'Totally gripping, original and white hot suspenseful, True Crime Story is a crusher.' Robert Crais 'The most exciting and original crime book you'll read this year' Anna Mazzola 'A work of outstanding and staggering genius' Imran Mahmood 'Pure genius' Jane Casey 'Highly original and mischievous' John Boyne 'Ingeniously executed' Sarah Hilary ______________ 'What happens to those girls who go missing? What happens to the Zoe Nolans of the world?' In the early hours of Saturday 17 December 2011, Zoe Nolan, a nineteen-year-old Manchester University student, walked out of a party taking place in the shared accommodation where she had been living for three months. She was never seen again. Seven years after her disappearance, struggling writer Evelyn Mitchell finds herself drawn into the mystery. Through interviews with Zoe ' s closest friends and family, she begins piecing together what really happened in 2011. But where some versions of events overlap, aligning perfectly with one another, others stand in stark contrast, giving rise to troubling inconsistencies. Shaken by revelations of Zoe ' s secret life, and stalked by a figure from the shadows, Evelyn turns to crime writer Joseph Knox to help make sense of a case where everyone has something to hide. Zoe Nolan may be missing presumed dead, but her story is only just beginning

Finished another #14books14weeks2023 book. This true crime story cleverly inserts Knox into the action which makes you feel like you are reading nonfiction. The story is made up almost entirely of transcribed interviews with the people left behind after a college student goes missing. Fans of true crime podcasts etc would likely eat this up. I found it extremely entertaining. @TheHeartlandBookFairy

After a strong ending in Daisy Darker, I decided to stick with the darker reads (🥸see what I did there-darker/Daisy Darker hah… maybe these night shifts are making my loose my mind a little)

Anyways, I loved all the different editions on this one. #20in4

Well, shucks. You wouldn't think a book made up primarily of interview transcripts could suck you in, but it REALLY did for a while there. I also appreciated how the correspondence sections act as a book club for the reader, speculating on what we've learned so far, where it's going next, and of course teasing new info. It effectively built up three quarters of a blisteringly well-paced and characterized story and then just didn't land. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality Twist not satisfying, ending not satisfying, just more missing and dead women and some plea for how the killer might be "just misunderstood". ?
It appears that my disinterest/distaste for reading true crime as I feel it sensationalizes, or at the very least, presents for the interest of readers, real human misery, partially extends to mystery novels formatted like true crime. Especially with the author inserting himself as a suspect and the stock pictures of real people standing in for murdered characters, really creeped me out. 2/?

Robotswithpersonality This feels more like Jai's tragic story than Zoe's.
I'm grateful that Jai and Kim get happy endings.
I think this reads more like a mystery, but characters' capacity to be nasty to each other, sharpened humour, and ultimate reveals are more like a thriller, and as you may know, I hate those.

I hated it, I loved it, I didn‘t get it, I couldn‘t put it down. Not at all what I was expecting; this scared me to death and made me do some eye rolling at the same time. Everyone was awful, most of them quite probably lying, and it was increasingly compelling. It certainly shakes up the psychological thriller genre (and me, yes I did check under the bed before I turned the light out…)

An interesting take on the crime novel. Joseph knox author, is also a character in what appears to be a true crime narrative, conducted through interviews by a female journalist Evelyn , who is also writing to knox for advice. Complicated yes but as we learn more about the disappearance of a Manchester University student ,Zoe, the twists and turns are compelling. I enjoyed reading a bk that pushes the boundaries of writing form and very readable

Similar to Chasing the Boogeyman in that the author is a character in his true crime novel, but not as successful, in my opinion. It did work well as an audiobook though being multicast and comprised of messages and interviews. Mostly I was kind of annoyed by everyone and didn‘t find the ultimate reveal all that satisfying. Somewhat entertaining, but overall just okay for me.

This was such an interesting, original (at least from what I‘ve read) way to present a mystery/crime drama! The audiobook had a full cast which really helped distinguish the different characters. Listening to interviews of all participants kept me invested. And the reveal was such a surprise to me! I also had to keep checking to make sure this was actually fiction. There are still a few questions left unanswered but overall great! 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫

I loved this book- told in a documentary style, the audio is particularly good. An author sets about to write the book is friend and fellow writer was working on when she is killed. With flashbacks and interviews, the creepy vibes are there. The who of it shocked me, as it was someone who was barely on my radar (but not completely off my radar- everyone is always a potential killer in my book 😆). Great book club discussion!

Daisy Jones & The Six (Reid) × I'll Be Gone In The Dark (McNamara) × The Word Is Death (Horowitz)

Audio format a must!

So detailed and organized it didn't feel like fiction.

Definitely one of the most memorable and unique crime story I‘ve ever read.

The thrilling story of a university student's sudden disappearance, the woman who became obsessed with her case, and the crime writer who uncovered the chilling truth about what happened...

In 2011, Zoe Nolan walked out of her dormitory in Manchester and was never seen or heard from again.

Just remember: Everything you read is fiction.

This is a crime novel written in interview format in which the author actually inserts himself as a fictional character. It was cleverly done and fun to piece together. The characters seemed very realistic.

I really loved this book as it was a story within a story. Two writers delve into a disappearance of a young woman. It's told through newspaper clippings, interviews, emails, and prose.

This was tense novel that really keeps the reader wondering what is real and what is fiction. By inserting himself into the story Joseph Knox broke down the wall between writer and reader that made this book stand out in a category crowded with pretty-girl-in-jeopardy stories. I recommend this one to readers that love both true (and untrue) crime books. Fans of full cast narration should definitely check out the excellent audiobook version 4 stars

Written in the style of a true crime book that unfolds before the reader‘s eyes, this is an addictive & compelling read! The author inserts himself, alongside emails, photographs & transcripts that give this an authentic feel from start to finish! There are moments, like in many real documentaries, where things seem to firmly point in one direction, only to have even more surprising events take place! I couldn‘t put it down! It‘s quite thrilling!

I won this from #Goodreads for an honest review. I'm not sure whats really going on with this novel. But, my understanding is the whole missing person thing is made up. The whole thing is fiction. I'm all for fiction but I couldn't get into this, it made no sense to me. The weirdest book I've ever seen. I didn't finish this because it's annoying. There's bunch of fake interviews, letters, emails.....weird. #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks So an actual author of crime novels wrote a crime novel with himself it in as one of the main protagonists??? 3y

The way the author inserted himself into this work of fiction was truly unique and added an interesting layer to the story. I really enjoyed this novel and liked the way it shed light on the sensationalization of crime by our culture. This is written as transcripts of interviews and switches points of view but it didn‘t distract me.

This was SO good! I‘ve been reading quite a bit of crime fiction recently and this definitely stood out.

It‘s about the disappearance of a missing student and the story is told in a mix of interviews with her friends and family which were conducted by Evelyn Mitchel for a book she was writing, and emails between Evelyn and the author Joseph Knox. (It‘s all fiction)

I was gripped and couldn‘t put it down. Crime fans will love it. Out 16th June.
