Strange Fruit, Volume I: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History
Strange Fruit, Volume I: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History | Joel Christian Gill
13 posts | 10 read | 15 to read
"Strange Fruit Volume I" is a collection of stories from early African American history that represent the oddity of success in the face of great adversity. Each of the nine illustrated chapters chronicles an uncelebrated African American hero or event. From the adventures of lawman Bass Reeves, to Henry Box Brown s daring escape from slavery."

Yesterday I was on my feet most of the day cleaning, running errands, voting, and surpassing 13K steps. So today is for finishing library books, snacks, laundry, and this puzzle I found at the dollar store. #BFC #BFCr4 #NFNov

Bookwormjillk Voting got me a surprising number of steps. Win/win! 4y

Jim Crow is one bird that shouldn‘t have been fed.

I had another book chosen for #MusicalNewYear #FeedtheBirds. But this just came up in my reading #blackhistory. It‘s a powerful illustration.

Graphic novel about some groundbreaking African-Americans who have been forgotten by history. Good intro. Should have explained what Jim Crow laws were. Hard to get a lot of historical data on the individuals because they wouldn't have been written about during their time.

Due to some of the subject matter, this is for older middle grade and younger YA.

Sace I had to have this. Hooray for one-click! 6y
mrozzz Intriguing. 6y
youngreadrshelf @RestlessFickleBookHoarder @mrozzz it was very good. Just not something I could put in my classroom so I gave it to our middle school. 6y

Despite the shaky start to this graphic novel I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. The art and flow of each story takes a little bit to find it's ground but once it does it really moves along nicely. It is written for a younger audience (upper middle grade & young adult), but it's great for adults as well.

A sampling of some of the art from Strange Fruit.
Some of the earlier stories seemed sort of rushed but this second have seems to have found a flow that works a bit better.

Started this one and so far it's pretty decent. I'm not a fan of the art or the fact that there are definitions included, but it's supposed to be for a younger audience so I think it sort works well for that.

TheNextBook I've seen mixed reviews regarding this. I've only seen bits and pieces of the artwork. Anxious to see what you think 7y

Another accidentally library haul 😅 I only intended to pick up my holds and possible one other book, BUT the book I'm looking for is currently in a closed off section due to my library's impending move. So I panicked and grabbed others.

I had heard of a few of the people featured, but I still learned a lot from this collection of graphic short stories. It's sad that a few of them have abrupt endings or scant details because there is very little documentation about some of their lives. I look forward to future volumes, for sure.

Ellsbeth This is a great book and I love the art. 8y
