In case you missed the #EoE readalong earlier in the year, it‘s a #Kindledeal today. Also, I am *very* late in passing along this DVD so kindly sent to me by @UwannaPublishme 🙁 I‘d be happy to mail it on to any Litten who wants to see it. Just leave a comment if you‘re interested.

#JulyWrapUp #JulyRecap
A little late in putting this together but it was a crazy week & month really. Still, with the #24by48 #readathon pushing me along with my library‘s summer reading program, I read or listened to 16 books in July. The tagged was my favorite. I had 3 non-fiction, 13 fiction, 2 audiobooks, 13 female authors & 3 males, & about 1/2 of East of Eden for the #EoE #buddyread. I‘d say it was an excellent reading month for me. 🎉📚🎉

Crazeedi Excellent!!👏👏 5y
DivineDiana 👏🏻📚👏🏻 5y

Look at the great #litsymail that just arrived from @UwannaPublishme 😍 I‘m dying to watch the Jane Seymour version of #EoE and compare it with the James Dean movie. The vintage book is gorgeous, as is the bookmark peeking out of Travels With Charley. And for those of you unfamiliar with Dark Shadows (see card in upper right), Angelique is the evil witch—though maybe not quite as evil as Cathy. 😂 Thanks so much, Donna!

MemoirsForMe Yay! Glad the package arrived in record time and made you smile. Ha! Yes, Angelique and Cathy could certainly be sisters. 😂 What fun to geek out with a fellow Dark Shadows fan. Looking forward to comparing notes on the EOE films. 🤗❤️ 5y

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this book; Steinbeck is a wonderful writer. I tend to think of his work as heavy and dense, but it‘s really not that way at all; quite the opposite. In some places, the Cain & Abel analogy was a bit too heavy handed, but overall, East of Eden is a great book. Thanks for doing the #eoe buddy read, @Cinfhen ! I‘ve been putting this book off for years and now I‘ve finally read it and loved it.

Cinfhen I had a very similar experience!! I was initially feeling like I would be weighed down from Steinbeck‘s writing but I ended up really enjoying my time reading this book, glad you did as well 😃 5y
KathyWheeler @Cinfhen I‘m going to read the other one I‘ve put off for years — (edited) 5y

I spent all day cleaning my closet and putting new bedding and curtains in my bedroom. Now I‘m settling down and I‘m going to try to finish this — my vacation interrupted my reading of it for the #eoe buddy read. I‘ve got about 100 pages left, if that.

Walking = 2.27 miles
Eating = good — lots of veggies and healthy protein
Other = can I count all that cleaning? It slap wore me out!😄
@wanderinglynn @Emilymdxn

wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 And of course you count cleaning—it‘s definitely a workout! 5y
KathyWheeler @wanderinglynn It really was! Now I can find things in my closet though, so I‘m happy. 😊 5y

Pre-bedtime reading. Finishing up #eoe if I can stay awake and drinking lemon-ginger tea out of my new litsy mug. Perfect way to wrap up a monday. Thanks @Litsy @TimSpalding

Chelsea.Poole Awesome! 5y
Crazeedi Where can I get a mug?? 5y
Litsy @Crazeedi So far, they're strictly prizes we've given out for photo contests and the like, but we hope to make them available on the LibraryThing (Litsy's sister site) Store soon! (edited) 5y
Cathythoughts Fab pic... loving the Litsy mug 😍 5y

Wow! I'm late for the close of the #EoE party, but I finally finished the book tonight. I would never have picked it on my own if @Cinfhen hadn't done the #buddyread & I'm glad I jumped in. I got hooked after the first 60 pages & had to see how this epic saga ended. Still working it over in my mind & headed to the last set of discussion questions now. The questions & group's perspectives helped me get so much more out of the story. Mahalo Cindy!😘

Cinfhen With pleasure, always 💕💕 5y
Cinfhen I‘ve enjoyed reading all of your comments🤓 I agree reading with the group really elevated this novel from good to great!!! Looking forward to our next one and so glad you were able to join us😘 5y
bookandbedandtea I love that map! 📍 5y

#LilithJuly I still have East of Eden on my brain because when I saw today‘s prompt #LoveFool my first thought was Adam Trask. Adam falls head over heels in love with the wickedest female ever! Because of spoilers, I won‘t share the details but trust me....Cathy Ames is seriously disturbed!!!! And Adam aka #LoveFool is completely blinded to her evil and demented ways. This was a gripping read with an incredible group of buddy readers!!! #EoE

DebinHawaii Excellent pick! I just finished the book about 15 minutes ago. Better late than never! 😉Heading to the discussion questions next. Thanks again for picking it. I was hesitant at first but it was an interesting read & a great experience! 🤗💜 5y

Mehso-so

#Unpopular opinion: I didn't like it. The writing felt flat and there was a lot of telling rather than showing. The characters seemed more like archetypes than real people. There was a lot of speechifying that I found off-putting. I think the theme was interesting, but it felt to me that the characters and story were in service to it, rather than it emerging from the story, if that makes sense. Thanks for the buddy read @Cinfhen #EoE 👇

CarolynM I'm off to look at the discussion questions now 5y
suvata Not every book is for every person. Personally, Steinbeck is one of my favorites. 5y
Cinfhen I LOVE an #unpopularopinion 🙌🏻I see what you‘re saying and your criticism is valid. I don‘t think this is the perfect novel or THE GREAT AMERICAN novel that Steinbeck thought it was, but it was definitely engaging, thought provoking and held my interest all 600 pages. So that makes it a TOTAL pick for me. Plus all the discussions really elevated my enjoyment. Thanks for joining in. 5y

CarolynM @Cinfhen I certainly don't think it's bad and I wasn't bored which is why it's a so-so not a pan. I think I just don't find Steinbeck's characters very sympathetic (I hated ALL of them in The Grapes of Wrath). 5y
Cinfhen I think I‘m ready to revisit GoW! I haven‘t read it since HS and I HATED it back then 5y
batsy I'm with @Cinfhen I love this unpopular opinion, as well 😁 A lot of your criticism rings true for me but I found it engrossing, all the same. The narrative pulled me in and I became invested in certain characters. I found the speechifying asides quite tiresome, as well. 5y
Kalalalatja I definitely agree about the characters feeling like archetypes, and the telling, not showing. I‘m glad there are some suffering opinions, it makes for livelier discussions 👍 5y
Susannah It‘s strange how a significantly flawed book can still get a high rating. I see a lot of what you‘re talking about, and I had my own issues with the Steinbeck family thread, which I felt was shoehorned in with the Trask‘s story, but I still gave it four stars. Reading is so subjective, isn‘t it? Great review! 5y
jillrhudy I can't stand Steinbeck! I feel like it's a character flaw or something! Melville either! 5y
rubyslippersreads You‘re not alone. I gave it a “pick” because it (mostly) held my interest, but it left me feeling that I need a palate cleanser like Betsy-Tacy or Anne of Green Gables. 😊 (edited) 5y
RaimeyGallant Great review. I love the word speechifying. I'm going to use it in a sentence today. 5y
MemoirsForMe Yay for your #unpopularopinion! Really appreciate your honesty. I agree it wasn‘t a perfect novel, but this Steinbeck fan was deeply engrossed in the story and the symbolism. And our provoking discussions doubled the pleasure! 5y
erzascarletbookgasm I agree about the archetype characters..some parts are like lecture notes to me, but it held my interest to the end. 5y
mrp27 Great review and I can see your points! 5y
Ruthiella *breathes a sigh of relief* I disliked this book too! I found the biblical parallels OTT and Cathy too one dimensional! I liked GoW better but mainly as a historical perspective of America‘s ugly history. 5y
CarolynM @Ruthiella I liked the bits of GofW that described the general situation but I HATED the characters and couldn't have cared less what happened to them. 5y
