This book is a horror story! Well, not literally...but as a Native American reader, this is a horror story... especially with the current political climate.

The prejudice that Anequs faces is INFURIATING. This is a reimagined world, yet the prejudice echoes from my ancestral history...and now the reality we are all facing today.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal Like I recently commented about...I grew up witnessing my mom experience several levels of prejudice. Something she has dealt with all her life.

Personally, I have dealt with racist who are so sly it's scary because the racism is not easily noticable.

Now, my mom and I both are experiencing blunt prejudice every time we step out and about.

AnnCrystal I knew that the prejudice of the past remained alive, just not at these widespread, intense levels. I can now imagine the unjust prejudice returning to the levels described in this book...

This story does well in highlighting the ignorance of racism...but it is still unsettling.

Aside from the racism, I am truly enjoying the story.

AnnCrystal On page 245 of 511. This is chronicling the journey of Anequs and Kasaqua as they venture to Dragon school and enter Anglish society. While I'm finding this entertaining, some may find the storyline tedious because the structure is a bit like a diary of events told from Anequs' prospective.

AnnCrystal There are a nice diversity of characters (brown, black, and white). There is even a disabled professor, and an autistic classmate.

julieclair Good progress on the chunkster! But I hate to hear that you are experiencing any prejudice, let alone more prejudice than in past years. So so sad. What is wrong with people, that they feel they have to act this way? Sending hugs. 💝 1d
AnnCrystal Thank You 😘 @julieclair You're so sweet and kind 🫂💝💝💝. Kindness like yours always shines brighter than the hatred ✊🏼☺️💖💖💖. 1d

This Viking ruled world continues to feel more English than Nordic or Scottish?? Perhaps this rule comes from the Normans?? I'm enjoying this nonetheless 🐉📚💝. On Page 81

When I'm freaking out about reality, and my current read takes me to the one magical place that always feels safe and cozy...a bookstore 📚💝.

My previous book review was long because I didn't keep up with my posts as I read...I will try to do better.

Not thrilled about the threat to Kasaqua's life if Anequs fails.

I expected a world ruled by Vikings to be a little different...

Loving the steampunk vibes!

Mark Twain | Ron Chernow
post image

What a fantastic evening! My family went to hear Ron Chernow being interviewed about the writing of his biography of Mark Twain at the Mark Twain House in Hartford. The sold out venue was a Congregational Church nearby. That picture of Mark Twain on a stick is a hand fan they gave out to the audience because like most old churches, it was not air conditioned.Very creative & community building I thought!
The book is 1030 pages plus appendices.

4.25/5⭐️

The one where things start to get dark.

I may not have finished this in February, but it was my February #BookSpin.

@TheAromaofBooks

Bonus: it works for #allergictochunksters and is a petite chunkster for the #chunksterchallenge

I‘ve had this on my shelf for a long time & I‘d really love to tackle it this year! Is anyone interested in a buddy read?

It‘s a trilogy of historical novels set in 14th-c. Norway, originally published in 1920, 1921, & 1922. These would work well for anyone finishing the #192025 challenge this year! I‘m planning to use the first 2 books for 1920 & 1921.

I was thinking May—July or June—August, one book per month. Comment if you‘re interested!

Ruthiella I would be interested! I have an ebook copy and have been meaning to read it for a while now. 5mo
Deblovestoread I‘d be interested! It is such a chunkster I‘m not sure I could do a book a month but I‘m willing to try 😂 5mo
Andrea313 I'd give it a try starting in June! 5mo

Daisey I also have this on my TBR and have been thinking I need a readalong to get me started on it. I‘d probably prefer starting in June to work better around some other long reads I hope to fit in. 5mo
quietjenn Yes! I was just thinking of this today, oddly enough. 5mo
Librarybelle I‘d be interested! 5mo
LeahBergen It‘s so good! 5mo
lauraisntwilder Yes! This has literally been on my nightstand for over a year. 5mo
MeganAnn I finished book 1 at the beginning of the year and have plans to eventually tackle the rest of the book before the end of the year. I‘d love to join in for books 2 & 3 when you get to them. Book 1 was very good. 5mo
MaureenMc I‘m interested! Been meaning to read this one for a while. 5mo
Amiable This was my #chunksterchallenge read a few years ago! 5mo
Gleefulreader I‘d be interested! 5mo
AmyG I have read the first 2…and need to read the third. I‘d love to join in. 5mo
BarbaraJean @Ruthiella @Andrea313 @Daisey @quietjenn @Librarybelle @lauraisntwilder @MaureenMc @Gleefulreader 🎉Yay! We‘ll start in June, then! I‘m thinking one general discussion/book & probably a few other posts along the way. @Deblovestoread It should work out to just under 100 pages/week—that sounds maybe doable 😂 @MeganAnn @AmyG Would love to have you join! I can tag you once we get to your non-read books, or for the whole thing, whichever you prefer. (edited) 5mo
Librarybelle Sounds good to me! 5mo
BarbaraJean @LeahBergen @Amiable I‘ve heard such good things about it for so long—it‘s time to finally read it! 5mo
Amiable @BarbaraJean I mean … it‘s better than “Clarissa.” 😖😀 5mo
BarbaraJean @Amiable 😂😂That‘s definitely “damning with faint praise”!! One of my college professors (who‘s a medievalist) highly recommended it and her taste *usually* aligns with mine—we‘ll see! 5mo
Amiable @BarbaraJean There was a long stretch in the middle that I had to push myself through. And some of the main character‘s choices irritated me. But I would definitely recommend it as a worthwhile read. (edited) 5mo
Ruthiella Awesome! 👍 5mo
BarbaraJean @Amiable Makes sense, and it's good to know that the middle might end up being a bit of a slog. Glad to hear you found it worthwhile overall! 5mo
staci.reads I may be interested. It's been on my tbr for a long time. 5mo
BarbaraJean @staci.reads I'll tag you when we get closer to June and you can let me know if you want to join! 5mo
julieclair I‘d love to join! I read the first book many years ago and loved it, so a reread would be nice. And I‘ve always wanted to read books 2 & 3. 5mo
BarbaraJean @julieclair Yay! I'll add you to the list! 5mo

3/5 stars for this “Barely a Bitsy” (just made it !) level in #ChunksterChallenge2025. I liked it well enough. I did. It just seemed … bloated. The action takes place over a 14-day period and it felt like I was reading every minute in real time. I did enjoy the descriptions of the Tudor period, though. Perhaps I‘ll pick up a nonfiction history of the era next. I‘ll probably continue with the series, but I‘m not in a hurry to do so.

Cuilin Perfect description, I‘m halfway and only a few days have passed. 5mo

Pickpick

Completed the Chunkster level for #ChunksterChallenge2025. I‘d give it a pick because it is a story well told (and well translated, if you get the P+V version). I wouldn‘t say it‘s the “greatest novel of all time,” as some reviews call it. It does provide an interesting historical context of its time. And now I can finally check it off my list. ✔️

monalyisha I *loved* this when I read it. But that was over 15 years ago! If I remember correctly, I may have even mentioned Levin in my internet dating profile (something about a “sweaty, lean farmer with metaphysical concerns”?). 😅🥵 6mo
Amiable @monalyisha If I were going to pick a sweaty Russian out of the bunch, it would definitely be Levin! 😄 And I also loved Kitty. Anna, not so much. I actually felt sorry for Karenin. Stiva and Vronsky were basically Russian frat boys -- ugh. 6mo
CoverToCoverGirl Congratulations! 🎉 I have attempted this book several times but could never get past the first handful of chapters. 6mo
Amiable @CoverToCoverGirl The fact that the chapters are all pretty short is basically what propelled me through some of the sections, I'm not gonna lie. 😃 I could read two chapters (i.e. 5 pages) and feel like I'd accomplished something for the day. 6mo
willaful Liking Levin is pretty much all I remember from this book. 😂 6mo
