Katya deals in Authenticities and Captures, trading on nostalgia for a past long gone. Her clients are rich and they demand items and experiences with only the finest verifiable provenance. Other peoples lives have value, after all.But when her A.I. suddenly stops whispering in her ear she finds herself cut off from the grid and loses communication with the rest of the world. The man who stepped out of the trees while hunting deer cut her off from the cloud, took her A.I. and made her his unwilling guest. There are no Authenticities or Captures to prove Katyas story of what happened in the forest. Youll just have to believe her.

TOR releases lots of cool novellas, and I found this retired library book at Recycled Reads.

Katya finds antiques to sell to her clients. On a trip to get a 1918 typewriter and an old dictionary, she comes across some deer and witnesses one getting shot. The Hunter takes her hostage.

A quick read, with AI and nanobots and advanced technology, but it takes place in the woods without access to most of that. Cool little book.

🎧 This is a short story in METAtropolis (3/3).

Katya deals in things of the past. She finds and sells them. One day while deer are crossing the road she meets a stranger named Johnny in the woods. Or did she? The story has an open-ended ending,

The writing was good but overly detailed. A mysterious, atmospheric, short, sci-fi story.

Good narration.

Finding and purchasing long forgotten items from society‘s past is a job that Katya loves. While trying to get back in time for her train, she finds herself stuck waiting for a herd of deer. This moment though costs her dearly and forces her off the grid, out of connection with society, and in the path of someone she desperately wishes she didn‘t encounter. Now she‘s typing up her story but she doesn‘t know how to get anyone to believe her.

Impulse pick at the library again, and frankly it wasn‘t all that great. It‘s 85 pages long and didn‘t get really interesting until 40ish pages in. And then the end didn‘t really conclude or explain anything. It had some thought provoking moments but overall was just kind of bland.

I picked this because I was excited to read Kowal‘s Hugo winner (The Calculating Stars: A Lady Astronaut Novel) and I figured that the queue at the library would be months long; I wanted to try a book of hers. I‘m glad I did. It‘s a fun story delivered in very few pages. BTW, anyone have a report on The Calculating Stars?

The first in the library stack has already been read! This was a really interesting little sci fi story. But I was left with a lot of questions.

There‘s a lot packed into this story for how short it is. The central theme is, I think, about how technology affects the human experience, which is a big topic but this never feels didactic. The story hums along, the prose very well-crafted, with a lot of nice little touches that speak to another of its themes: authenticity. I liked it. Made me think a lot, afterwards.

DrexEdit I've read some of her short stories. I quite like her writing! 6y
sakeriver @DrexEdit I‘ve read the first of her Glamourist Histories novels, SHADES OF MILK AND HONEY, and liked it quite a bit. 6y

Argo bookstore still exists! This (with The Word, which I don't know if it's still open) is a great Anglophone used bookstore in Montréal. They we're bought by new people last year and it's now a clean hole in the wall. On Sainte-Catherine. I bought two things, tagged and Gilman's Herland.

A short story set in a science fiction setting of a future world where everything is attached to a network. The main character is a kidnapping victim who collects antiques and authentic things and resells them, she was taken for 3 days, or off the network for 3 days. She‘s typing out her experience on an old typewriter for a client and trying to explain the disappearance of deer in the area. It was odd, I don‘t know the end game but I enjoyed it.

I totally forgot to post this on the 9th, so here is my belated #quickreads post for #anditsaugust . I've been really into novellas lately, as it's a fun way to sample an author's work and also tends to work well during readathons, so here are some novellas I'd recommend! @RealLifeReading

I read this one cover to cover this afternoon. It is a strange little novella that explores a big theme, the fallibility of memory vs remembering with the aid of technology. Which is the real experience? What "really" happened to Katya out in the woods? It was unique with an interesting format for the narrative.

At my Soon-To-Be Sister in Law's bachelorette party a few of us actually brought books along "just in case," including myself. Needless to say we're all Wild gang.

Reviewsbylola I took a couple books to @emilyhaldi 's bachelorette getaway! We were there three days and I woke up at least two hours before everyone else so I had more reading time than I expected! 7y

Interesting short story. It makes you ponder some things like, Is it dangerous to get to dependent on technology? And if we are so connected all the time, does it take away our ability to use our mind and senses?

What happens when the AI you count on to record your memories is disconnected? Loved this novella and the implications it poses for the future. 🙌 #artificial intelligence #aprilbookshowers

Lacythebookworm @LauraBrook No, this was my first. The Glamourist Histories don't sound like they're in my wheelhouse, but I might try Ghost Talkers. 📚😊 7y

I've recently discovered a love for short stories and novellas, and this quick little read did not disappoint! In a future where we're always connected, how much can we trust our own memories? I'll be thinking about this one for a while 🤔

An interesting and mysterious little science fiction novella set in a future where we are constantly connected to AI and social media, and what happens when a woman's connection is severed for a brief period in the woods. Really liked how it ended.

Great little book about technology and memory. The kind of technology described seemed so plausible for a near-future setting. It also made me appreciate more than usual the feel of the books in my library and the beauty of the deer that wandered into my yard today.

Wow. Not sure what I was expecting, but this slim little book sure packs a wallop. I won't spoil anything here, just say that if this looks even slightly intriguing to you, pick it up and enjoy the hour or so it takes to read. Wonderful stuff! My first Kowal and nowhere near my last.

[DELETED] 3216391035 I'm intrigued.... 8y
LauraBrook @Basia At 80-some pages, you should check it out! My library has this shelved under SF (which is both SF and Fantasy), and it seems to fit that pretty well (though I'm a newbie to the genre, so what do I know). 8y
[DELETED] 3216391035 @LauraBrook just requested from the library! (& btw, given the library tag in your pic, we share a library system!) 8y

This book is an account of an abduction, but so far, it's really about a future with an extremely-evolved Internet; how easily we come to rely on technology (*cough, cough* Google) and distrust our own memories.
