The Book of Hope
The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times | Douglas Abrams, Jane Goodall
In a world that seems so troubled, how do we hold on to hope? Looking at the headlinesthe worsening climate crisis, a global pandemic, loss of biodiversity, political upheavalit can be hard to feel optimistic. And yet hope has never been more desperately needed. In this urgent book, Jane Goodall, the world's most famous living naturalist, and Douglas Abrams, the internationally bestselling co-author of The Book of Joy, explore through intimate and thought-provoking dialogue one of the most sought after and least understood elements of human nature: hope. In The Book of Hope, Jane focuses on her "Four Reasons for Hope": The Amazing Human Intellect, The Resilience of Nature, The Power of Young People, and The Indomitable Human Spirit. Drawing on decades of work that has helped expand our understanding of what it means to be human and what we all need to do to help build a better world, The Book of Hope touches on vital questions, including: How do we stay hopeful when everything seems hopeless? How do we cultivate hope in our children? What is the relationship between hope and action? Filled with moving and inspirational stories and photographs from Janes remarkable career, The Book of Hope is a deeply personal conversation with one of the most beloved figures in the world today. While discussing the experiences that shaped her discoveries and beliefs, Jane tells the story of how she became a messenger of hope, from living through World War II to her years in Gombe to realizing she had to leave the forest to travel the world in her role as an advocate for environmental justice. And for the first time, she shares her profound revelations about her next, and perhaps final, adventure. The second book in the Global Icons Serieswhich launched with the instant classic The Book of Joy with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond TutuThe Book of Hope is a rare and intimate look not only at the nature of hope but also into the heart and mind of a woman who revolutionized how we view the world around us and has spent a lifetime fighting for our future. There is still hope, and this book will help guide us to it.

I‘m an American, and right now it is not an easy thing to be. I‘m full to the brim with sad and this sounded like the perfect book to read right now. Fam, it wasn‘t great. There is A LOT of toxic positivity and some weird tropes. Just oof.

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

I enjoyed this discussion between famous naturalist Jane Goodall and author Douglas Abrams on the power of hope, how we reconquer it along with trust in our intellect and our capacity for action to create a sustainable world for all species.

I loved this book! Although I have admired the famous naturalist,Jane Goodall for many years, this is the first book of hers that I have read.It is written mostly in an interview format.Douglas Abrams meets Jane at locations around the world, until Covid and then they meet on Zoom. Jane shares many positive stories to encourage the reader to believe we all can make a difference. I did a combo read/listen. Great photos and the power of her voice.

“Hope is often misunderstood. People tend to think that it is simply passive wishful thinking: I hope something will happen but I‘m not going to do anything about it. This is indeed the opposite of real hope, which requires action and engagement.”

Hummm I picked this up due to Rave reviews from the podcast By The Book and though I love Goodall this was not for me.
I didn't like how Abrams write his side of the conversation in first person then had JG answer the questions like they were having a conversation. I also think he mad to book too much about himself, so many stories about his own family.
👇👇👇👇

ChaoticMissAdventures I also think this is a form of subtle Toxic Positivity. If you are not running marathons after loosing a leg or surviving a genocide maybe you just didn't "Hope" enough. It was very off putting. The depends on the next generation to fix things, when over and over again in JG's life people have been saying this was honestly disheartening. I didn't find any hope in this book of hope. 2y

Reading Jane Goodall reminds me of my time in Uganda with the chimps. What amazing creatures 💕 💕 💕💕

DivineDiana Your time in Uganda with the chimps!?! What were you doing? 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @DivineDiana oh..I made that sound much grander than it was! I wasn't working or anything, that would be a dream 😍 I spent a month traveling through the country. Gorgeous place. Got to spend a few days with the chimps, and did a gorilla hike, and a lot of time on safari. 2y

123/150 What an amazing person. I've read many stories about Jane Goodall and her work with chimpanzees, but this really brought her story to life. I liked the format, as if you were listening to two friends have a conversation. Goodall is a wonderfully intelligent, funny, and warm hearted person. 4 🐒🐒🐒🐒 1/2

Drop a pebble start a ripple

I've been thinking since finishing her book, JG is such an inspiration. What she has and is still accomplishing is truly astounding. I've been considering what I can do to make a difference. Starting with reaching out to local groups in my community and on SM to help in their support of people, nature and our environments.

#naturaLitsy

AllDebooks JG states several times that you can't help nature without local people being on board, inspired, interested and supportive. Those in poverty, poor health or lack of education have needs of their own to be met. We need to create a fair society for all, encompassing the human and natural worlds.
My hope is that by encouraging people to learn about nature they can appreciate it more and engage in nurturing it.

This just one long interview/conversation between author and JG around our need for hope, how we attain it, both in ourselves and others. I particularly enjoyed reading about her Roots and Shoots organisation. She is an absolute inspiration and I adore her even more now.

I can listen to Jane Goodall talk and tell stories for hours. Such an amazing woman with such a positive outlook for the future. I don't have the words to describe how much of an inspiration she is and I only hope that more people will listen to what she had to say. Every person makes a difference.

This is such a beautiful book. 💚 It was the read I didn't know I needed.

So often lately I'm apathetic about the state of things around me- politically, environmentally, and just people as a whole some days. Goodall reminded me though that there's goodness out there and that there's still hope as long as we choose to focus on it.

Truly great read for all of us and the audiobook was excellent.

I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone who has felt some anxiety or depression over the current state in the world. Jane's outlook on life is so encouraging and (I can't think of a better word) hopeful for the future. Every individual matters and every person can make a difference. I will be turning back to this book for years to come.

You can‘t give anything less than a pick to Jane Goodall. The audio is a conversation between Jane and Douglas, with both narrating. It‘s a little weird when the text is something like “‘quote from Jane‘, said Jane”, as Jane read her quote and then Douglas chimes in with “said Jane”. Still, I loved hearing about Jane‘s life experiences and why she still has hope for the world in all its chaos. I‘m not so sure, but her positivity is heartwarming.

God what a refreshing book! Leave it to a woman who is 90 and lived through so much and made such an impact on the world to renew my hope. Jane shares stories of her life as a scientist and activist that give her four reasons to have hope for the future. The #audiobook is a very well produced conversation between the two authors.

Jane Goodall is the public figure I admire most. Her grace, gentleness, intelligence and HOPE of course is unsurpassed. This audiobook is an interview between Jane and Douglas Abrams, narrated by both of them as if listeners are there for their personal conversation! I appreciate her strategy of inspiring hope in people that all is not lost. We can come together to turn things around for ourselves, which means taking care of plants and animals.

BookBelle84 I love Jane Goodall and I can't wait to read this one. I went to one of her talks years ago and had the chance to meet her. She is so peaceful and thoughtful, she has been a role model for me since I was little. 3y

Happy Publication Day!! Jane Goodall has been a household name my entire life and so I was especially excited to read this most recent and apropos to the times book. Structured as a conversation between the two authors, the real highlights are in the inspirational and heartwarming stories & anecdotes Goodall shares with the wealth of her 80+ years of remarkable experiences! I wanted a little more substance as this was a lighter read than expected.
