Marjorie Morningstar
Marjorie Morningstar | Herman Wouk
A starry-eyed young beauty, Marjorie Morgenstern is nineteen years old when she leaves New York to accept the job of her dreams-working in a summer-stock company for Noel Airman, its talented and intensely charismatic director. Released from the social constraints of her traditional Jewish family, and thrown into the glorious, colorful world of theater, Marjorie finds herself entangled in a powerful affair with the man destined to become the greatest-and the most destructive-love of her life. Rich with humor and poignancy, Marjorie Morningstar is a classic love story, one that spans two continents and two decades in the life of its heroine. This unforgettable paean to youthful love and the bittersweet sorrow of a first heartbreak endures as one of Herman Wouk's most beloved creations.

This is me walking my dogs. 🙈
Some days I just want to go to my favourite spot in the woods and let my dogs run around while I enjoy some sunshine and a book. After a while I usually get up and walk, eyes still on my book, just as Elizabeth Bennet did, in Pride and Prejudice.

Mehso-so

Mixed feelings about this one: loved the affectionate glimpses of mid-20th centuty middle-class Jewish life, the insight into New York theater business, and the occasional philosophizing about shifting mores and the century's central moral crisis. But the title character wastes way too many thoughts on men and too much time as a sounding board for men's ideas; and the resolution feels like a moral that the Old Ways are best.

Customs of courtship vary greatly in different times and places, but the way the thing happens to be done here and now always seems the only natural way to do it.

I #crave good coming of age stories. This one is old but timeless (at least from what I‘ve been told. It‘s still on my TBR.) Marjorie is a young woman trying to make it on her own when she is caught up in a torrid love affair. #MOvember

jillrhudy Hey, it happens! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
Cinfhen I don‘t know why but I always think of Barbara Streisand when I think of this book 🤷🏼‍♀️I‘m going to suggest this for my bookclub 😃 5y
Reviewsbylola Beware, it‘s a chunkster! @Cinfhen 5y
Cinfhen I saw! Maybe it will be a good summer read for our bookclub 👙 5y

I loved @DebBates101 post about the oldest book she owns; and to both answer her post‘s question and flatter her with imitation I‘m posting my own.

The oldest book I own and have read is my mother‘s copy of Marjorie Morningstar that she read as a teen. (The scribbles on the front cover are from my 4yr old self😱lol)

DebBates101 I love it!! Especially since it has a history behind it 💖 7y

In the left stack are the books bought in March 😬, on the right are books read in March (some of which were also bought this month!). I also finished the following on Serial Reader: Vanity Fair, The Turn of the Screw, and The Canterville Ghost.

My favorites this month were all from #BOTM! Pachinko, Siracusa, and The Stranger in the Woods.

I've already read more in the first 3 months of 2017 than in all of 2016! Definitely thanks to Litsy! 📚

Suzze I've read 36 books so far this year. I've purchased 39. 😜😜 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Ooo - I see Remains of the Day. Such a gem. Enjoy! 8y
emilyhaldi @Suzze I don't even know how many books I bought in Jan/Feb but I'm probably around your number! My total read for the year is 33, so maybe I can justify it? 😂 8y
emilyhaldi @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled glad you liked it!! I didnt know much about it when I added to my BOTM box last month. 8y
Reviewsbylola Damn girl. I didn't realize you finished VF. I'm only 2/3 through. 8y

I'm determined to post an image every day of #marchintoreading and here is my March TBR:

A Fatal Grace by Louise Penny
A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan
The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
Friday's Child by Georgette Heyer
Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk
Shelter by Jung Yun

Also plan to read on my Kindle:

Dawn by Octavia E Butler
The North Water by Ian McGuire

Disclaimer: None of the above is written in stone!!!🤓

Reviewsbylola Shelter is pretty good. It gives you a lot to think about! 8y
RealLifeReading After putting Shelter on my tbr posts for a couple of months I finally read it last month and it was really good. 8y

Didn't think I had any books in view (have I mentioned my inactivity?😁) with a proper name, then remembered what I bought last week. #titlewithapropername #ReadJanuary

Reviewsbylola I've been wanting to read this since I saw it in 8y
Suzze @Reviewsbylola I forgot that was one of the titles in that. 8y
MamaGina I read this many MANY years ago as a teenager, again in my late 20's and plan to reread it for the read harder challenge. It will be interesting to see if my 55 year old self loves it too!🤓 8y
MamaGina Had no idea it was part of End of Your Life Book Club, now I want to read that one! #booksarelikedominos 📚📚📚😍 8y
Suzze @MamaGina I bought it because I remember my sister reading it in her late teens. I was maybe 12 at the time. (edited) 8y

Pickpick

As I'm "pounding the pavement" of New York just for fun this week, for #Recommendsday I thought of one of the first books that made me fall in love with the city.
