I loved the character studies of each of the women, and could have spent more time in their complicated lives..... 3y

KarenUK And even with all his flaws, I ended up rooting for Bennet, in all his cluelessness and ineptitude! A story of love, loneliness, art and finding renewed inspiration in work and life. I was really charmed by this simple, contemporary novel. Nothing much happens, but I enjoyed the ride. Funny, poignant and perceptive. 3y

This just didn‘t work for me. It felt disjointed and aimless. I did like the 2 female characters but I did not care for Edgar‘s storyline nor that of the mystical spirit. I‘m disappointed that this was the inaugural choice for Roxane Gay‘s bookclub. I‘ve started this book SO MANY TIMES but was never able to stick with it. Today, I picked it up and literally couldn‘t put it down. It‘s probably a niche read, but the story of the last Kurdish Jews was ABSOLUTELY riveting to me. When the First Temple was destroyed in 587 BCE, a group of Jewish exiles fled to the mountains of now Iraq and remained there for the next 2500 years!!! The author‘s father was the last remaining Jew to have his👇🏽

Cinfhen Bar Mitzvah in Zahko. In 1953 Iraq threw all its Jews out of the country and many immigrated to Israel, the land they had been banished from centuries earlier. Once arriving in Israel, the Kurdish Jews found themselves shunned & ridiculed as their European counterparts found them ignorant, uneducated mountain people. 👇🏽 3y

#LitLite Evocative and whimsical/ set in 1930‘s #Malaysia while still a British colony. There‘s mystery and romance and a touch of Chinese mythicism. Audio was wonderful. A bit melodramatic at times but still enormously engaging. #ReadingAsia21 #Pop21 #AdvancedPrompt

Cinfhen I‘m a little disappointed with this one @SamAnne I think my expectations were too high 😢I still have about 5.5 hours of audio left....so maybe it‘ll turn around for me. It is hard to put down, though!!! 3y

SamAnne @Cinfhen I had issues with the book as well. Some of the magic realism didn‘t work for me, and the Christian themes wore on me. The unprobable events. But I still couldn‘t put it down! 3y

Ruthiella I thought this was gimmicky. I would have preferred a more straightforward story. There is a scene where everyone starts “kung fu” fighting in a courtroom which was awesome, however. And it‘s quick read. 3y
