a new experience for him, or, if his guest should prefer it, at a hotel....

#quotsyjune19 @TK-421 When this novel by Stoker was released in 1911, it was badly received - one reviewer wrote that it was “one of the most spectacularly #incoherent novels ever to reach print”. I love the pulpy images and the fact that one claims this to be “another masterpiece”. Granted, I‘ve never read it so I don‘t know if it‘s actually as bad as all that.

cookreadsleep I‘d never even heard of this. Now I‘m interested! 5y
cookreadsleep Oh wow. It is one of the lowest rated books on goodreads and the first review is about the racism in the book. Yikes! 5y
StrangeLibrarian I‘ve heard it was a cult classic as a movie. Good luck? 5y

I wanted to review it at the end of October but honestly I was glad to have had finished it! So much #mongooselove to the entire #wormybuddyread group as it seems from their reviews we were all in the same boat.
Besides the racism displayed, there were moments while reading this that felt like Stoker lost his idea of execution on the plot which is a shame considering his other works.

Worst of the month (by a country mile!) was the #wormybuddyread title that I chose! Apologies to those who endured this sexist, racist book with me #mongooselove Thanks to those who joined me too - it was a tough month IRL and the #buddyread helped immensely ❤️ (I can't talk about my fav of the month because it's #topsecret for #TheCanadianTour #Canadagoespostal)

The overriding feeling I got from this book was of abridgment, like this was a drastically trimmed version of a longer, possibly more coherent story. And yet Stoker found time to add a character whose main role seemed to be for others to be racist about 😐 Not recommended for recreational reading. Maybe as part of a study on the evolution of the horror novel?

rabbitprincess All this said, I appreciate having shared the #wormybuddyread with @BookishTrish et al., and now I KNOW the movie has to be better than the book (not least because of Peter Capaldi 😍😍😍). 7y

I implied I was bailing from this book for #wormybuddyread but it was my first time with Serial Reader & issues kept coming & I had to see it through-finishing up yesterday. Not much to say other than it's just really bad--shallowly written plot & characters & not at all scary unless you're a mongoose.😱The racism & sexism are downers. The movie is on Showtime & I plan to rewatch it. It's different than the book & also bad-but in a campy fun way.

DebinHawaii @BookishTrish Even though I panned it, thanks for picking it. It introduced me to using Serial Reader which I had been meaning to try and now I can say I've read it! 😆👍 7y
batsy Serial Reader is great! FYI there's also the option of cancelling a subscription under "Settings" for each story; they stop sending issues and the story is removed from your list. 7y

I absolutely love Dracula, so this was a major disappointment.

The plot was incredibly hard to follow, characters just magically knew impossible things, and you don‘t even really find out much about the white worm or the lair!

I understand there was some racism at the time this was written, and it is no worse than that seen in books like Gone with the Wind, but the character added nothing to the story. It‘s all very odd...

#OnlyLikedTheMongoose

JazzFeathers It is very disappointing. I haven't read Dracula yet, but l read some of Stocker's shorter stories and really loved them. I bailed on this one... 7y

HAHAHAHA HAH. No. 😒 You have got to be effin kidding me. I was wondering if the whole plot line of Edgar preying on Lilla had just been dropped, but it's worse. Lilla is oblivious, doesn't even understand that Mimi's struggle with him was to protect Lilla, and is now considering MARRYING HIM JUST BECAUSE HE'S RICH and because she wants to be married like her cousin. Shoot me now before I face palm myself to death. ⬇️

So in order to protect Mimi from Lady Arabella, they leave Lilla without her only protection against Edgar. And Mimi goes along with this!? She doesn't even tell Lilla she's leaving? Day 20 #uncannyoctober #rocktober I've been reading this book with #wormybuddyread & lots of people are bailing due to the book being boring, its incessant racism & the fact that most of us care only for the mongooses. I've considered it & today I got a sign but I'm not sure if it's keep going or stop.😬I picked up a RX at Walgreens today & at the counter heard a scrambling sound & a guy with a broom runs out from the back yelling 'Watch Out!'👇🏻

DebinHawaii ... and ahead of his broom I see a small long skinny light brown blur running towards me & it takes a jump over my feet-close enough to feel its fur, hisses loudly & takes off down another hallway, the guy madly chasing it. There's a pet store next door & so I thought it was a ferret until I realized they are illegal in Hawaii. It was a freakin' mongoose!😱(Yes, really it was a mongoose and not a skinny cat!) 🙀😹 (edited) 7y
DebinHawaii ...So... is that a sign to stop reading the book & escape like the mongoose or keep reading it in support of the mongoose?! 🤣🤣🤣 Only in Hawaii! BTW I think this adventure counts for both #booksinthewild & (loosely) #foxylady (or rather mongoosey lady) so I'm using it for today's prompts! 👍😆 And apologies for the long post but I had to share my adventure tale! Bailedbailed

Apologies to fellow #wormybuddyread readers but I'm gonna have to bail on this one. I can't bear another moment of these fascists going on about the supremacy of the white race. For all I care, they can stare at each other and mesmerise themselves to death. The effing white worm is taking too damn long to show up; when it does, I hope it promptly munches on all of them and lets Oolonga go free. Since I doubt that's the ending, bailing seems wise.

batsy Same @Leniverse 😂😂😂 I'm close to bailing but a part of me is curious if the white worm swallows up all of those tedious people in the end. 7y

batsy In terms of the story, it's still a bit weird. I feel like it could be spookier / more menacing, or it could be sort of campy-funny. But it's sort of stuck in the middle. As far as the characters are concerned, the only one who makes me feel anything so far is the mongoose. 😂 7y
rabbitprincess @batsy Yes, the mongoose! Aw! I am finding it more suspenseful than anticipated, possibly because we're reading serially. If I were just reading it in print or on regular e-reader I might not be as interested. 7y
Leniverse I find that it is rather obvious in its good/evil dichotomy. And too much action takes place off stage and is then just recounted to other characters. I agree with @batsy that it's stuck in between menacing and campy. I try to picture Vincent Price as Edgar. That's helping me maintain interest. 7y
See All 7 Comments
JazzFeathers I'm still not sure how l feel about it. In a way, l like the gothic setting and the classic use of so many gothic tropes (the dangerous woman, the dameselle in distress, the archienemy) On the other it's very weird, with its stereotyped fear of the different and the obvious dychotony good/evil. And still there is also some sense of building. Let's see where it goes 😊 7y
athorne Hm. I have to agree with the aforementioned dichotomy, though I appreciate the reversal of colors. It's becoming more and more clear that Lady Arabella may be the villain, and yet she presents herself in the colors of purity. Simultaneously, Adam seems to be relying on darker magic, for lack of a better word, to figure out what is going on. I could do without the frequent use of the n-word, though. 7y
DebinHawaii I've had a lot going on lately and not posting much but I have been reading my sections daily. It's interesting. I'm not loving it but it does have me intrigued. Like others have mentioned I could do without all the racism and language around it-it jars me out of the story. It is quite campy & melodramatic. Edgar & his kite... hmm... 🤷🏻‍♀️I do think this is the way to read it though, in short sections. 😆👍 7y
DarcysMom I have had a hard time with the blatant racism, too. I am enjoying how totally ridiculous Edgar is. And, I am interested in the outcome of Arabella's scheming. 7y

DarcysMom I was troubled by it too. 😝 7y
batsy It's so nasty. I haven't been able to continue after enduring that chapter. I saw it coming with the early sections where Adam's uncle talks about "preserving our race" and whatnot and was thinking race is a funny word to use for "family ties" ? 7y
athorne @batsy I didn't see it as a foreshadow, as I've seen the word race used to describe just that in other books that have taken place in the same time period. @Leniverse It certainly wasn't an easy chapter to read, that's for sure. Definitely a product of its time. I don't think I've seen that word used so many times in such a short span - and I live in a very conservative Arkansas town with next to no diversity. 7y
batsy @TheGhastlyGrimoire In Shakespeare's time, maybe. But in the context of the Victorian era, the era of colonialism & racial categorisation of foreigners, in texts that tend to express either overt or latent racism & orientalism, the connotations of the word are not innocent or neutral. Because it's about the preservation of the white kinship lines against "foreigners", especially in the context of the virulent racism spewed by Adam. 7y
athorne @batsy Oh, I'm not doubting that. I was just saying that his uncle's use of the word "race" for family didn't foreshadow or warn me as a reader of the impending blatant racism that was coming. I tend to desensitize myself prior to reading most texts that are older. (Though considering some of what I read, I have to.) It's absolutely disgusting and I debated not continuing to read the book when I encountered it, because I could have done without it 7y
athorne @batsy ESPECIALLY the manner in which Africa is described as a whole. I don't deal well with ignorance, and racism goes hand in hand with that. We were -all- darker skinned once, as Africa is where the first humans migrated from. I guess I just expected more of a celebrated author who helped set the guidelines for horror. It's like a child learning how racist Walt Disney was in life. 😿 (edited) 7y
batsy @TheGhastlyGrimoire Yes, I understand what you mean! Reading a lot of these older texts means having to desensitise oneself at some level. In a lot of cases there is something worthwhile: beautiful language or a compelling story. And sometimes it's also a lesson in learning how people used to think. Inevitably I'm still always disappointed when I see this kind of thing in an older book, even though I know I shouldn't be surprised 😞 7y
athorne @batsy When I said I've seen it in other books that take place in that time period, I was largely referring to more recent authors. 😅 I just started truly delving into non-streamlined MUST READ classics because of Litsy and a kitten telling me about Serial Reader. The past is a brutal and painful truth. I can't and don't want to imagine it. My family comes from Mexico, but I've got my Dad's name. People spew their racism about us at me, because 7y
athorne @batsy with my being sick and overweight, my olive tones have taken on a more pale hue. I usually let them finish the tirade and then do one of two things, depending on the situation: introduce them to mi abuelo or straight up tell them I'm Hispanic. There is so much suffering and tragedy (and crime!) in our past. It would make for interesting books from a different perspective if more of them had been writers. (edited) 7y
batsy @TheGhastlyGrimoire Ugh :( It's so revealing how much people say when they think you're one of their kind or whatever. Just awful. (Ah ok, understood about what you meant, books by contemporary authors set in the past 😆) 7y
Leniverse @batsy @TheGhastlyGrimoire I wasn't forewarned by the uncle either. "Preserving our race" normally just means getting an heir, even in Victorian fiction. Race to them was the bloodline, the family tree, no reference to skin colour. They married their cousins all the time, which, while it afforded some protection for women who otherwise had few rights, seems xenophobic in the extreme, but it's not racism in today's meaning of the word. 7y
Leniverse @rabbitprincess @TrishB @LibrarianRyan @DarcysMom @batsy @TheGhastlyGrimoire I'm extra disappointed because it's such a cheap hack in horror writing of that era. Tapping into xenophobia and ignorance. But often it was more subtle, just talk of dark rituals of a dark continent etc etc. Here it was really in your face. (But then, there's been nothing subtle about this story at all so far.) 7y
athorne @Leniverse @batsy The act of referring to Africa as The Dark Continent as it is in much older literature has only made it more interesting to me, but totally. And yeeeeah. Definitely no subtlety. 7y

Leniverse No? We are finally being introduced to the possibility of a worm. Or wyrm. They speak of it as being in the past, and I suppose the title only promises the lair and not the worm. But Arabella dresses in white, and snakes are afraid of her, so I suspect her of being a sort of worm/woman shapeshifter. At the very least I'm sure she's up to dreadful pagan rituals in the ancient lair! 😄 7y
Leniverse But I'm getting confused as to which sister Adam is interested in. 🤔 7y
batsy @Leniverse Yes, Stoker seems quite heavy-handed with the symbolism and clues. So definitely get the sense that she's Lady Wyrm. Lol! And I have a hard time keeping track of which Watford girl he's into, as well 😂 7y

Leniverse @batsy Lady Wyrm! Excellent. Let Arabella henceforth be known as Lady Wyrm. 😂 7y
JazzFeathers It's been quite slow going. But there's also some kind of building. It's very weird. 7y
athorne I somehow completely missed the correlation between Lady Wyrm and... well, Stoker's worm. And as far as the wyrm/worm goes, it seems like he's alluding to the greatness of dragons diminishing into slimy things. Which... after the Lady Arabella comment, actually can allude to her fall from wealth and power to having no money but a manor all the same! @batsy It seems to me that Adam wants them both, but the half-Burmese one is more exotic to him. 7y

Leniverse I'm confused by the "obedience" part of this. ? 7y
Aleida Maybe that for men love inevitably leads to obedience. Idk 7y
athorne @Leniverse @Aleida I think it's more a romanticization of what love once was. Men and women were of a different breed when Stoker was writing, and in that rose-tinted view, a man obeys the woman he loves, just as much as she might submit herself to him. Not unlike a woman having a man that admires her wrapped around her finger, so to speak. (edited) 7y

Reading this latest #serialread maybe I overestimated Adam in thinking he has ulterior motives... I mean for all I know this is the only living relative he has so why not be excited? He could be the human equivalent of a puppy...
Also the introduction of a new character, adding a female into so far an all male group could make the next read interesting depending on what's said.
I guess only time will tell.

mariaku21 @JazzFeathers I just thought it was too weird, his excitement for meeting his uncle, but after sleeping it over and rereading them along with tonight's read, the human puppy made more sense 7y
Leniverse I never thought he was dodgy. It all seems pretty straightforward. Adam - hero. Snake woman and hypnotic Edgar - villains. Adam should have gone for that special mongoose from Nepal instead of a regular one! 7y
See All 6 Comments
mariaku21 @Leniverse haha I didn't think hero when it came to Adam, I seriously just thought he was a little to "excited" to be meeting his unheard of uncle so my suspicious mind automatically went to "Hmmmm idk but this guy is suspicious". Seriously didn't help that I was watching a lot of Law and Order while reading. So a snake woman and hypnotic Edgar you say? 7y
Leniverse You haven't read today's instalment? Well, Edgar (and all his forbears who are also named Edgar, and isn't that suspicious?) has also previously been described as having a strange power to make people do his bidding. As for the snake woman, well, you'll see. I think we need suspicious minds of the X-Files variety here. Law & Order will lead you astray. 😂 7y
mariaku21 @Leniverse not yet since I'm getting ready for work. I guess I'm going to have to watch some X-Files later... to get into the mood before reading today's installment... wow is me, Fox Mulder here I come 7y

I'm thinking Adam's up to something but I've been watching Law and Order : Criminal Intent all day but this quote comes from the Uncle which I also find equally suspicious so far... to early to tell but can't wait for tomorrow #serialreads installment.

DarcysMom Adam bothers me. He seems suspicious and untrustworthy. I think he had a reason for coming to England beyond his uncle's invitation. I picture Ethan Hawke as Adam. 7y
See All 10 Comments
mariaku21 @BookishTrish I'm agreeing with @DarcysMom about a possibility of another purpose besides his Uncle's invitation for him coming to England. Especially with such zeal for what surmises to be a stranger still.... thinking about Adam, I picture Harry Treadaway from penny dreadful (he played Dr. Frankenstein) 7y
DebinHawaii Hmm.. that's a tough one. Even though the book seems totally different from the movie & the characters are different/different names, I am seeing Adam in my head as a young Hugh Grant who played Lord James d'Ampton in the movie. 7y
mariaku21 @DebinHawaii I haven't seen the film but my sister did mention to me that it's not a real adaptation of the Stoker book when I mentioned I was reading this. But a young Hugh Grant is always a good choice! 7y
batsy I also don't feel completely comfortable with Adam. He is a bit of a blank slate at this point and it's hard to figure out his motivations. He seems to be willing to absorb as much information as he can. I picture Eddie Redmayne as the character. 7y
Leniverse I think Adam is being cast as the hero. He is a young gentleman farmer with no family and a farm that runs itself. He is at leisure and has an interest in Roman Britain. Why wouldn't he welcome the invitation from his great uncle? (Of course he could be lying and be angling for an inheritance.) I think a young Hugh Grant is a bit too gormless. Redmayne would work, but I'd rather cast an Australian. A young Simon Baker or a Hemsworth brother. 7y
rabbitprincess Like @DebinHawaii I am picturing him as Hugh Grant. I'm more keeping an eye on the uncle...he's so solicitous and attentive that I feel like something is up! 7y
athorne I haven't developed feelings one way or the other as of yet. 7y

I am not reading this on serial reader, so may get a little ahead or behind at times.

The first 2 chapters were an interesting start. Everyone seems much too pleased to be meeting each other, which seems very suspect even if they are long lost relatives. And if the Caswall estate has been empty for so long, and the family have a reputation for being cold hearted, why are the other estates celebrating the return of the family? 🤔

Heideschrampf The freudian in me can't help but be horrified and fascinated by that title (+cover🍆) 🤦‍♀️ As dracula didn't specifically burst of female agency I'll be looking forward to your review 😉 (edited) 7y
Bookworm54 @Heideschrampf it‘s an interesting one isn‘t it... I‘m intrigued as to how the story will progress ☺️ 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I am very distracted by those butt cheeks. Yowza. 😧 7y
JazzFeathers The first chapter dud have kind of s creepy feeling about it. Let's see what today's chapter will bring 😊 7y

tpixie FYI avid bookworm 76 has been blocked by many people for her meanness. She has changed her handle 3-4 times. Be careful. She has been known to not send her Book exchanges. I am just learning this today. 7y
mariaku21 @tpixie oh... thank you for the heads up. I'll keep that in mind 7y
tpixie I know you can make your own decisions, I just wanted to give you heads up! I just found out about all this today & it kind of upset me. Happy Reading 📖! 7y
mariaku21 Haha I completely understand and seriously thank you. Hopefully it doesn't upset you for long, anger in any form, shouldn't be held on to for too long. Happy weekend and reason to you too! 7y

batsy This is "minor" history maybe but I'd like to have been around as the printing press was introduced. 7y
athorne I'll be doing my reading here in a bit! Finishing up my arc! :D 7y
DarcysMom This is such a great question. There is so much I would love to witness. The first thing that I thought of was the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. I would love to see Boudicca and her army in the move. I would like to see Martin Luther posting his complaints on the church door. I would like to witness the Roman Senate in action. Oh, and see Hannibal's war elephants. I am stopping now... 7y

Dragon I would love to see the Wright brothers take their first flight. ✈️ 7y
Leniverse I'd like to visit the Library of Alexandria at its height. I'd like to see the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. I'd like to see how they made the Pyramids, both in Egypt and in Mexico and South America (although I suspect there was a lot of human suffering involved that might make it a negative experience). And... I'd love to go to Woodstock. And The Last Waltz. And the final Ziggy Stardust concert. And and... 😂 7y
Bookworm54 I have always loved ancient Egypt, so seeing Egypt in its height would be a big one! Mayan civilisation in its height, making the statues of Easter island, victorians, vikings... it would be hard to choose! 7y
rabbitprincess I'd go to the Cavern Club to see the early Beatles ♥️😍 7y
tournevis You know, as a Historical anthropologist, my answer is that I'll stay right here where it's safe and the medications work, and women have never had it this good. Can only get better from here. Stayi g right herr. 7y
Conservio You should check out the St. Mary's Chronicles! But I'd want to see the Out of Africa migrations or the Carboniferous period (edited) 7y
DebinHawaii Going with my first gut reaction & probably because I recently watched a special about Amelia Earhart and her disappearance, I would like to be there to know what really happened. 7y

It's been a busy day of no reading, but now I'm finally ready to start the #wormybuddyread
I have tea and Cadbury, and called dibs on the iPad so I don't have to read on my phone. 😁 (Ok, first instalment is only 7 minutes, so I'll not even have finished my tea. Grabbing some more books. 😂)

Well, let's start this!
The first chapter isn't too exciting, but Victorian gothic is often like this.

I've never read Dracula, but l read a few gothic short stories by Bram Stoker years ago and really liked them 😊

mariaku21 Besides paying off my students loans... I wanted to see the world's abandoned places; amusement parks, castles, hospitals, etc. that have been taken over by nature 7y
JazzFeathers Pay for one lenghty travel a year 😊 7y
rabbitprincess I'm boring and would prefer my hypothetical generous rich uncle to put some money away for me as a nest egg for whenever I retire 😬 And I'd love the uncle to ensure that my grandma (and parents and in-laws, eventually) will have support to stay in their homes as long as possible. 7y
DebinHawaii I would like my rich uncle to pay off any bills and my mortgage and if he would contribute to my retirement fund, I would love that too. 😀👍 7y

Behold my motivation for joining @BookishTrish in her #wormybuddyread... the 1988 movie adaptation, featuring Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi 😍😍😍

(The movie is rather loosely based on the book, from what I've read on Wikipedia, so I will treat them as two separate entities.)

Faibka With Peter Capaldi?? Cool!! 7y
rabbitprincess @Faibka Yes! I haven't seen the movie, but I love the photos from it 😍 7y
DebinHawaii Such an incredibly bad, so bad it's almost good, B-movie. 😱👍 I've never read the book though. 😆 7y

rabbitprincess @DebinHawaii But is it scary? Part of me wants to watch for P-Cap, but the rest of me is too scared based on some of the pictures I found when looking for this one 😰 7y
DebinHawaii @rabbitprincess Honestly, I found it far more strange and campy than truly scary but I don't know your sensitivity level. The white worm is kind of gross looking but all put together it didn't frighten me much. 7y
rabbitprincess @DebinHawaii I'm thinking of Sylvia when she is that vampire thing...she reminded me of the Weeping Angels on Doctor Who (which admittedly doesn't help you judge Sylvia's scariness if you don't watch Doctor Who...) 7y
rabbitprincess @DebinHawaii I startle very easily and generally don't watch horror at all. 7y
DebinHawaii @rabbitprincess OK, you will probably find the movie scarier than I did. You likely will startle in spots. Although I've seen it several times--a friend was very addicted to 80s B-horror movies, it has been years since I've watched it--so maybe I'll have to watch it again & think about it. Sadly, I don't watch Dr. Who but Lady Silvia is a bit scary/startling for sure. 7y
batsy Peter Capaldi, you say? Now I have to watch it 🤗 7y
rabbitprincess @DebinHawaii Thanks for the input! 😊 @batsy It would certainly be interesting...! 7y

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this somewhat lesser known Bram Stoker novel, making a great bookish revival. The giant hawk kite of Edgar Caswall sets a lingering darkly atmosphere, reading quite hilariously as a form of passive-aggressive energy vampirism. The green-eyed Worm glow is vintage horror awesomeness as well. - I'm glad to have a Penguin yellow cover copy. I've also noticed the #serialreader app has it in. 🕯
