Mehso-so

My rating of this book has more to do with my expectations of the book than the book itself.

I thought this would be a Christmas book, but the only thing remotely Christmassy about the book is the title and that a man comes home to put on the Oratorio before Christmas.

Other than that this is more a family saga. Solveig wants to put up the Christmas oratorio, but dies in a cycle accident. Then we follow her husband and children and their lives.

Librarybelle That‘s a pretty cover! 1y

Andrew65 Often the way, presented as Christmas books but have very little if anything to do with Christmas ☃️☃️☃️ (edited) 1y
AnneCecilie @Andrew65 I don‘t demand that a Christmas book necessarily is set during Christmas, but it should a least be cozy if it‘s not. Apart from the title, I don‘t think Christmas is mentioned at all and it‘s definitely not set during Christmas. And for me at last there‘s nothing cozy about a family as dysfunctional as this one. 1y
Andrew65 @AnneCecilie Yes, definitely doesn‘t have a feel of a Christmas book. 1y

Fourth book finished for #NovelNovember. @Andrew65

I enjoyed this suspenseful ghost story set in a haunted house. It feels very much like a classic gothic story from the 19th century, though it was written in 1983.

Academic gossiping! I didn‘t know I‘d enjoy that but I did. Three academics fight about who knows best what Freud meant and thought. I learned a lot about Freud‘s early seduction theory, which he abandoned in favor of a theory of infantile sexuality. It‘s fascinating to read about the different interpretations and opinions of the three academics. And the author‘s role in all of this. What a great choice @merelybookish for the #NYRBBookClub

AshleyHoss820 This actually sounds really fun! 2y
merelybookish I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It's surprisingly entertaining. And nice that it ticked off a few reading prompts for you too! 2y

BarbaraBB @AshleyHoss820 It is! It‘s intellectual hysterical, it‘s about conflicting male ego‘s, it made me chuckle more than once! 2y
AshleyHoss820 @BarbaraBB Oh my gosh, totally gonna have to stack it, then! ☺️ 2y
BarbaraBB @merelybookish I really did and am so curious where our discussion will lead to. I don‘t know that much about Freud, only what I read about him in fiction books. So I am looking forward to see what you all will think! 2y
BarbaraBB @AshleyHoss820 I think you have to 😊 2y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB I was thinking about that and how our assumptions about Freud (and psychoanalysis) today might differ from when it was written in the 80s. 2y
BarbaraBB @merelybookish They might indeed. I‘d say his theories are controversial to say the least but again, I don‘t know much about psychotherapy. Interesting! 2y
Librarybelle Sounds interesting! 2y
readordierachel Oh yay! I'm looking forward to this 2y

These essays, originally published in 1983 are still relevant and insightful. favorites include how periods would be seen if men menstruated and not women and would be seen as a sign of strength and virility. Also loved the classic essay about her time undercover as a playboy bunny. Found the one about women becoming more radical as they age to be thought-provoking as well. #40thbdaychallenge #1983

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Crazeedi I wish I could take credit, but all the credit goes to @Marchpane who thought up this great idea and shared it with us here on Litsy. 6y
Crazeedi @Riveted_Reader_Melissa is it too late to jump in? When did this start? I could look back to start date and see what books I've read 6y

CoffeeNBooks What a cool idea! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Crazeedi When I started and asked the same question, she said it started as soon as you join, and count from then. But it‘s really independent, so if you want to go back to the beginning of this year, go for it. 6y
JazzFeathers Wow! You're making such good progress 😄 6y
DreesReads It‘s filling in! Have you heard from @Marchpane lately? 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AudreyMorris No, I haven‘t. But I‘m hoping she‘ll be back eventually. But it has been quite awhile. 6y
