LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE meets GET OUT and THE STEPFORD WIVES in the spectacular new novel from the New York Times bestselling author Chandler Baker. Welcome to the neighbourhood. We do things differently here. Recently, Nora has started to feel that 'having it all' - a family, a soon-to-be-new house, a successful career in law - comes with a price, one her husband doesn't seem to be paying quite so heavily. She loves Hayden, but why is it that, however hard men work, their wives always seem to work that little bit harder? Then her house-hunting takes them to an affluent suburban neighbourhood and Nora's eyes are opened to a new world. One where women can have it all. One where the men actually pull their weight. But a wrongful death case involving one of the local residents draws Nora further into this perfect world and she begins to realise that the secret of 'having it all' is far more complicated than she could ever have imagined. In fact, it's worth killing for...

Loved this smart, feminist thriller. Are these husbands really so enlightened and helpful or is there something less going on here? I saw myself in these pages (uh oh), & with tight, fast paced writing, it was hard to put down. Always fun to read a book set where you live and, while I live in the suburbs, I know these women & their neighborhoods and this book feels quintessentially Austin. The perfect summer read! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Thoroughly enjoyed this one!! Felt immediately endeared to somewhat snarky full-time working Mom, Nora. Caught myself laughing repeatedly and enjoyed the suspense and plot twist. In her note, Chandler Baker says her hope was that this book made mad women cackle everywhere…I may not be mad but it sure made this tired woman cackle!! Well done.

This is a spin on the Stepford Wives, except all of the husbands are perfect... that being said, this book was NOT for me! I could tell that the author was trying to touch on topics like the differences between household role/ parenting styles. That being said, I found myself cringing through most of it. The last 25% ended up being really good and interesting, but couldn't make up for the first 75%

Kind of a slog if I‘m being honest. I didn‘t dislike this but I love The Stepford Wives and this was clearly inspired by that one and that‘s really all you need to know. It‘s that but with a gender twist and the issue of course being the unsung and emotional labour of motherhood. I‘m a firm believer in that, don‘t get me wrong but this wasn‘t for me.

Reading with my number one guy this morning, he is only allowed on the bed with mom on weekends 😀
I had taken out so many library books, I had to make some tough calls, and return a handful unread. This made room for the 4 new ones I got yesterday! I am glad that I gave the tagged a chance, I was a bit in the fence but I‘m about halfway through and enjoying it though it is slightly range inducing at times.

I almost loved this book. Right up until the point where it is revealed that the ideal husband can only exist through hypnotism. And the idea that successful women always have a villainous side to them. Wtf Chandler Baker. This could have been a refreshing look at families who work on themselves and get better. Instead it had a schizophrenic plot twist and a surface burn to feminism.

This is literally the movie Stepford House Wives, but reversed. I was intrigued being a mother myself, I related to soo much of this. But it was soo predictable as to what was going on that it just took a lot away from it. I still did enjoy it, but there was some points in the book I was like get on with it! 3.5 stars

I kept thinking Nora has to be having a vivid pregnancy dream or something, she's too normal, smart for this. This being recruited into the Dynasty Ranch Community: where women are in charge, succeed in their careers and the men are home brainwashed? into domestic life. Fiction, yes, but if we have to add more labels: fantasy, cozy physiological thriller, fractured realities to name a few. Very reverse Stepford Wives that leaves me feeling like I

MaggieCarr was on a psychedelic trip as I finished reading; leaving only the epilogue (which I LOVED!) as a faint glimpse of the bridge to make it back to reality. So much to disect and would make an excellent book club book with so much that could be discussed. 3y

I don‘t want my husband to be a mindless automaton, but I can see the appeal of a partner who just does all the things without being asked, knowing how to sort laundry and planning meals for the week and getting the groceries ordered and picked up. I don‘t even have a high-stress job or kids, yet I‘m often exhausted by work and keeping a house going. How the heck do parents do it? ⬇️

Soubhiville Was it predictable and kind of cliche? Yes, definitely. It‘s 100% Stepford Husbands. I still had a lot of fun reading it, and as long as you aren‘t going in expecting something deep I‘d recommend it. 3y

I had super high expectations for this book, which it didn‘t quite deliver on, though I enjoyed it. I felt like it didn‘t quite know if it wanted to be straight or slightly dystopian and tried to ride between the two, when embracing one or the other would have been better for the story.

What is it worth to have a husband take more of the invisible household labor?

When attorney Nora and her husband Hayden go house hunting, she is drawn to Dynasty Ranch and its cadre of super accomplished women and their husbands who seem to shoulder a lot of household labor…certainly more than Hayden has recently. When the couple starts therapy with a doctor from the neighborhood, Nora begins noticing suspiciously good changes in Hayden… 🤔

WTF! The husband/father in this book (at least to this point) is ridiculously oblivious to how hard his wife works and how much he shoves off on her. Is this what it‘s like?? I‘m childfree.

A lot of you on litsy know how close I am with my dad. He did a lot of my evening care after work - bath time, bedtime, up in the night - every night, so maybe I have a skewed view??

GondorGirl I had the same kind of active father, so I get where you're coming from. It wasn't until I met my partner and started learning about his childhood that I had any real understanding of how shitty parents can be. (I mean, obviously I saw it on the news...) 3y
TrishB I think it‘s as varied as everything else in life 🤷‍♀️ my dad didn‘t do any of that. Hubby got up in the night way more than I ever did. But he‘d never remember PE kits, appointments etc etc. 3y
Tamra Like @TrishB, my dad did next to none that wasn‘t absolutely necessary. My husband is far more involved, but there is a division of labor and mine is more domestic. The stats I think are true, women still bear more of the household duties despite considerably more contribution by husbands/fathers. On the upside, I don‘t do anything outside the house, which includes the camper. 😁 He gets to “dump” tanks and related fun that I won‘t describe.😜 3y
See All 36 Comments
Reviewsbylola This is how it is in my house a lot of the time. Brian is at work before we wake up and doesn‘t get home until 6. When he‘s home he‘s helpful. Sometimes he needs prompting. 😅 I will say though, there‘s a lot of stuff like appointments, schooling (including IEPs, behavior plans, academic plans), and recreation that is draining that all falls on me. I‘m lucky that my husband recognizes the labor that goes into it. 3y
Reviewsbylola My dad was very similar to yours Meg. Like my husband, he was at work until dinner time, but baths were his dominion, and cleaning. He‘s a neat freak and I remember him making our beds every morning and changing our sheets every Wednesday morning before work. My mom always says she would have never had four kids without my dad being so involved. It‘s funny because his dad certainly wasn‘t like that. 3y
eanderson My dad was the same. He was more active in our lives than my mom at times. My husband is very helpful and insists on doing our son‘s nightly routine so I can have some quiet time. He loves his time with Matthew. 😀 3y
ravenlee My dad wasn‘t around much (pilot) and when he was he kept himself pretty separate. He “gave” us kids to our mother 🙄. My husband tries to be involved but he honestly doesn‘t see how much work I do to keep our household/homeschool running. It really is invisible labor. Half the time when he does try, though, it gums up the works and makes everything take longer. 3y
Megabooks @ravenlee that must be incredibly frustrating. It truly is invisible labor. I know there are many things during the day that my mom took care of without him ever knowing. She stayed at home, but I realize that is very deceptive because she managed all my after school activities, cooking dinner, keeping the house clean, etc. all the managing the household. Dad was before school and after dinner, but it was 💯 my mom through the day. 3y
Megabooks @eanderson I love that because I think my dad and I have always enjoyed each other‘s company, and we‘ve weathered all my health problems together. (My mom has never done my doctor‘s appointments/surgeries.) But I‘m really glad dad and I had that childhood foundation when things got rough! I hope it will make him and Matthew close throughout their lives too! 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola my mom was definitely the one doing the school stuff/after school stuff, like you! And my dad was really appreciative like Brian. I think it was helpful that my parents had defined things I could expect from each of them. And your dad sounds great!! I can imagine that four daughters are a handful! (Are you the oldest?) 3y
Megabooks @GondorGirl @TrishB @Tamra @Reviewsbylola @eanderson @ravenlee in writing these replies, I realize I should add that my mother is disabled. Her condition has been progressive through her life. She‘s tough as nails and did and does a tremendous amount, but I think when she and my dad made the decision to have children he knew he‘d have to be more involved. He definitely did all the able-bodied parent things, too, - sports, etc. (edited) 3y
Megabooks @Tamra yikes re: camper!! (Although I went into vet med, so no fear of 💩 here!) I imagine an agreeable division of labor helps, even when it is not 💯 even in some areas. (edited) 3y
Megabooks @TrishB that‘s definitely true. I think one of the things that‘s hard about the book is how upset the wife is and how afraid she is to express that for fear of sounding bitchy or shrill. The lack of communication in the book is every bit as frustrating as the husband himself! 3y
Megabooks @GondorGirl wow! I‘m so sorry about that for him. 💜 I‘m glad you had an active father in your life, though. 3y
ravenlee I think there‘s a lot of thinking that the stay-at-home parent just becomes responsible for everything that‘s “home” while the working parent “goes to work.” But that means the WP has an 8-hour day, give or take, while the SAHP is on duty or on call 24 hours a day. It‘s exhausting. And planning for days when I need to be away (dr appts, my rare gigs) is a job in itself, to cover contingencies for while I‘m away. 3y
Reviewsbylola Yes, I‘m the oldest. My youngest sister was born when I was five, before I even started kindergarten, so they surely had their hands full. I didn‘t completely grasp how hard that had to have been until I had my own kids. 3y
Reviewsbylola Invisible labor is so spot on! And I know my husband gets it to an extent, but unless you‘re living it fully day after day, it‘s hard to truly understand the mental toll. @ravenlee 3y
Megabooks @ravenlee I think it can definitely be that way. I think it also depends upon the family‘s situation. For example, despite the fact my dad had to be up earlier and get me ready for school, I was not to wake my mom in the night. Dad had to be out of town, which was rare. 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I agree in general that the SAHP‘s work doesn‘t have set hours and often is a longer/larger/invisible job. 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola @ravenlee I think also that the WP gets applauded more for their contributions at home even if the total time spent between work and home is less than the SAHP. That‘s possibly what I‘m doing although I think my dad made a larger than average contribution to home/childcare. Certainly more than the character in the book that sparked this conversation!! 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola y‘all were close together!! No wonder your parents had to split things up!! I think not experiencing parenthood made me blind to some things, although I am certainly learning a different set of skills caring for two disabled parents!! That has its own headaches and exhaustions. 3y
TrishB @Hooked_on_books reviewed a book yesterday that discusses this theme! This one sparked a great conversation Meg. 3y
Hooked_on_books Yeah, you should definitely look at Fed Up. This is a real thing socialized into too many men! 3y
BarbaraBB This was a subject that annoyed the hell out of me in The Push. He wanted a child but all responsibilities were for her. Day and night. And he didn‘t realize either. 3y
BarbaraBB Speaking for myself my parents both worked when we were kids and shared the childcare. My mother did more but I remember a loving father. It‘s comparable to how we raise our kids right now, Simon and I both have careers and have shared child care. Simon did way more than my father though, I think really 50/50. Our kids did spend a lot of time in childcare too of which I am in favor, it added a lot their development and social skills (edited) 3y
bthegood When a father refers to watching his own children as babysitting you know you have a problem. Men are starting to take on more responsibilities with children and the household duties, but women still do the majority of the work, even if both parents work outside the home. For the domestic engineer, stay at home parent, it is unpaid labor so not valued as highly by society....need to change the thinking and values😊 3y
Reviewsbylola Honestly I‘ve always felt bad for only children for that reason—I can‘t imagine going through the decline of my parents alone. I remember my mom going through it with her sisters and my dad just recently with his brothers, and it is a huge mental and physical burden for just one person. ♥️♥️ 3y
Megabooks @TrishB @Hooked_on_books nice!! I‘ve gone back and stacked it! Thank you! 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB this book is very similar in that way to TP. It‘s been awhile since I read it and now I remember that focus and being angry with it too! 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB that‘s fantastic that you and Simon share so equally! I do think getting kids out at young ages (for me it was pre-school from age 2-5) helps them develop better social skills. Is childcare free or a fixed cost there? Here it can be very expensive for daycare/preschool, which is ridiculous! It makes me happy that you have fond childhood memories of your dad, too. How are they doing after the move? 3y
Megabooks @bthegood yes, that message is very strong in this book. Both parents have high powered careers, but finding childcare, shopping, doctors appointments, laundry, etc. are falling to the wife. I think that is, unfortunately, very common, which I why the book resonates. Definitely needs a change! 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola it is! We have a lot of only children in my family, but I am the only unpartnered one, so yes, a lot falls on my shoulders. Fortunately both my parents and I have good friends to help out, but it is not the same. 3y
BarbaraBB Childcare is heavily subsidized by the government so that every parent can afford it. Also employers are obliged to share in the costs. However it‘s not free. My parents were a bit confused after the move but now they are getting settled and they seem happy with the new situation. Thank you for asking! 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB that is really good that everyone can afford it. There are a lot things that are beneficial to people and the economy that are not subsidized here (healthcare, childcare, parental leave, etc.). It‘s good that people, employers, the government prioritize that in the Netherlands. I‘m glad your parents are settling in. It is hard to watch them age, but I‘m glad you have them in a good place. 3y
Centique Before we had kids id been really clear that I didn‘t expect to suddenly develop super powers and know what to do with a baby! So we really did do almost everything as a couple, we‘d get each other‘s opinion about everything in those first months which was really comforting to me as it had been a bit of a traumatic birth. I knew I was going back to work & when my daughter was 10 months old I went on an overseas work trip for over 2 weeks ⬇️ 3y
Centique It was something I‘d been dreading leaving her for, but my god, when I got back my hub had done everything. Many of my female friends pushed their husbands away in the first 6 months, not giving them an opportunity to get very involved and I reckon that was a mistake. But yes - I see this division of labour often becoming very unfair and emotional labour/invisible labour being unvalued 3y
Megabooks @Centique yes, I can see how working together in the first few months can be really foundational in being more equal in labor and abilities as the kid grows. I think it‘s fantastic that y‘all had that! But definitely the emotional/invisible labor tends to be very undervalued and misunderstood. 3y

If you can avoid reading the blurb about this book, I would recommend you do so. The less you know the better as the blurb practically gives the entire plot away.
A great, albeit not entirely original concept, the story examines the roles of husbands & wives, child rearing & gender inequality. It started off strong & then took forever to get to where it was going. In the end, because I read the blurb, there were little to no surprises for me.

This is listed as Women‘s Fiction, but I would say there is very much a thriller element as this story unfolds. The story builds through a wonderful crescendo, until we get to peak of this story, that will have you shaking your head in a wonderful way.

There is a lot to unpack with this story and would definitely make for great discussions. A fun ride of a book, that you will not want to put down.

#NetGalley #AudioARC This one started out REALLY strong with excellent observations and witty writing. Unfortunately, it started to really drag in the middle and became a rather campy b-movie farcical tale. Overall a mixed bag of really good parts and really weak parts. Solid 3 stars but audio narration was excellent.

FelinesAndFelonies Oh bummer! I was so looking forward to this one. ☹️ 3y
Cinfhen It had SO MUCH POTENTIAL @FelinesAndFelonies but it sort of fizzled out midway 😕 3y
HOTPock3tt Thanks for the heads up! I removed it from my TBR 3y
Alfoster Oh no! I‘m 57% in and liking it! Maybe won‘t get my hopes up @Cinfhen ! 3y
Cinfhen Oh no!! I hope you find it satisfying @Alfoster It became too gimmicky for me and I thought the characters actions didn‘t add up. The writing was strong and the premise was fun! 3y

#NetGalley #AudioARC Loving this…a spin on Stepford Wives 😜
And I think if you‘re in the throes of raising littles, this book will be especially compelling.
This is a great summer read - I‘m thinking potential for August #BOTM?!?!
