What Was Mine
What Was Mine: A Novel | Helen Klein Ross
Simply told but deeply affecting, in the bestselling tradition of Alice McDermott and Tom Perrotta, this urgent novel unravels the heartrending yet unsentimental tale of a woman who kidnaps a baby in a superstoreand gets away with it for twenty-one years.Lucy Wakefield is a seemingly ordinary woman who does something extraordinary in a desperate moment: she takes a baby girl from a shopping cart and raises her as her own. Its a secret she manages to keep for over two decadesfrom her daughter, the babysitter who helped raise her, family, coworkers, and friends. When Lucys now-grown daughter Mia discovers the devastating truth of her origins, she is overwhelmed by confusion and anger and determines not to speak again to the mother who raised her. She reaches out to her birth mother for a tearful reunion, and Lucy is forced to flee to China to avoid prosecution. What follows is a ripple effect that alters the lives of many and challenges our understanding of the very meaning of motherhood. Author Helen Klein Ross, whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, weaves a powerful story of upheaval and resilience told from the alternating perspectives of Lucy, Mia, Mias birth mother, and others intimately involved in the kidnapping. What Was Mine is a compelling tale of motherhood and loss, of grief and hope, and the life-shattering effects of a single, irrevocable moment.

Getting back into the swing of reading lately! I‘ve been busy setting up shop + filling orders… but I was able to listen to my audiobooks while making my nail sets. The bottom three books are still in progress but I finished the other 7! Howls Moving Castle was my favourite, but Defending Jacob and Well Met were also fantastic ❤️ Thanks for the little push @Andrew65 I‘m so happy I was able to get through some books!

Andrew65 Brilliant, thanks for playing along 👏👏👏🙌🥳😍 3y
MyNamesParadise I loved Defending Jacob! Have you seen the limited series on Apple TV+ ? 3y

Lucy wants a baby so badly that when she sees the little Natalie sitting alone in the blue shopping cart of a popular store, she picks her up and leaves the store as if the baby were hers. #kidnapping #multipleperspectives #motherhood #helenkleinross

I really enjoyed this book but I must say, the ending was so abrupt that I kept flipping through the acknowledgments wondering where the rest was. How did it end like that?! Like there were at least 20 pages left?! I feel like I have emotional whiplash that will never be resolved. I really enjoyed the book and want to give it a pick very badly but because of this ending I will give it a So-so

What to do when I wake up at 3:30 and can't get back to sleep? Move to the couch so I don't wake the hubby, and finish my book. Lucy steals a baby left unattended and gets away with it for 21 years. What's a girl to do when she's raised by a mother that loves her while another mother desperately wishes for her return. Which one is "home" to her?

A quick moving story of a baby kidnapped at 4 months of age. The story is told thru cleverly written vignettes by characters essential to the plot. I couldn‘t put this down. P. 329 “When you forgive, the prisoner you set free is yourself.”

This book was really great. I felt nervous listening when the truth comes out of what Lucy had done but then I had conflicting feelings about how Lucy was treated. Yes she kidnapped a baby which makes her absolutely the worst but then it‘s like well she raised that baby and provided her with everything possible in life. So it then became difficult to hate her. The audio was great, the story was great. I definitely recommend it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I thought the storyline of this book had a lot of potential, but it just didn't have enough momentum for me. I almost bailed halfway through, but decided to stick it out.

This was a so-so book. I had such high hopes for it but the ending totally killed it. It just ends - no big ending, no happily ever after or tragedy, nothing. It leaves you thinking, “That‘s it??!!!” I can think of a million better ways to end this book!!

I love the way that this book had alternating perspectives. This story details that kidnapping of a baby from an IKEA store. I enjoyed the way that it was told in past tense and gave everyone's perspective. Interesting.

???? Cheers! A definite page turner! In efforts not to spoil the book for other readers, What Was Mine gave me just the amount of crazy and WTH's that I enjoy when reading a book of this nature. Although the subject matter is any parents worst nightmare, I thoroughly enjoyed how the author somehow made me as a reader feel empathy for Lucy.  My emotions were all over the place which is the recipe for a good read for me. #spinesvines

This month's selection for my #bookclub but I bailed in frustration. Since I'm a completist, I might come back and pick it up later, but right now I just can't even. The meeting is tonight, but I'll probably stay home and watch Rocky Horror. #timewarp

I'd give What Was Mine ⭐️⭐️⭐️ & 1/2 ⭐️'s. It wrapped up too neatly, left me wanting more rage and raw emotions. It was a quick read, I liked it, but I felt I wanted more...more intensity. If my baby was taken from a shopping cart, I'd be a raving lunatic....I don't know that yoga & throwing rocks in the ocean would help me....too neatly tied up for me.

A point of view smorgasbord! Ross impressively leads the reader to feel empathy for the villain. A page-turner that leaves you wanting more! The kind of novel that never lets you forget it's story or characters long after you turn the last page.
