When The Reckoning Comes
When The Reckoning Comes | Tanya McQueen
28 posts | 28 read | 25 to read
A haunting novel about a black woman who returns to her hometown for a plantation wedding and the horror that ensues as she reconnects with the blood-soaked history of the land and the best friends she left behind.
More than a decade ago, Mira fled her small, segregated hometown in the south to forget. With every mile she traveled, she distanced herself from her past: from her best friend Celine, mocked by their town as the only white girl with black friends; from her old neighborhood; from the eerie Woodsman plantation rumored to be haunted by the spirits of slaves; from the terrifying memory of a ghost she saw that terrible day when a dare-gone-wrong almost got Jesse—the boy she secretly loved—arrested for murder.
But now Mira is back in Kipsen to attend Celine’s wedding at the plantation, which has been transformed into a lush vacation resort. Mira hopes to reconnect with her friends, and especially, Jesse, to finally tell him the truth about her feelings and the events of that devastating long-ago day.
But for all its fancy renovations, the Woodsman remains a monument to its oppressive racist history. The bar serves antebellum drinks, entertainments include horrifying reenactments, and the service staff is nearly all black. Yet the darkest elements of the plantation’s past have been carefully erased—rumors that slaves were tortured mercilessly and that ghosts roam the lands, seeking vengeance on the descendants of those who tormented them, which includes most of the wedding guests.
As the weekend unfolds, Mira, Jesse, and Celine are forced to acknowledge their history together, and to save themselves from what is to come.

Part of me really enjoyed the story. Part of me didn‘t me. While it was classified as a “horror/historical fiction I didn‘t find it as scary/gory as a horror but also found it too much in the present day to really be a historical fiction. Overall I really liked the story, I just didn‘t love it. 4 out of 5 stars.

I thought this was going to be more horror ghosts. But totally took a different turn. I really enjoyed the book. It was a good book for being the authors first novel. Looking forward to more works from this author.

This book was a horror novel that‘s for sure. A southern gothic ghost story that takes place on a plantation that the former enslaved people haunt.
There was love and drama and mostly a lot of gross horrific things remembered.

Mira is heading back to the segregated town she left to attend her childhood friend's wedding. However she is not happy that the wedding is being held at a newly renovated plantation, and neither are the ghosts that haunt it. This was kind of slow and redundant in the first part. Took too long to get where it was going, but the haunting scenes were really good/horrific, very powerful. #bhm #horror

This book was honestly so good! The audio was incredible. I‘m usually a 1.3x speed, but for this I listed at the normal 1x speed. It was that good. I was just lost in the voice. *content warning for racism and some serious torture scenes near the end.

I think McQueen has more than decent writing chops. However, I think the the construction of this story needed work. This is about a Black woman named Mira who is going to her white friend, Celine‘s wedding which is being held at a plantation house where all kinds of horrors were done to slaves. McQueen has very valid things to say about allyship and the through line of slavery into the present. The story just didn‘t work for me. Thanks Jenni 👇🏼

Reggie for picking this book and this round of LPMBC. 3y

Thanks for the tags, Cassie and Andrew. I‘m hoping to finish this one up this weekend. Pretty decent so far.

vivastory I finally watched the new Scream. Although it's not my favorite in the franchise, I enjoyed it. As far as the ending... I think it's more of a commentary on toxic fandom than fans of the franchise. Which I can actually get behind that. The way Benioff/Weiss have been relentlessly targeted years after the GOT finale 🙄🙄 3y

When I closed this book, the only word that came to mind was powerful. It made me uncomfortable but in a necessary way. Mira is a Black woman who returns to her hometown for the wedding of her white childhood best friend Celine. Celine's wedding is to take place on a restored "working" plantation. As the ghosts of the past & the slaves tortured on the grounds return. Mira & Celine will confront the past in all of it's horror. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Suet624 Great concept for a story. 3y
FelinesAndFelonies @Suet624 it was unique. I'm glad I read it. 3y

Mira left Kipsen years ago with no intention of returning. When her childhood friend invites her to Celine's wedding, she goes despite misgivings. The wedding is to be held at the recently restored & renovated Woodsman Plantation, now a tourist attraction with antebellum reenactments & mostly black staff. The plantation is also rumored to be haunted by the slaves who were tortured and killed there. A good mix of horror & reckoning with the past.

One of these rounds, I hope to pick a phenomenal book that everyone will love for #LMPBC… but I fear this will not be that round. 😆

I have mixed feelings about this book, but it‘s just mainly not what I had hoped/thought it would be. Between a pick and a so-so for me, but crossing my fingers that it will work for the rest of #GroupH.

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

This book is on the way to you, Karen!

I was not expecting a ghost story. A black woman returns to the home of her youth to attend a white childhood friend‘s plantation wedding. There‘s a lot going on in this book, and there are interesting characters. Some parts were really good and others were a bit of a stretch. Overall, it wasn‘t bad and the ending was not what it seemed at first glance.

Excellent read! I loved the backstory in this book, and although the end wasn't the best, the rest of the read more than makes up for it.

McQueen has well developed characters with complex personalities and a small town full of secrets.

I'd love to read more by this author in the future.

vivastory I've heard great things about this one 3y
