pickAnn Cleeves has rock solid craftsmanship. This was a very satisfying and well executed read. But where as the Vera books are often A's for me, I would rate this as a B. I think it is really interesting to have a character who is recovering from a intensely religious childhood and being shunned as a young adult. But he simply doesn't have the vividness of Vera. Still went on to read and enjoy the next two books in the series.
pickMy first Ann Cleeves mystery. I liked the remote island and the storm as backdrop for the story. I didn‘t guess who did it but found the ending of who and why a bit far-fetched. Overall, it works as a crime novel,especially now that fall is here -island,storm,rain- and I really liked the detective, Matthew Venn. It‘s definitely an entertaining story and great main character.

pickThe previous story of the railway detective I found disappointing. I also found this book slow and labouring at the start, it was as if the author had lost his way. Gone was the exciting openings I had associated with the books in this series. The slow start was hiding, what turned out to be a really interesting case with some exciting moments. Although it was obvious where the diary and cash was hidden the ending was more than satisfactory.
pickI have watched all the TV shows based on Ann Cleeves‘ detective series but I haven‘t read many of them. With this newer series I‘ve stayed caught up with their releases. I enjoy the recurring characters in this series, especially the main detective. You get a lot of their background and inner thoughts. The setting is also well done, and plays a role in the mystery.
