Got this one from a little free library. I‘ve already read a few other novels by Harris e.g., Pompeij and did not get disappointed. I read this one in two days because it was so exciting. This novel definitely shows that ambition sometimes lies deep in ourselves concealed even from our own feelings and crawling its way out without us realizing.

Haven‘t watched the movie yet because I wanted to read the book first. And I have to say so far, Robert Harris never disappoints. I cannot put it away.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Oooh… this was fun. All the rumors, gossip, and palace intrigue of the Cardinals‘ selection of a new pope, with the front runners changing as new information comes to light about things from their past. I only heard of it when Stanley Tucci talked about filming the movie in his latest book, but this was a fun pick!

Conclave just eeks out Woodworking, but it was very close! And How to Write Crime Fiction is my other wild card.

I think I am like a lot of people, I wanted to read Conclave because the Catholic Church just went through one. Even though this is fiction, I found it quite interesting. I learned quite a bit. It did make me wonder if, in this past conclave, there was as much political wrangling. I never thought that the bishops would or could be so ambitious. I read the acknowledgments, and it seems to me Harris really researched the ⬇️

I was not going to read this, however coffee friends raved on and on about it and one handed me a copy. Took me a while to get into it and must admit I skipped read a lot. Author must be smiling. A very timely novel. Interesting ending. A quick read especially if you read like me. 😊.

Good. Follows the story of how a pope is elected. Full of twists and turns especially the one at the end that I didn't see coming.

Quirk of fate that this became available in my library hold list late last week. I, of course, read it right away. It‘s not a great novel, but it kept my interest. I do wish that the big plot twist had been more of a surprise; Harris is a bit heavy handed with the clues. I did enjoy the details about both the titular event, and the descriptions of the setting. I can see how it was attractive as a movie plot, although I haven‘t seen it yet.

I‘ve always been fascinated by the election of a pope. I get this book is fiction, but dang you sure don‘t get to cardinal status by being a meek/humble parish priest. When I think about the billionaires buying themselves a POTUS this book makes me wonder what shady things could be happening now for politics to underwrite some cardinal votes. 👇

So this seemed timely, and I thought it was fascinating. I've read that the details are accurate as to what happens in a conclave, and the author includes a bibliography at the end. I enjoyed the insiders' view, and the plot twists and turns kept me guessing. I'll have to watch the movie next!

3.75. A page-turner. Read for movie/book club.

Just back from a road trip with some bush walking, bookshop browsing and great food and coffee at country cafe‘s. It‘s been extremely wet in northern NSW and rivers are flooded and paddocks are green.
My recent reads include Rapture, Dusk and Time of the Child. I‘m really enjoying Conclave which takes you behind the scenes at the Vatican to elect a new Pope. The movie was excellent also.
PS this is the wonderfully quirky Ulmurra bookshop!!

I was a solid meh until that ending. Now I‘m going to have to watch the movie, too.

I had higher hopes. Interesting beginning, but I found the middle to drag. But that ENDING! Worth it for the end alone, which totally took me by surprise. Now I want to watch the movie.

For me, this is one of the rare instances when the film was better than the book. The film was more intense from minute 1 and you can‘t beat the gorgeous cinematography & acting which made it so visually appealing and compelling.

watched the movie and then read the book. very enjoyable and quick read.

Finally well enough to read again. Bought this one at Christmas, when I saw a trailer for the movie. I really enjoyed the book, the intrigue, the setting. The end was absolutely ludicrous and felt contrived.

This is seriously getting tense now!

This ended up being a letdown for me after very much enjoying most of the book. I won‘t go into why. It‘s worth reading to form your own opinion. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Absolutely love this!!!! Edited to add, I like it so far particularly because I am Catholic. I‘m not surprised by the evilness. It‘s expected. (In no way, starting a religious discussion. Just sharing my viewpoint for others who might need the info)

Loved the movie! Beautiful cinematography and fabulous acting. I‘m going to try the novel, hopefully the audio version.

Read in 2020. Robert Harris is becoming a favorite of mine. I've read three of his novels now. Each is completely different from the other. I would rate them in this order: 1) Pompeii, 2) Conclave, 3) The Fear Index.

An interesting read and mystery to unpick. Another win by Harris

This was much more interesting to me than I expected it to be (I am not Catholic, nor even religious). Because I listened to the audio, it did take a bit at the start to get “into” it, but once it got going, it was pretty good. There is quite the twist at the end!

Great political thriller based around the pope

Such a sensitive examination of leadership, vocation, faith and ambition.

Conclave by its nature is not action packed in a traditional sense. Much of the book is quiet dialogue between elderly men sitting in a room, locked away from the world. What it is however is a fascinating view of how the conclave process works and an interesting take on power, honesty and faith. It was well paced for an easy read that was quick to consume yet thought provoking read.

Although the book was interesting from the position of how Conclave works when choosing a new Pope, I wouldn‘t classify it as a thriller. Nothing really happens. I was expecting murder, intrigue, skulduggery. Where are the Borgias when you need them? Rating: 2 ⭐️
