This wasn‘t really my kind of book. It was an old-fashioned ghost story set on a remote Scottish island in 1860, so atmospheric for sure, but certainly not scary. Elspeth goes to Skelthsea to be nanny for Mary and finds that there are dark forces at play. Easy read and probably more entertaining for readers who like their ghosts quiet.

This was so good, very gripping, atmospheric and chilling. I love books set in Scotland and on an island too. Elspeth arrives to be a nanny to young Mary who hasn't spoken for months. Mary's twin William died and Elspeth has lots of questions but no answers.

My Bk2 for #20in4 #readathon & Bk16 for #Scarathlon is a Victorian Gothic ghost story set on a small island off Scotland called Skelthsea. Elspeth arrives on the island to be nanny to a small girl after her own tragedies. But the girl turns out to be mute after the death of her twin brother & theres strange sounds coming from the attic. When the whistling starts & she sees people in the mirror she feels a sense of dread. #TeamSlaughter 1pt

I've read books before that have promised an eerie reading experience & not delivered, but this was genuinely chilling at times. The author conveys the strange atmosphere of the house & remote setting of the island well. It's perfect for Halloween reading, & although I was a little disappointed with the ending, overall it was an excellent read. 4🌟

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Penguin Michael Joseph UK, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Cathythoughts Well this sounds good , I‘ll definitely investigate 👍🏻👻 3y
