A dozen women join a secret 1850s Arctic expedition--and a sensational murder trial unfolds when some of them don't come back.Eccentric Lady Jane Franklin makes an outlandish offer to adventurer Virginia Reeve: take a dozen women, trek into the Arctic, and find her husband's lost expedition. Four parties have failed to find him, and Lady Franklin wants a radical new approach: put the women in charge.A year later, Virginia stands trial for murder. Survivors of the expedition willing to publicly support her sit in the front row. There are only five. What happened out there on the ice?Set against the unforgiving backdrop of one of the world's most inhospitable locations, USA Today bestselling author Greer Macallister uses the true story of Lady Jane Franklin's tireless attempts to find her husband's lost expedition as a jumping-off point to spin a tale of bravery, intrigue, perseverance and hope.

Despite other challenges and a reading slump I‘m grateful for the summer. It just feel so good to be outside. 🌞🌳🌞

Ruthiella Love that you are reading a cold weather book in the sun! 😃👍 2y
BiblioLitten @Ruthiella I had kept this one aside for winter but I wanted to read an adventure book and this one was available. 😊 2y

Long weekend calls for a decadent Argentinian tart and this ‘winter‘ book. I had set this book aside for winter months but I was in the mood for some adventure. Glad I gave in because I‘m thoroughly enjoying it. ❄️🌊❄️ #currentlyreading

DivineDiana That tart looks delicious! I have this book and also was thinking a winter read. But I like the way you think! 😊 2y
BiblioLitten @DivineDiana I enjoyed this book especially because it is set in the 1800s. I would have liked to know a bit more about the minor characters. I‘m going to be more serious about frostbite after reading this. ❄️ 2y

I thoroughly enjoyed this well researched tale of hardship and survival, though I did have to handwave a couple things*. I almost wish the trial hadn't happened, to give more room for the stories of these women, individually and as they traveled together & learned to rely on each other. Having said that, the trial was interesting as well as infuriating. As for the things that didn't quite make sense: several of the women chosen to go were odd ⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ choices. Also, as the leader of the expedition, Virginia should have been given much more information from the beginning. Lastly, why didn't Ebba and Althea attest at trial that the patron was Lady Jane?? Still, I liked it. This is my January #BookSpin @TheAromaofBooks 2y

Arctic Fury is hands down the kind of female-led book you want to kick down new year‘s winter doors with! Witty comebacks, gruelling conditions, and a wonderful cast of characters. Full review is on my GoodReads!

Right book, wrong time. I've had this book sitting beside me for the better part of a week and I'm only 30 pages in. Waving the white flag for now, and picking up another book.
I'm really wanting to meet my reading goal for the year during this month and so, I want quick, exciting reads. Unfortunately, “Arctic Fury“ is not the right read for me right now. Back to the TBR for this one. This was my #Doublespin book for the month.
@TheAromaOfBooks

TheAromaofBooks I've had a couple books this week that I've put back in the pile. Sometimes I just know that I'll enjoy a book later rather than forcing myself to read it right now! 2y

I can forgive a few historical bendings of the truth - this is of course fiction. I really enjoyed spending time in the Arctic with these women - seeing their vulnerability in nature actually give them the strength to shake off the constraints they've lived under in nineteenth century society. There's some great detail of the expedition - that helps you really feel the depth of cold a winter in the north can offer. Grab a blanket and dive in!

This week I did my first #readingonlocation for nearly 2 years. I love finding a quiet reading space that adds something to my reading. This week I took the tagged book - all about a band of women travelling across the Arctic Circle to try to find Franklin. - to the Polar Museum, part of the Geological Dept at Cambridge University

DGRachel That‘s amazing! 2y
TrishB That sounds fab. 2y

Mitch @DGRachel I had a magical hour reading on a bench under this massive ceiling painting of the Arctic north ♥️ 2y

kplovesbooks Such a great book!!! 💪 Enjoy!! And happy birthday! 3y
lynneamch Loved this one at my last bookclub. We also spent some time talking about the real women who inspired some of the characters referenced in the author notes. Also led to a discussion about what the adventurous women in our families were doing in 1850. 3y

"In the front row sit the survivors." This evocative first line sets up a chilling tale, in more ways than one. In 1854, Virginia Reeve stands trial for the murder of Caprice Collins, just one of the adventurous women who failed to return from their quest to discover the fate of Sir John Franklin's #lost expedition. This was so good! A bunch of strong woman who can do amazing things, some not boring courtroom drama, and lots of suspense it was right up my alley. This was the last book I finished in 2020 and it was such a nice way to close out the year.

lynneamch Loved it, too! She's doing a virtual event tonight at https://www.fountainbookstore.com/melanieandgreer011221 with Melanie Benjamin. Another book to chill us. Think I'll watch with some hot cider. 3y
lynneamch Did you know Greer's next book comes out 2/22/22? It's feminist fantasy, as G. R. Macallister 2y

This was an enjoyable HF novel. A group of women are chosen to search for the missing crew & ships of Sir John Franklin, a British Naval explorer who went missing in 1848 exploring the Arctic Circle. This was a great blend of history, fiction and courtroom thriller. Thanks for the gift @Hestapleton and kudos to @theladygreer for her outstanding research, attention to detail and creating such memorable characters who felt authentic & fresh.

Hestapleton I really need to start reading books by this author! They all sound so interesting! 3y
